We thought it was appropriate now we have finished the year we look back on what we have done in 2013. Firstly we would like to give you a definition of what our FITLIFE brand stands for. We are a group of people that come together to support, educate and improve the quality of life by living it fit #liveafitlife. The FITLIFE brand was founded by, Daina Kahu and Daniel Cook with a vision to support the growth and education for everyone who comes under the FITLIFE umbrella. We are an unpretentious group of awesome people that understand that movement is medicine for longevity of health. Our FITLIFE Crew has been supported online by Daina through her FB group called ‘Our Fit Life Journey .... Connect - Share – Inspire’. This group is designed for people who have the desire to create for themselves a 'Fit Life' and wish to inspire others to do the same by connecting in the group and sharing their story and supporting others as they go through their own Health & Fitness Journey. 2013 FITLIFE Crew was created on November 11th, 2012 at 21.04 hrs. Daniel had a plan to organise health and fitness events each month for the crew. These events were either already established by other organisations or were created and conducted by FITLIFE. Once the group had been created Louisa (one of our first online FITLIFE members) came up with a great idea to look at participating at the South Bank parkrun, Saturday morning's 7am. This created a great way for everyone to meet, support, run with, or chase, and to catch up over coffee. We are still doing South Bank parkrun to this day.

FITLIFE 2013

A LOOK BACK ON OUR FITLIFE 2013 CREW PAGE Well what a great, exciting and interesting year for our FITLIFE Crew. We thought it was appropriate now we have finished the year we look back on what we have done in 2013. Firstly we would like to give you a definition of what our FITLIFE brand stands for. We are a group of people that come together to support, educate and improve the quality of life by living it fit #liveafitlife.

The FITLIFE brand was founded by, Daina Kahu and Daniel Cook with a vision to support the growth and education for everyone who

comes under the FITLIFE umbrella. We are an unpretentious group of awesome people that understand that movement is medicine for

longevity of health.

January: Resolution Run FITLIFE Crew start the year with the January Event, Resolution Run on Sunday January 13th. This proved a great way to start the year off. 5 km walk or Run and an 11km run. The weather didn’t fail to test us with a humid day, but that didn’t stop us, we all wanted to hit the year running ... Literally :) Everyone in the group were pretty happy with their first event for 2013.

Special mention for this event went out to Mike Ngarimu as this was his first running event in 10 years! The old fella did well and was really happy with his time.

Two silly buggers did the Spartan 300 Burpee Challenge in Jan. The Burpee's had to be done to a cadence, if you fell behind the cadence, you were stopped by officials which meant you were finished. 127 people registered with only 24 people completing the challenge. Ian and Daniel were included in the 24 strong that completed the 300 Burpee Challenge successfully. They can both assure you that this was a very tough challenge and that doing 300 Burpee's in 20 minutes 5 seconds is no easy feat!

. For some strange reason we had looked at registering for the Raby Bay Triathlon! Half of us hadn't done a swim forever and half of us didn't even own bikes! This event was going to be interesting. However before that date was Australian Day that saw the crew head down to South Bank parkrun to celebrate this great country we all call home. This is such a great photo of the girls.

February: Raby Bay Triathlon

FITLIFE February Event was the Raby Bay Triathlon on the 24th Feb. Our crew competed in the Enticer and the longer distance of 400m swim/15 km Bike and 4 km run. The prep for this event ended up with the same two guys that did the 300 Burpee challenge nearly drowning in the pool. There was more laughing than swimming during their training sessions. The morning of the event drenched us with pouring rain only for it to clear before the first wave left. We were all in different age groups, which meant we could all support each other. The event was organized well and was a great event for those of us that wanted to tick off our first Tri. Our Tri crew: Louisa, Ioanna, Katanya, Lisa, Tara, Daniel and welcome to the crew Briony and Jo, and also thank you to the supporting crew of Daina, Sheryl and Reg, and Andy for letting us shelter under his ‘Pursue Training’ tent and supporting us during the event. This event set the precedence for the rest of the year.

April: Fitlife 100 Club Circuit

April saw the first Fitlife organised event on the 21st with the 100's Club Circuit, It had been a long time since Daniel and Daina ran outdoor circuits so for both our coaches and our crew this was quite exciting. The circuit involved various pieces of equipment: Vipr, Medicine Balls, KettleBells, Barbells, along with a number of Bodyweight exercises complete with a shuttle run as your timer. The aim of the 100’s club circuit is to work worth with your partner to complete 100 reps of each exercise. It was a great way for the crew to appreciate each other’s fitness and abilities. It proved to be one of the favourite style of circuit with the love for competition coming out in some of the crew.

Our crew on the day: Mike, Josefine, Tara, Ioanna, Daina, Christina, Katanya and Daniel

welcome to the group Nova, Luke, Hira, Leslie, Maree, Kirsty,

Helene, Andy, Lisa, Clay, Uncle Billy, Uncle Billy's daughter,

Danny, Lisa and Teri. It is great to see the group grow. When 2 or more people share the love of fitness and health it is called a movement. The FITLIFE movement has begun

May: Orieteering with Tara

Also in May, Daina and Daniel did the Naked Runners Seminar (not actually running naked! Lol) which looked at the SOFT PRINCIPLES of running. Since this was the second workshop on injury prevention for Running, it became pretty clear that everyone needs a little bit of tuition when it comes to getting back in to what should be the most natural movement for us. Running!

Unfortunately Daina and I couldn't be there due to a business seminar we had to attend so we left it up to the

girls to get the job done.

Glenn Conley, one of Daniels clients did a Sydney Half Marathon on May 19th, in his prep for the GC Full Marathon. These courses armed our coaches with the right tools needed to get Glenn ready for his race. This proved handy with Glenns’ previous foot injury! So OPERATION MARATHON was underway.

Lisa, Tara, Briony and Katanya. Tara did a great job for the May event, with the girls loving the change of event

and getting out and about in the forest.

Ian missed out on the Raby Tri event as the Event Registration filled up really quickly, so instead did his first 100km ride from Landsborough to Chermside on a borrowed bike but I can assure everyone that the speed would have been faster then fast. Preparation then turned to our March Event that evolved more running for the Twilight Run. Tara had her first training war wound training for the Twilight run with a bleeding toenail ... This will all come clear later on with our war wound Tara :)

March Event: The Twilight Run that everyone will remember for a very long time. What started out to be a picture perfect day ended in an event organisers nightmare! The unpredictability of Queensland’s extreme weather forced the event to be cancelled mid race. With a huge storm ripping through UQ, adults and children were blown side to side as they ran the bridge, tree branches were breaking and falling to the ground, tents and

debris were sent flying while the runners scampered through to the finish line. The consensus from the crew was that while it was scary and sad (Due to a fellow participant dying days after being struck down by one of the many falling branches) running in the storm was great fun and added a bit of adventure to a run. Southbank parkrun had biggest team event at the Twilight Run with well over 100 participants in their team.

March: Twilight Run 5 or 10 km run

Also on March 16 Briony Both did Park Run under 25 minutes, great time Briony.

Staring in

South Bank parkrun continued to have a growing group of Fitlifer’s. With the nature of how parkrun is run and with the support from everyone, Fitlifer’s included, many of the crew were starting to get the bug for running and also preempting the GC Half/Full Marathon coming up in July. There is something about running in a group that makes a half or full Marathon seem doable.

April came around and a group of Fitlifer’s got together to create a FITLIFE Touch team to play in the West End comp for 12 weeks. So with a few ‘has-been’s’, ‘wannabes’ and a couple of us ‘still trying to be’, the Fitlife Touch Team were definitely all about playing for fun and if they won it would be a bonus haha. Check out further in this issue to see how they went.

Color Run Gold Coast

The Color Run would have to be one of the most enjoyable running events the crew has participated in. The event organisers hyped the event well that everyone did their part to create a great atmosphere for the crowd. There was not much running on the day but there was plenty of cartwheels and a whole lot of STOP - DROPPED AND ROLLING (SDR) through the colored dye. As you can see in the photo’s the SDR help create some funky outfits by the end of the day.

With the original date being postponed due to heavy rain and storms. This event ended up being held on a cracker of a day chilled day for those that participated. Briony, Katanya and Felix, Kerry and DJ, Louisa, Lou, Daina and Daniel

Fitlife coaches surprised the crew by buying them all Paint ball Entry Tickets. So the 25th of May would become the day we all became Rambo! What a great day. There were plenty of commando rolls, sniper shots, ambushing, kamikazes, ducking and getting hit! And boy do those bullets hurt! Check out the war wounds in the pictures. Paintball crew: Mike, Katanya, Nova, Luke, Jodie, Christina, Tara, Louisa, Daniel, and Daina. Welcome to the group Krystoff, Louise and Lara

April came around and we got a group of people together to create a FITLIFE Touch team. For 12 weeks the ‘has been’s’, ‘wanna be’s’ and the ‘still tying to be’s’ kept no real expectations on how they would go...With their limited experience, only time would tell, on how they would go.

Our parkrun crew continued to grow. 7am Park Run became routine and it has proven that coffee tastes so much better after a run and in the company of good people. Not only was the company good but the support was incredible especially for those that have only just started running. The crew will participate in the GC Half/Full Marathon coming up in July so using the 5km distance as a paced run was the best way to utilize the parkrun events.

June Event: City to South &

June event bought the City to South, 14 km run from Botanical Gardens through to Southbank and around the UQ loop. The crew seemed to really enjoy this run. Once the race opened up from the start, the pace was quite steady and having the course more of an undulating run route than the other courses earlier in the year, it made for an interesting run. For some of our Fitlifers who don’t particularly enjoy running per say, it was a run they wouldn’t mind doing again. The Crew: Ioanna, Tara, Briony, Mike, Lisa, Katanya, Daina, Lara, Maree,

Daniel.

This is where Marilyn and Lance were introduced to the Fitlife Crew. They took this photo of our crew and Daina got them connected on to our Facebook Group. Then the next thing you know, Marilyn works with Katanya! Small world, Bigger Fitlife now

NZ North Island Tour

June 18th: Fitlife NZ TOUR

Auckland - Hamilton - Taupo - Waiouru - Palmerston North - Wellington.

Auckland: Daniel organized the crew to visit Specforce, a gym like no other. Scotty Cottier (the founder of Specforce) and Daniel spent many years in the NZ Army together and both worked as Physical Training Instructors at the Linton Army Base, Palmerston North. Scotty has created a gym built for functional and sports specific training. It has space large enough to conduct a beep test for sports teams/large groups and enough weights stations to set up 5 workout stations with their own shuttle run area behind it. This is perfect for elite teams like the All Blacks to train in.

Scotty filled us in on what his passion and drive were with regards to Specforce. His vision is much like that of Fitlife. It is no wonder the crew settled in easily. Our crew were staying in the gym overnight so once all the formalities were taken care of the crew got ready for their first event.

We started the tour off with Minor Games: a collaboration of games, which help even out the skill sets for everyone, but on the flip side is very cardio demanding as they are very quick games. Each game is a variance of a few major sports. For example: The game the crew is playing in these pictures is called, One Touch. A mix of netball, touch rugby and league. Once you got the rules of the game it then comes down to teamwork, strategy, skill, patience, and communication. This proved to be a great way to start the tour.

The Fitlife crew united through play

2 hours later Scotty hosted a Specforce Circuit for his members and invited the crew to participate. The circuit was a fixed Dose circuit. You worked in pairs and had 4 different stations, each station had a group of exercises and each exercise had set reps. After each exercise you complete as a pair you had a loop to run. The crew split themselves up to meet someone new and gave it their all. This was a great circuit, great atmosphere, music pumping, funky exercises (Daniel is sure Scotty spiced up the exercises and spiked up the reps because the crew were there! Lol). The crew thoroughly enjoyed it but a lot of the team were sore after. So we took the night off to replenish at the Sky tower for dinner.

One circuit wasn’t enough

for the crew so the next Morning we had another

tough circuit at Specforce. This type of training is new to the crew and even those that use to do this as a

job in the military the

bodies were not as conditioned to this as they usually would so some of the team

were huuuurrrrrrttttt

ting :) but still completed it even with a smile for the

camera afterwards.

Thanks to Scotty

and his Specforce team for a great

visit, the crew absolutely loved

it.

On the road from Auckland the crew head through Hamilton for a

quick stop in to Daniels Dads place

before heading on to Taupo.

During the trip to Taupo, Daniel and

Daina introduced the team to Choc Bars and Jelly Tip Ice Creams! Tezza fell in love

with those ice creams! Lol Along

with NZ’s own Burger Fuel.

The crew stopped off at the Huka falls. One of the many

beautiful places in NZ.

Heading on to Waiouru, where the crew was hoping to get some high ropes action going at the Waiouru Military Camp Indoor Confidence Course, there was snow on the road, which slowed the trip down. Briony had never been in the snow before so they parked the van up and indulged like kids throwing snowballs at eachother and making snow angels!

Not able to do the ropes course in time the crew stopped at the local BP station and grabbed a coffee to warm up, as it

was snowing, and off course another round

of Jelly Tip and Choc Bar Ice Creams!

.

Palmerston North: The crew finally arrived in Palmy. Jamaal had organised a nice hotel in town so they managed to get a good nights sleep after their long trip through the snow. They were very lucky as the Desert Rd they travelled along was closed not long after they came through. The following day they met up with Mike. Then headed to Daniel, Nova and Mike’s old stomping ground, Linton Military Camp and did a yoga session at the gym. Daina’s mum joined them in the yoga session too. After yoga the crew took a tour of the 1RNZIR (1st Royal NZ Infantry Regiment) head quarters were Daniel spent his first 8 years as a soldier. Close friend, Staff Sargent Brent Pene, took the crew around the head quarters and explained the Maori Carvings, the history, the colors in the flags and took us through the head quarters to the history room to look at the NZ soldiers that had gone before us.

The bond between soldiers is hard to break.

Next day was the highlight and the main reason for the trip. New Zealand’s own NZ Tough Guy Tough Gal. Similar to the obstacle courses run here in Australia. The event was 12 km, which was set up in 2 x 6 km loops around the military camp, negotiating obstacles, freezing rivers, hills, mud and rain. 250 people entered the 12 km event, by lap 2 the numbers had come down to 50 Like WTF!!! ... And the crew from sunny Brisbane were part of that 50.. YOU KNOW!! The temperature got down to 3 degrees and some of the crew were so cold, their hands curled up and were painful to touch. The crew stayed together and kept each other going. They even picked up a lone ranger on the course, Jo, while everyone else gave up our crew along with Jo kept hard at it and completed the full 12km. The course organisers could not believe our crew was still out there since everyone else pulled the pin.

Sometimes even though you come through the finish

line last you actually come is first.

Great prep with the first 3 events set up a great event

by the crew.

Fitlife’s Tough Gals and

The crew had their own support crew armed with scrogan (nuts/seeds/dried fruit/licorice/chocolate), jelly beans and more chocolate. This came in handy when they hit the half way mark. They were cold; actually some of them (Daina and Teri) were beyond cold! The snacks gave them a bit more energy and heat needed to complete the full course. To top off their experience there was no hot water left in the tanks as those that quit the course used it all. There were a number of cases for hypothermia but with the preparation and support our crew came away unscathed.

The NZ Tour was exceptional. To do what we did in that short period of time is something FITLIFE could not have done without the alliance’s with Specforce, NZ Army and family and friends. This really is more than just a trip. It is an experience that will be remembered for a lifetime.

Special mention goes to Jamaal for organising our flights, accommodation and

travel down the country..... Thanks Jamaal.

The crew would like to thank their support crew: Dellina, Tanya, Bri, and our cameraman Donell for handling being out in the cold and wet handing out snacks and giving them a cheer on as they ran past.

Daniel and Daina had family come to see them at each town they stayed at.

The crew got back for NZ and July came around quick for our next event. Through the freezing battles in NZ, Tara unfortunately injured her knee, which made the prep for GC half Marathon not fun at all for her. July event: GC Half Marathon/Full Marathon. This isn’t an event where you decide the day before to do. Your body gets put through its paces young or old. You have to respect the body with some form of training lead up. Having a crew that continues to grow there is so much opportunity

July Event: GC Half & Full Marathon

Crew: Katanya, Maree Tara, Lara, Daina, Ioanna and Daniel Full Marathon Glenn

Special mention goes to Glenn completing his first Full Marathon. A lifetime

goal achieved!

To Lara for running her first half with little

preparation if any at all! Those legs of Lara's would feel the run for the next 2-3 days after this event.

To Katanya for running her

first half Marathon distance. Katanya went

from running less than 5km without stopping to

running the half without stopping all within 12

months!

There are some great success stories when it comes to running.

Lisa Wright did the Jetty to Jetty, 21st of July.

The Fitlife crew need to ready themselves for TM Sunshine Coast and started their 4 weeks training phase. Everyone had their own training they needed to concentrate on before and during this phase. If they needed to improve their cardio they would do more cardio. Needed more strength they trained more in strength. It was the job of our coaches to get them up skilled and familiar with the obstacles and tasks. The crew then completed 4 weeks of TM specific training in various venues. This gave everyone a chance to meet his or her teammates. The crew was split in to 3 teams. Alpha team, Bravo team and Charlie team. Each team member had their own job to do within their group so training was important to cement good team dynamics and to build trust in those they did not know. Our coaches, Daniel and Daina have participated in Australia’s first TM in Melbourne and also both days in Sydney TM so they had a great deal of experience. Their time as Physical Training Instructors in the NZ forces gives them the edge when it comes to organizing training and teaching the necessary skills required to get over the obstacles.

Fitlife Toughmudder group is now ready!

Welcome to the group, Nat, Tammy, Felix, Kirsty, Dan, Leigh, Scotty, Shelia, Petrina, Dicko, Paula, Mike, Laura, Sonya, Chris, Kirsty, Zane, Kirsty, Special Mention goes to our support crew, Jo, Lou, Sheryl, Reg, B’s mum, who all had snacks (jellybeans and scrogan) and first aid (Which was needed on the day) and to Donell for taking great photo’s for the crew.

August Event: TM Sunshine Coast This event went better than expected. The layout of the event made for easy transition through to the start line. The crew

was split in to the 3 sub unit teams, Alpha, Bravo and Charlie team. The teams all worked together and each group had at least

one person who had to get through personal hurdles.

Alpha Team: Luke, Chris, Sonya, Mike, Daina, Bella, Nova

Bravo Team: Uncle Billy, Petrina, Dicko, Leigh, Tammy, Kirsty, Katanya, Scotty, Jamie, Dan, Teri, Natalea, Paula + 2 others

Charlie Team: Ioanna, Mike, Hira, Leslie, Jodie, Daniel, Laura, Ian

Special Mention also goes to Emily Wilson. Em was part of the Bravo team but didn't make the

start time due to the traffic. After being disappointed in herself for not making it she dusted herself off and did it by herself. This was a huge effort and achievement for her on many levels. This would be one of Emily’s

defining moments that’s for sure.

Fitlife visors were being trialed and if proved successful would be available for Fitlifer’s to purchase. Whilst the visors where popular there was no way to put the Fitlife logo on them so it is back to the drawing board.

Remember reading about our Fitlife Touch Team earlier? Tuesday 20th August FITLIFE Touch Team wins the West End Mixed Touch Comp. Woop woop!! There is something to be said about teamwork and communication when it comes to team sports. The Fitlife team has signed on for another season. Can they back it up? ... Watch this space!

Fitlife Touch Team: Bryce, Lisa, Doug, Wayne, Terry, Jake, Dale, David, Daniel, Selena, Kelsey, Daina

Starting in September, Daniel ran a Lunchtime FITLIFE Running Club and FITLIFE Fitmoves Circuit, for KGS members. The Running club was aimed at educating members on different methods of running and Fitmoves Circuit was aimed at showing members and how cardio conditioning and functional strength can be improved through a circuit. Fitmoves is a training protocol our coaches have adopted from their mentors. It is designed to benefit any fitness level. It can also be designed as a sports specific training method.

Page 29: Fitlife Crew of 2013

September Event: Beep Test Circuit

September 17th Event was a FITLIFE Beep Test Circuit: This circuit was a pairs circuit. One person exercised while the other ran a level of the Beep Test. Each level lasts, on average, 1min 4sec. Each level the shuttle runs get faster and faster which means they run extra shuttles as they progress through each level. This starts to get hard higher up in the level count.

Also it was Lisa Wrights Birthday,

What a great way to spend

your birthday morning

With the year almost over our Fitlife crew were starting to feel their bodies were being pushed to their limits. Our coaches have worked with a few therapists and have found Optima Sports in Kelvin Grove and Luka Boltic in the CBD to be extremely beneficial to keeping the body singing and not always stinging!

Friendships were forged over the Gateway Bridge during the bridge to Brisbane event.

Paula and Dellina spend time getting to know each other more as they walked/jogged over the bridge. Dellina lives in NZ and is committed to coming over every year for the B2B.

We ended up playing another season of Touch Footy at West End, a lot of new teams in the comp that were at a really good standard and had been playing touch for a number of years. We made the finals against a team that had been playing together for 8 years. They had a lot of support for the day, as they had kicked our butts the first time we played them by 2 tries ...... But we do have a lot of competitive members in our touch team if you didn't know that all ready... Lol .... And on November 26th we won the Mixed B Grade Touch a Team again!

October Event: Members Challenge

2

For the month of October Fitlife had to cancel the planned event however as it turned out KGS FF had a members challenge around the same time and most of our crew were able to participate. The top times were achieved by our very own, Daina with a time of just over 15min and Ian just over 14min. Many of the crew are going to use this challenge as a way of measuring their level of fitness

This event was a chance for our coaches to get together with the crew and discuss plans for 2014. When setting up the yearly calendar of events, Daniel ensures that he has a wide spread of events that cater for the majority of the crew. Whilst the calendar is organized and finalized by Daniel he is open to suggestions and to others sharing their personal events to the crew even if they are not on the main calendar. Daniel listened at this event to what you want for 2014. The 2014 calendar is out NOW so make sure you check it out. So time to book in for each event and then collect the bibs as tokens so you know what you have been up to for the year. This crew is alive when it continuously has movement. The more people who connect to this crew the more life the crew has to give. During this event we got to ‘play’ a bit more with card games, petanque, volleyball, Frisbee and soccer. The competitive nature was out in full force. As long as the competitive energy is boxed and contained it is healthy and encouraged. Play is also encouraged

2013 has been an incredible year for our Fitlife crew. They have

experienced the highs and lows of fitness and

health with PB’s, new events, friendships

forged, support, friendly rivalry, farewells,

volunteering, injuries, stress, competition,

healthy Fitlife babies being born, birthday

celebrations for members and events, personal demons beaten, wagers lost, family events, working bees, and new goals set every year.

Fitlife would like to thank you all for a

wonderful year and look forward to seeing all

that is achieved in 2014!
