NC systems are a familiar part of surface
printing and simple lamination applications
on OPP and PE films plus surface printing
on paper. Yet modern gravure and premium
flexo printing methods enable NC inks to be
printed on PET films for various applications.
Mastering challenges through dialog
and experience
Be it lid films for cheese and meat packag-
ing, coffee packaging or stand-up pouches,
NC-based inks can be applied on many dif-
ferent PET laminates (see box below). This
versatility makes nitrocellulose-based inks
a genuinely all-purpose solution for use on
food-compatible PET films. But the require-
ments are correspondingly complex – ink
systems require good adhesion, bonding
values and seal strength plus a high degree
of flexibility. Siegwerk’s experienced experts
therefore advise on the printing process-
es that best meet your needs and keep in
close contact to provide continuous advice.
“If you add NC inks to different white inks,
for example, you enhance the properties
of your application”, Andreas Schellen-
bach, Regional Director of Flexible Pack-
aging EMEA Applications Technology
at Siegwerk, explains. “We recommend
Given their versatility and reliability, the NC systems used in gravure and flexo printing have an excellent reputation, enabling them to be
employed in various composite-material solutions involving PET films. Siegwerk’s longstanding expertise perfectly complements this benefit.
SIMPLY VERSATILE – NC SYSTEMS FOR PET LAMINATES
polyurethane-based (PU) or 2K white inks.
Their composition can always be perfectly
matched to your printing process.”
Multiple options, one system
In contrast to PU, PVC and PVB inks, NC
systems are more blocking-resistant when
used on PET laminates. Another positive
side effect is that they only emit a mild
odor. That basically makes handling waste
inks (there are several options available) a
positive experience.
NC systems also perform well in combi-
nation with other components. Andreas
Schellenbach explains: “It’s easy to extend
your NC master-batch system by adding an-
other component to handle PET film appli-
cations. NC inks are compatible with such
concentrate systems. To upgrade NC inks
to meet these performance requirements,
Siegwerk combines mainly self-manufac-
tured NC concentrates with PU. This deliv-
ers precision!”

Reasons for a dedicated
digital business unit
Getting one’s own company fit for the dig-
ital future and at the same time supporting
customers by providing modern solutions
and services to achieve optimum results is
what the Digital Unit, which was established
at the start of 2017, aspires to do. It con-
cerns itself with those interfaces between
our company, our customers and brand
owners affected by digitalization. That rang-
es from customer interfaces via IT infrastruc-
tures to capturing and sharing knowledge.
Berlin-based digital consultancy, etventure,
helped to set up the Digital Unit. Siegwerk
deliberately chose to locate its new busi-
ness unit in Germany’s capital. The environ-
ment that encompasses digital companies
and start-ups is ideal. The newly established
unit consists of Christoph Barniske, Head of
Digital Business, and three other Siegwerk
colleagues.
Herbert Forker, CEO Siegwerk, explains:
“We have established a new digital busi-
ness unit to understand how customer
proximity and ‘big data’ can help us im-
prove the services we provide to our cus-
tomers. This simultaneously helps the work
of our sales teams and paves the way for
new infrastructure projects that generate
global synergies.”
Benefits for Siegwerk customers
What does digitalization mean in reality
for a highly specialized manufacturer of
packaging print inks? What benefits does
ongoing digitalization offer this global
company’s customers? >>
Digital processes can help not only to improve but also
to simplify customers’ day-to-day operations. The newly
established Siegwerk Digital Unit in Berlin has been
focusing on the “how” for many years. Siegwerk
is therefore prioritizing a widely discussed topic
and is facing up to the imminent changes that
digital transformation is bringing.

André Berk, a long-serving Siegwerker,
took up the newly created position of
Head of Sales Flexible Packaging EMEA
on July 1. He is now returning to corpo-
rate headquarters in Siegburg following
his last posting as Head of Flexible Pack-
aging Asia in Singapore. “While packag-
ing ink markets in Asia continue to grow
rapidly, the challenge in slower-growth
markets like Europe is to defend market
shares and margins. I am really looking
forward to it”, is how Berk summarizes
his new job.
This move means a return to his old
workplace – during the last 20 years
of employment at Siegwerk, the new
Head of Sales Flexible Packaging has
already headed up the Print Media
business unit and acted as Siegburg
site coordinator. Do you have a proj-
ect that you would like to discuss with
André Berk? As the company’s pri-
mary “Flexible Packaging Sales” con-
tact, you can reach him via his e-mail
address: [email protected].
NEW HEAD OF SALES – WELCOME BACK, ANDRÉ BERK
André Berk, Head of Sales Flexible Packaging EMEA
The Digital Unit interviewed about 70
Siegwerk customers about their needs and
day-to-day challenges. Christoph Barniske
explains a typical situation that emerged
from this project: “A short-term production
plan with many small jobs and very differ-
ent inks represents critical mass for print
companies. Things get tough when individ-
ual components are delayed in the case of
just-in-time deliveries.”
An application called “Delay Notification”,
which provides delivery status information
for ordered products at any time, and also
models the entire business process from or-
dering to billing, is to be launched shortly.
This newly developed software tool is just
one of many measures that Siegwerk is tak-
ing to get closer in virtual terms to custom-
ers. Herbert Forker is certain of one thing:
“Local relationships are key, especially in
business dealings with customers. The dig-
italization of our business is enabling us to
drive our differentiation strategy forward
and further strengthen our market posi-
tioning.”
