Operating Requirements

The FlexSet-IP 280S has a unique MAC address that identifies the telephone to the

Aeonix database. This MAC address must be entered into the Aeonix database.

The FlexSet-IP 280S is available in ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’ hardware issues. To verify the

hardware issue check on the bottom of the IP Keyset (second character on the lower

UPC bar code), on the outside of the FlexSet-IP 280S packing box, via the keyset’s

web page, or as displayed on the SysDef menu of the keyset (Table 7 on page 49).

The phone must be connected to the LAN, connected to an external power source

(depending on system power configuration, see Supplying Power to the Phone, page 37)

and configured for the relevant IP addresses in order to begin operation, as

documented in this chapter.

The FlexSet-IP 280S is designed to operate over Ethernet LAN with a connection of

less than 100 meters to the local switch when using Category 5 UTP (unshielded

twisted pair).

If a parameter is defined as dynamic, the phone will attempt to contact a DHCP and/or DNS Server to retrieve the information for that parameter. Therefore, if you define a mandatory address as dynamic, ensure that the IP phone is on the same network as the relevant DHCP and/or DNS Server.

Table 2 displays the different possible address configurations.

If you receive error messages while attempting to connect, see Diagnostics and

Troubleshooting, page 65.

2 Configure the subnet mask of the phone. For further information, contact your

system administrator.

3 Configure the default router address. For further information, contact your

system administrator.

4 Configure the Call Agent address:

For phones connected to an Aeonix server in the local network, configure

the Call Agent address to the name or local IP address of the Aeonix server.

For phones connected to an Aeonix server positioned behind the NAT,

configure the Call Agent address to the global IP address of the Aeonix

server.

For phones that are connected to the organization from outside of the

firewall, enter the IP address of the Sentinel Pro.

When entering a static address, be sure to enter the exact address you receive from the

system administrator. Entering an incorrect address could cause major network

malfunctions.

Daisy Chaining

You may also ‘daisy chain’ additional FlexSet-IP 280S phones by connecting the LAN

connector of the additional phones to the PC connector of the original phone, see

Figure 9. Using this technique, many IP phones may be operated from the same LAN

socket.

The daisy chain layout is ideally suited to situations in which all phones are installed

on the same desk. This configuration is not recommended for phones located in

separate rooms.

The first phone may use power over the LAN or via the AC wall adaptor, all additional phones require AC power, as shown in Figure 10 (see Supplying Power to the Phone, page 37 for FlexSet-IP 280S power options).

Positioning and Mounting the Phone

The FlexSet-IP 280S can be desk or wall mounted.

To wall mount the FlexSet-IP 280S, the bracket is attached to the wall surface. The

handset hook above the cradle of the telephone set is then removed, rotated 180

degrees and replaced. The phone is then snapped onto the bracket.

The wall mount/elevation bracket can be reversed on a desktop to elevate the rear of

the FlexSet-IP 280S on a desktop at a twenty eight degree angle, lowering the viewing

angle of the keyboard and alphanumeric display.

The Desk Elevation Stand may be used to elevate the FlexSet-IP 280S on a desktop at

a sixty degree angle, in order to lower the viewing angle of the keyboard.

To mount the phone onto the wall:

1 Place the Wall Mount Bracket on the wall in the spot where you wish to mount

the phone.

2 Using the Wall Mount Bracket as a template, make a mark on the wall at the

middle of the vertical groove above the cutouts on the right and left sides (A)

and at the top of the long groove at the bottom center of the bracket (B), as

indicated in Figure 11.

3 Use a small drill bit (#7, 13/64”, 5mm or smaller) to drill three holes into the

wall for the mounting screws. The hole drilled must be wide enough to allow

the wall plugs to enter snugly, not loosely.

4 Insert the three wall plugs into the holes.

5 Insert the three screws into the wall plugs, and partially tighten them to the

wall, taking care to leave enough space to insert the Wall Mount Bracket.

6 Mount the Wall Mount Bracket on the wall (see the figure below), use the cut

The FlexSet-IP 280S requires external power at all times. There are three options to

power the phone. Types A and B provide Power over the Ethernet (PoE) according to

the IEEE 802.3AF standard. A third option powers the phone from a local AC power

outlet.

................................................................................................................

Power over Ethernet “IEEE 802.3AF” – Type A & B

There are two options for supplying power to FlexSet-IP 280S telephones over the

Ethernet (according to the IEEE 802.3AF standard). The choice depends directly on

the existing LAN infrastructure within an organization.

Verify that all twisted pairs are properly installed before considering the Power over

Ethernet option. Performing the full cable installation will automatically prepare the

desktop for delivering Power over Ethernet.

PoE - Power over Ethernet LAN: Type A

For facilities with existing 10/100MB LAN infrastructures, there are two spare twisted

pairs (4, 5, 7 & 8 pins) of unused wires in their standard Category 5 LAN cabling

(see Figure 5 on page 38). These wire pairs can be utilized to carry power to IP devices

on the network.

For facilities that include 10MB LANs, ensure that all four pairs of cabling extend to all areas of their facility. Verify that there are no split cables within the facility. Additional cabling work may be required.

PoE - Power over Ethernet LAN: Type B

For organizations that are implementing 10/100MB LAN within their infrastructure,

the only option available is to carry power via signal pairs (1, 2, 3 & 6), because all

pairs are already used to carry data in 100MB LANs. As a result, shortcomings in

cabling should not be an issue. This PoE option is depicted in Figure 6 below.

Single Unit Power Supply

The manufacturer supplies an external, single unit, AC wall power adaptor. The

provided model depends on country:

120VAC 60Hz input, 24VDC 0.5A max.output - CN72440950710 (US pin)

100-240VAC 47-63Hz input, 24VDC 0.63A max.output - CN7244-0950810

(EU pin)

The cylindrical, external conductor of the DC output connector must be negative and

the internal pin positive. If the polarities are reversed, damage will occur and the unit

will not function. If the power supply unit malfunctions, do not replace with any

power supply unit other than one included with the phone. Using a different power

supply could cause damage to the phone.

................................................................................................................

Tips - Which Type is the Best?

The FlexSet-IP 280S requires external power at all times. An AC wall power adaptor

(type C) for powering the phone is the most obvious and immediate means; it is both

the easiest from an installation standpoint and currently the most cost-effective

approach to providing power to the phone. Adding power ports (types A or B) to an

existing LAN can be significantly more costly than the simple AC wall adaptor.

Nevertheless, the added convenience of reducing the amount of cables to the desktop,

or placing a phone where power is not readily available from the building power

wiring and receptacles, creates a strong argument for using power over the data

network. Powering over the LAN (type A and B or IEEE 802.3AF standard)

infrastructure will reduce wiring costs as equipment manufacturers offer more choices

in standalone LAN power hubs and integrated power/data switches.

Powering the phone over the Ethernet offers the following advantages:

If the LAN has power backup, voice services can stay online along with data

in the event of a power failure.

Less electrical cabling is required for new buildings, office relocations,

re-configurations, and personnel moves.

Only one cable needs to be routed to the phone desktop, with power to the

phone being an integral part of the centrally managed IP infrastructure.

Only a single network connection is required to place both the phone and the

desktop PC on the LAN - no ports or power receptacles are necessary.

Connecting the AC Wall Power adaptor (TPS – Type C)

The manufacturer supplies an external, single unit AC power supply adaptor, the TPS.

See Specifications, page 71.

The power pin’s cylindrical, external conductor must be positive and the internal pin

negative. No damage will occur if the polarities are reversed, however the unit will

not function.

To power the phone using a TPS:

1 Plug the TPS power adaptor into a 115/230 VAC receptacle.

2 Insert the TPS plug into the jack marked “DC” on the rear of the

FlexSet-IP 280S base (see Figure 5 on page 20).

If the power supply unit malfunctions, do not replace with any power supply unit other

than one supplied by the manufacturer for this phone. Using a different power supply

could cause damage to the phone.

Checking the Phone Connectivity

At this point, the phone can be tested for connectivity with a ping test. It is not

necessary to configure the Aeonix or the phone before testing connectivity.

The factory-defined static IP address of the phone is 192.168.1.10.

1 If your workstation is configured to an assigned static IP address, record the IP

address on a piece of paper.

2 Temporarily assign a static IP address to your workstation that is on the same

IP subnet as the factory-defined IP address of the terminal.

3 On your workstation, open a cmd prompt screen, and type:

C:\>ping 192.168.1.10

4 If the following output appears, the terminal connectivity test was successful:

C:\>ping 192.168.1.10

Setting IP Parameters for the FlexSet-IP 280S

Before you set the IP parameters for the phone, enter the relevant values (under the

Value column) in Table 8 on page 50.

Static or Dynamic IP Address

Contact the system administrator to determine whether you will be using a static or

dynamic IP address. It is recommended that FlexSet-IP 280S telecommuters use

dynamic addresses.

If a parameter is defined as dynamic, the FlexSet-IP 280S will attempt to contact a

DHCP and/or DNS Server to retrieve the information for that parameter. Therefore, if

you define a mandatory address as dynamic, ensure that the phone is on the same

network as the relevant DHCP and/or DNS Server.

Call Agent

For the FlexSet-IP 280S to operate, at least one call agent must be defined for the

phone. This call agent can be defined as follows:

Call Agent 1: Enter the IP address of the Aeonix server to which the phone

connects by default.

CA Name: Enter the host name of the Aeonix server to which the phone

connects by default.

If you enter conflicting values in Call Agent 1 and CA Name, the system will use the

Call Agent 1 address.

Additional nine call agents can be specified for backup purposes.

Printing DESI Labels

The FlexSet-IP 280S includes a removable faceplate for the programmable buttons on

the phone, enabling the user to label the buttons. The DESITM Plus Labeling System

is used to label the buttons on the phone. DESI Plus is a user-friendly and powerful

telephone designation strip program, which allows an office printer to quickly create

labels custom-designed for various phones. The phone comes with a preprinted DESI

label inserted beneath the faceplate. Additional blank DESI labels may be purchased

from your dealer in letter or A4 sized paper. The sheets of peel-off stickers are

provided to label the phone buttons with names and phone numbers. To choose the

appropriate label sheet layout, use the following label sheets:

Letter size (8 1/2 x 11"): Catalog No. 7244-7400430

A4 size: Catalog No. 7244-7400420

Use DESI software downloaded from the manufacturer’s site or from the DESI site

(http://www.desi.com) to print the labels from your computer.

To download DESI software from the manufacturer’s site:

1 Access the manufacturer’s website at http://www.tadirantele.com.

2 Go to Partners login, type your username and password.

3 Click Enter. The Main Partners page is displayed.

The phone firmware is regularly enhanced to provide new features. You can upgrade

the phone by downloading its latest version from the manufacturer’s website.

This chapter describes the following procedures:

Upgrading the Software Version below

Viewing the Current FlexSet-IP 280S Software Version, page 70

................................................................................................................

Upgrading the Software Version

You can download updated FlexSet-IP 280S software versions from a local TFTP

Server. Before you start the upgrade, make sure that:

The local TFTP Server is available and running on the same LAN as the

FlexSet-IP 280S

The FlexSet-IP 280S is active. The phone does not need to be registered in

theAeonix.

Before downloading the file containing the new software version, the FlexSet-IP 280S

erases part of its flash memory. Then it downloads the file from the TFTP server and

stores it in the flash memory.

Upon successful completion of the file transfer, the FlexSet-IP 280S performs a CRC

(Cyclic Redundancy Check), to determine the validity of the file. In case of a failure,

the FlexSet-IP 280S reboots with the previous software version. If the upgrade is

successful, the FlexSet-IP 280S re-initializes with the updated version.

The entire process takes approximately one minute when performed over a local LAN.

It may take longer when performed via the Internet.

You can upgrade a FlexSet-IP 280S:
