Chris Ryu - Messenger Editor

It's coming up to that time of year again... If you run a club/group/organisation, please send us your 2018 dates, so we can get them into the village diary. You can also add them directly into the diary on the Messenger website.

Advertising Manager Rosie will soon be contacting current advertisers to book space for next year. It's likely that we'll run out of space, as we had a waiting list this year, so please do get your adverts booked nice and early to avoid disappointment.

The new Marnhull Village Facebook Group is growing fast and is a great way of sharing what's happening in the village while waiting for the next issue of the Messenger - why not check it out!

We were a little tight on space this issue, so there's a bit less from neighbouring villages, but hopefully you'll agree that there's still a good selection. December is normally a bit quiter, so back to normal next issue perhaps...

Establishing The Conservation AreasParish Response To DCC Proposal

Following Dorset County Council’s approval of the suggested Conservation Areas in December 1969, the County Planning Officer, Mr Abbott then formally consulted the Rural District (Sturminster Newton) and Parish (Marnhull) Councils in April 1970. Marnhull’s response was signed by the Clerk to the Council, Mrs L Silverton in June.

She initially stated that the Parish Council agree that the areas to be conserved should be as definite and few as practicable. She then commented on 7 additional areas that the Parish Council felt should be considered for conservation.

“Ham Lane. Part of the field OS 95 (which is the large field to the South of Ham Lane and to the West of what is now Lovells Mead) between and excluding Hazlitts and up to and excluding Woodlands Farm to a depth of 200 feet. Ham Lane is on level ground and is a very popular walk with extensive views to the South and West over the Blackmore Vale.

The West Side of Sackmore Lane. From the junction with Burton Street to and including Orchard Villa. These houses are all of stone in the MARNHULL tradition and of the same quality as many of those in Burton St.

The South Side of Burton St in OS 142 to a depth of 50 ft to include the two chestnut (sic) trees near the roadside. (They probably meant the two horse chestnut trees on the side of Burton St, opposite the Old Meeting House)

Tapshays (OS 220) for similar reasons to Sackmore Lane.

The West Side of Church Lane between the Graveyard and the Pumping Station to a depth of 200 ft. In order to preserve the green “lung” of Marnhull.

In addition, we consider two areas are also worth (sic) of conservation;

Carraway Lane This lane carries a footpath to join with several others and has a very fine and extensive view South Eastward towards the hills. The area should include at least the gardens of the houses and South of the lane to a depth of 200 feet.

Nash Court Nash Court Farm and Cottages. To the junction with Hains Lane.

We feel that these suggestions are the minimum necessary to preserve the character and amenities of the village. We would much appreciate a visit from Mr Pakenham to discuss these proposals at these sites”

Mr Pakenham visited soon after, as his memo to Mr Abbott in July 1970 records; “ Marnhull have put forward a lot of amendments and I had a meeting with their representative and he is going to let me know what they think in light of my observations.”

His reply in September 1970 to Marnhull PC and the County Planning Officer was as follows; “Marnhull has made a special request for the inclusion of a 200ft deep strip of land along the west of Church Hill to preserve the view of the “green lung” between New St and Burton St. The same thing is proposed for the West side of Sackmore Lane and the south side of Burton St. Carraway Lane is right off the map and so is Nash Court. Obviously they are thinking on the lines I did in the first place. Perhaps you would give consideration to the points raised in the attached letter?”

Next time, we shall consider what the County Planning officer decided upon.

Dr Francis Burrows had his audience rolling in the aisles with his hilarious anecdotes about a lifetime in amateur operatics.

Years ago the Yeovil Operatic Society used to put on a production in early Spring. The venue was the Assembly Hall where the dressing rooms were beneath the stage. One of the first jobs for the Director was to hire a couple of large tarpaulins The first was stretched across the subterranean area to provide segregated dressings rooms, and the other was needed to cover the earth floor which, after even moderate Spring rain, became a quagmire. If there had been a downpour the cast walked upon a sort of dank waterbed.

At that time, Francis explained, there were few firms locally which hired out scenery and props, so that if one were to go to see any amateur performance in the area one was sure to find The Merry Widow, Iolanthe or The Student Prince moving through strangely familiar streets, houses, castles or woodland glens.

There were incidents aplenty to keep the cast on its toes but sometimes the audience provided the drama. At one performance to which Civic dignitaries from all the nearby towns had been invited, a Mayoress in full regalia, returning hurriedly from the lavish interval hospitality, missed her footing, slid at speed down the central aisle on her back, crashed through the orchestra curtain and demolished a cello.

Over the years the cast and director had to cope with any number of bizarre incidents involving fire alarms, donkeys, wigs and more. Francis told the story of a dance sequence that the director thought would be more spectacular and dream-like if it were to be accompanied by a gentle mist. Dry ice was obtained and a stage helper instructed to pour small amounts of water onto it from time to time and waft the resulting mist onto the stage. One night that stage helper was not available and his replacement was not fully conversant with the system. Possibly feeling that more mist might be even more effective, he emptied the whole bucket of water onto the dry ice. The fog erupted like a geyser and billowed onto the stage, engulfing the dancers to the waist. It poured into the orchestra pit and swamped the players and then rolled on to smother the first three rows of the audience whose arms could be seen flailing helplessly from the cloud bank.

In November we have a Kurling evening, and if you have not experienced this game I urge you to come and have a go. You are certain to have an uproarious time.

YV

Women's Institute

Royal British LegionThe Harvest Festival went well thanks to Branch Chaplain Mike Ficke who conducted the service and Stephen Binnington whose organ playing kept us all somewhere near the tune. Branch chairman Ian Kendall conducted the auction in his own singular fashion and the evening ended up with £90 being raised for the Poppy Appeal. Thanks to all who

donated produce and all that bid for produce but we could do with some more people attending, it is a fun night and the bar is open so come down next year and join in the fun.

The Poppy collecting year ends on September 30th and the total for 2016/17 is £8,856 which I am sure you will agree is a tremendous total for a small village like ours. This is in no small manner due to Lyn Bartlett's efforts with the fortnightly bingo which has raised over £3,000, an incredible effort. People may ask why we still bother with the last WW1 veterans gone now and WW2 being a distant memory to many people (though not to me). Remember though, that with trauma treatment being so good now people that would have died are now surviving and will need care for up to 50 years so this money is vital for their welfare.

My annual fish 'n' chip poppy quiz is on Saturday November 11th which just happen to be Armistice Day so that makes it even more poignant. We have held the price at £7 so fish 'n' chips and fun at that price are a bargain. I do not need a booking but a call so I can give the chip man a rough estimate would be welcome. Team sizes are variable so come down on the 11th and see what it is all about.

Christmas is looming and with that in mind Lyn Bartlett (who else?) is organising a Christmas Fair on November 19th. To book a stall ring 01258 821095, for visitors there will be mulled wine and home made mince pies on sale. All monies raised will as usual go to to Poppy Appeal so please pop down and support us in this worthwhile effort.

The next jumble sale is in January so if you have anything give me a ring I am happy to come and collect.

Meanwhile listen out for a knock on your door from our Poppy sellers who will as usual be braving the elements to raise some money for our service men and women in need.

As usual all are welcome to attend the two minute silence at the memorial on Saturday November 11th at 11 o'clock and the service at St Gregory's on Sunday 12th at 3pm.

Understandably the Parish Council is infuriated by incidents such as the damage in the Rec [Parish mutterings October issue] probably caused by a few hooligans and the consequential costs. But it is neither fair nor right to blame celebrating students who were successful during their exams; indeed I would be surprised if said hooligans will have had any success to celebrate.

Those with children or grandchildren will know how hard their offspring work for their exams and it's wrong to arrive at the conclusion that success in exams leads to vandalism especially as it's expressed as a generalisation and in such dismissive terms. These sorts of comments do nothing for harmony within our Community, indeed they are a grave insult to the vast majority of our industrious youth.

Following my long stay in Yeovil Hospital I am now at home. I very much want to thank all my friends from my own church family but also members of the other churches in Marnhull for their prayers, cards, letters and good wishes. Too many to thank individually. They meant a great deal to me and the family through a very difficult time. Thank you and God Bless you all.

I apologise for missing last month’s edition of The Messenger unfortunately I fractured my wrist and was unable to work. I have now returned and am currently office based. I am looking forward to being back out in the community again!

I have 2 crimes to report between beginning of August and the middle of October these include criminal damage to a building site as well as a burglary including theft of a vehicle.

Burglary is NOT common in this area though they do happen from time to time. Remember to close windows, lock doors when out and make sure sheds, garages and outbuildings are secure too. Don’t make easy for the opportunist to access your home and steal your property. Report any suspicious activity.

ScamsAn HMRC scam has been doing the rounds in Dorset targeting elderly & vulnerable people. Dorset Police has been advised of a second scam whereby individuals are now claiming to be Dorset Police using the 01202 222 222 telephone number requesting details from residents.

Dorset Police would never ask you for your personal details on the telephone and we would never call you from the 01202 222 222 telephone number.

Please be aware and stay vigilant. Do not pass any personal information over the phone or via email. If you receive a call please report this to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

Report suspicious activity either to 101 or via the police website https://www.dorset.police.uk/do-it-online#report

On the 11th October 16 members and 4 guests were entertained and inspired by a talk from The Venerable Tony Wilds.

Tony will soon celebrate 50 years since he was ordained as a priest and has been reflecting on the journey, remembering the seeds that were sown along the way. The journey since theological college has been one of great variety including three years in Zambia, being Chaplain to the Fire Fighters while a vicar at Chandlers Ford, being Archdeacon of Plymouth and then coming to Marnhull – the home of his ancestors. We feel very fortunate that he “came home”.

The next meeting is the Members’ meal at Stourpaine on 8th November

Tensions mount for the beleaguered British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Brian Cox) in the days leading up to the infamous Allied D-Day landings in Normandy, France in June 1944.

Fearful of repeating his deadly mistakes from World War I in the Battle of Gallipoli, exhausted by years of war, plagued by depression and obsessed with his historical destiny, Churchill is reluctant to embark on the large-scale campaign, one that the entire war effort hinges upon.

Swinging tunes such as Sweet Georgia Brown, I’m Comin Virginia and S’Wonderful are followed by meltingly beautiful ballads like My Serenade, Didn’t We and La Chanson De Rue.

The quintet recalls the celebrated Hot Club Quintet Of France with Django Reinhardt as well as the George Shearing or Alan Clare piano-bass-drums quartets.

Pedestrian Experience in Marnhull

I was so pleased to see the letter from GOF in last month’s Messenger talking of the perils of walking down any lane in the village without pavements.

When I moved to Sodom Lane two years ago, I contacted PC Kate Hann because of the regular traffic that pays no attention to the 30 mph speed limit. However, I was disappointed to find that her hands were tied because the only option was do a ‘spot’ check of speeds down Sodom Lane with the proviso that she wore a ‘hi-vis’ jacket so drivers could see her. Hence I think she found only one slightly speeding driver!

Having experienced walking up and down to the PO and village hall on regular occasions these are the difficulties that I have found; People not slowing down and Being driven at, or drivers leaving it to the last moment to pull out.

If I were a horse people would slow down and give me space. I appreciate humans don’t need to be slowed down for as much as horses but being driven at by anything over 25-30 mph is scary.

Even when pushing a buggy or walking on the road with a small child, some drivers still don’t follow the Highway Code which says motorists should give careful consideration to those walking in the road.

Other pedestrians who have had the same experiences as me have suggested alternative methods of dealing with this problem, such as; walking with a heavy implement, such as a spade, sticking out - not a very practical suggestion for everyday. Another was to take an uncontrollable dog with you, cars give them a wide berth!

Perhaps I ought to get a shetland pony and, every time I go for a walk, take it with me? We could also set up ‘driver awareness’ courses to demonstrate what it feels like to have a heavy lump of metal coming at you at speeds of 40mph and more?

Marnhull Music Society

Marnhull Music SocietyDavid Woodhouse’s programme entitled “Music that I Enjoy” was rather like taking his listeners into an auditory sweetshop. There were delights at every turn, pieces we loved but hadn’t heard for too long, colour and melody in strong supply.

He began with part of Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony, which was the lead in to an evening of listening pleasure. For opera lovers there was the quartet from Rigoletto, as rich and filling as treacle toffee, with Pavarotti in magnificent voice, then for contrast a lemon drop in the form of elegant and satisfyingly precise Haydn Surprise Symphony No 24.

Modern times were celebrated by the driving dance rhythms of Leonard Bernstein’s America from “West Side Story” – an opera in all but name in my estimation. We were treated to a virtuoso performance by David Oistrach playing Beethoven’s Romance for Violin and Orchestra, and the first half ended with the hauntingly lovely sound of Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus.

After coffee we started with Mozart’s Salzburg Symphony. The stately and solemn Sarabande by Handel preceded another opera favourite, the duet from Act 1 of La Boheme by Puccini. Then we heard the green and fragrant tones of Vaughan William’s Fantasia on Greensleeves. Does anyone else see music in terms of colour? I often find English music evokes a green sensation. After a short and envigorating burst of Telemann’s Trumpet Concerto the concert finished with Rossini’s William Tell overture. As David said, the first part of this piece with its mosaic of woodwind playing is actually more interesting than the moment when the Lone Ranger bursts onto the scene.

But as usual I will indulge myself with a favourite moment of the evening, and that was Cecelia Bartolli’s heartbreaking interpretation of Handel’s Lascia la Spina – pure sensory delight.

On 11th May we have our Annual Dinner at Udders restaurant and then on 15th our presenter is Alan Thomas.

Marnhull Baby and ToddlersWe have had a lovely few weeks with Mother's day craft on 23rd March, where we made Mother's day stand up cards, we also gave all our lovely Mums a bunch of daffodils, which the children loved presenting.

On 30th March we planted sunflower seeds, the children planted 3 seeds in a plant pot. they enjoyed playing with the soil as well as seeing what the sunflower seeds start like.

The 6th April was our Easter party where we made Easter crowns and chick and bunny pop up cups. The children also enjoyed an Easter egg hunt outside, they all found 2 eggs each.

This months visit to Newstone Nursing home was on 12th April where we had fun entertaining the residents by playing with a parachute with balls. We also played with building blocks, Easter colouring, sang songs and enjoyed a drink and biscuit.

We are doing our sponsored bounce to help the Parish council to raise money for the new play park equipment on 27th April. The children will bounce on the trampoline, where we will see how many bounces they can do in 1 minute.

Then there will be no toddler's on 4th May as the village hall will be used for an election.

Hope you had a lovely Easter.Emma and Dee

The Maidens season has come to its end and another very successful year too. Winners again of the Marnhull Festival and winners of the Wimborne Festival. We have also topped the table of the Ladies TT25 but due to numerous matches being called off, all we really have there is a moral victory.

We did have issues along the way with the opposition at times not being able to fulfil certain fixtures, but the very hard- working background staff, soon rallied and other options were sought and games still played. My sincere thanks to all involved, you are all superstars.

We have very good numbers attending and the future is very bright, there are new teams on the horizon and local too! Buckhorn Weston, Blandford and Sherborne have all started a form of ladies cricket and we will welcome them with open arms, the prospect of matches played locally is exciting, especially with them becoming local derby’s! I so miss the matches played against Stalbridge, the ferocity of the game, extremely competitive yet a smile and a shake of hands at the end, no matter what the outcome.

Winter indoor nets start at Clayesmore this November, alternate Sunday mornings from 10:45-12:45. If you are interested in coming along and joining in then please contact us for the dates, we welcome new members regardless of ability, we have options for all and are a very friendly bunch, the togetherness of the Maidens is their strength, it is encouraged and a huge part of the success so far.

In the light of the amazing Women’s World Cup, which England of course won, Ladies cricket has taken off somewhat, previous players have returned and new people have decided to have a go, all those at Marnhull have found it rewarding, great fun, made new friends and kept fit at the same time! What more could you ask for. We play both hardball and softball cricket, the coaches will assess each individual accordingly so as you are placed in a near perfectly safe environment, we want each person to enjoy what they are doing.

Marnhull MaidensWe have had a lovely few weeks getting to know new mothers and their toddlers and babies. We also welcome the lovely Michelle who is a new volunteer to help us run the group.

We would like to thank the Messenger committee for there grant as the helped us to get our lovely mats now that are for the cars and baby area, so we could get rid of the carpets. This helps us as mats are easier to clean, store, move and they are softer for the children to play on. We will be using the rest of the money from the grant for some new toys and equipment which we will keep you updated about.

On the 5th October we had Diana with her Phoenix cards, it's always lovely having her visit.

We have a busy few weeks ahead as the 19th October will bring us Usborne books coming in and doing a raffle, a nice time to start Christmas shopping.

Then we have half term where we won't be open. Then we come back to celebrate Halloween and bonfire night on the 2nd November. We will be having a Halloween party where you can come dressed up an dwin prizes for the best dressed. There will be pin the spider on the web, spaghetti play, party food and we will have some firework activities too.

The following week 9th November brings us to remembrance where we will be making poppies and wreaths. We are then getting into the Christmas spirit as on 30th November we will be doing our letters to Father Christmas.

On the 14th December it is our Christmas Party where we will have a special visitor, play games and have party food. In the evening is the adults turn to relax and have fun, as it's our annual Christmas meal at The Crown.

Marnhull Baby & Toddlers

We always look forward to September for 2 good reasons. Firstly, it is time to celebrate and commemorate that incredibly brave and historical aerial victory of the Battle of Britain.

Secondly, for 2 weeks, there is a crescendo and climax to our sortie rate to reach and, hopefully, destroy our annual fundraising target. Thankfully, there are strategic targets plenty to visit. Returning crews reported no casualties when collecting house to house!

On the contrary, reception throughout the village was considerably friendly and very generous. Our 2 day run at the Cheese Festival drew much friendly fire, reaped great rewards and saw all returned to base safely despite the weather. In those 2 weeks we not only reached our target of £5000 but overflew it by nearly £2000! A well earned victory deserved a well earned celebration which we did, in style, at the Royal Chase in Shaftesbury.

This tale of success would not be complete without declaring our sincerest thanks to all who made it possible. Thank you for the resilience, tenacity and sheer doggedness of our valiant collectors. Thank you to all who so willingly and generously gave and to the many stores that allowed us to patrol their premises. Thank you to the many that gave personal donations and to those that permitted our boxes to perch on their counters.

Every penny that you have let us collect will go to £8million spent annually by the Association on the welfare needs of those who serve, those who have served, and of their dependents.

No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; …...

any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind.

And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

These words of John Donne, written in the 17th century, seem somewhat at odds with the 20th century’s focus on the individual. The rights of each individual person have been debated, legislated about, sometimes fought over, with great vigour. And yet there have been also great joint endeavours, notably the two world wars, when whole populations were bidden to set aside private concerns and to come together, work together, live and die together, in common cause. In Christian terms, both have to be held together for a rounded understanding of humanity. Each one of us is, as the Book of Psalms has it, ‘fearfully and wonderfully made’, as a unique entity. Yet we are not solitary – ‘no man is an island’ ; we are bound up in the bundle of life with those around us and indeed with creation itself.

November has a way of bringing all this to the fore. Armistice Day, and Remembrance Sunday, have something to say to us both on the universal and intimate level. The great parade takes place at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, with wreaths laid by the representatives of so many nations, and similar ceremonies of remembrance take place in other countries – those of both former allies and former enemies - providing space to reflect on human stupidity and heroism, enmity and self-sacrifice; to remember the past, and to determine again to learn for the future.

Our local observance in the village is not simply a poor copy of the grandeur of the national observance. Although fewer each year have a personal link with those whose names are on our War Memorial, we remember that people like us, from this community and village, were caught up in those events, and we may well ask ourselves: ‘how do we make their sacrifice worthwhile?’

None of us is solitary, and in a well-known hymn Charles Wesley reminds Christians that we are bound up, not only with those presently alive in this world:

‘One family, we dwell in him, one Church, above, beneath; Though now divided by the stream, the narrow stream of death’.

All Saints’ Day and the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed at All Souls-tide both celebrate this mutual belonging. The former celebrates those in whose lives the Church as a whole has seen the grace of God powerfully at work. It is a time to give thanks for that grace, and to be encouraged by their example to recognise that sanctity may grow in the ordinary circumstances of human living. Commemorating our own departed loved ones - those who gave us life and nurtured us, those with whom we have given and received much – draws us closer to them, and to the God who made both them and us , and in whose presence is Life.

Sunday Service. Everyone is welcome to join our service at 10:00am every Sunday and for tea or coffee in the hall afterwards.

We praise and thank God for the continuing recovery of Sally Williams who is now regaining strength at home. We also thank the staff of Yeovil and Shaftesbury hospitals for their skill and care and ask God’s blessing on their ongoing work. Hymn singing has a long tradition in the Methodist Church. Sunday November 5th is an opportunity to join us in some of our favourites in a Songs of Praise service at 10:00am. If you want your favourite to be included, please phone Barbara on 820371 in advance to let us know.

On Remembrance Sunday (12th November) we shall be joining our friends at Saint Gregory’s for a service at 3.00 pm. We thank the Marnhull Messenger Committee for their generous grant which will help us to modernise the sound system in the church.

Hire the HallOur church hall is a good place to hire for family parties and social or other events for individuals, clubs, societies, and classes. Rates are reasonable and bookings can be made by contacting Mrs. Marlene Plowman on 01258 820869.

Significant dates in November1 – All SaintsThe Solemnity of All Saints celebrates all those who are in Heaven, in the light of God’s face – both those recognised by the Church as saints and those known only to the Lord. We ask for their intercession and we strive to follow their example, so that we too can fulfil our vocation to be saints.

2 – All SoulsToday we pray for the souls of the faithful departed and remember particularly those we have known and loved.

9 – Dedication of the Lateran Basilica The Church celebrates the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, the oldest of the four major basilicas in Rome. The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the cathedral of the diocese of Rome, the official ecclesiastical seat of the Holy Father, the Bishop of Rome, not St. Peter's Basilica as so many mistakenly believe. In ancient Rome this was the church where everyone was baptized. It is the oldest church in the West, built in the time of Constantine and consecrated by Pope Sylvester in 324.

26 – Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the UniverseThe last Sunday in Ordinary Time

30 – Saint Andrew, ApostleSt Andrew (1st C) was born in Bethsaida and was a fisherman. He was originally a disciple of St John the Baptist before following Christ, bringing with him his brother, St Peter. After Pentecost he zealously preached the Gospel and was crucified at Patras (Greece).

Bishop’s VisitationThe Right Reverend Mark O’Toole, Bishop of Plymouth, visited our parish during the weekend of 7-8 Oct. He held a meeting with parishioners on Saturday evening and said all three Masses on Sunday.

Parish PeopleLeo Bogdan Kacprzak was baptised at St Benedict’s on 5 Oct.

The following parishioners have died and their funerals were held as follows:

Rosemary Parkhouse - 29 Sep.

Monica Nepean (at 101, our oldest parishioner) - 4 Oct.

Anita Crocker - 5 Oct.

Rodney D’Cruz - 20 Oct.

Marnhull Garden Club

Ruth Jenkins told how she became “The Lady Gardener” when she spoke to the Club last night.

For over 30 years she had worked in a legal office, often very long hours and with much travelling. She had become increasingly disillusioned and wanted out. Eventually, she presented her manager with her resignation – he thought it was just a passing phase, and was horrified when he realised she’d thought it through and really meant it.

She had sufficient years for a decent pension, and bought a little cottage in a Hampshire village, and started out. She started to create a typical cottage garden – hollyhocks, delphiniums, roses etc., spending all her time very happily getting her hands dirty. One day someone asked her to come and deal with their garden – and from there it grew until she had more than she could cope with. She was lucky enough to get a Government grant, bought a small van and took on some helpers.

Ten years later she has a thriving business, more vans and helpers, a small nursery – and is still very happy, particularly when she thinks about what might have been if she hadn’t had the courage to take the first step. There were moments when she wondered – but it all came right.

She then took us through some suggestions for scented plants for this season – wintersweet, sarcocca, witch hazel, (scented) viburnum, osmanthus and of course the wallflowers and violas. She had brought with her some of the Acers she grows, which of course are at their most colourful at this season.

We have the Cheese & Wine party later in the month, and next month’s talk is on the Air Ambulance – visitors are always welcome. The Skittles Evening is, I think, now fully booked for the coach but there may be some space for those willing to drive themselves to the Halsey Arms.

Marcus Dancer’s talk, Scented Plants throughout the Year, was exactly as titled. He not only talked about each plant, he handed round enlarged pictures so we could see what he was extolling.

I won’t go into details of every plant (anyone who wants the complete list, please email me), but he started in January with shrubby Honeysuckle and Daphne bholua Jacqueline Postill, right through the seasons to December, ending with Mahonias and Chimonanthus praecox (Wintersweet). We all learned about some recent introductions – a Thalictrum, a Monarda, Clematis heraclifolia Cassandra and a scented Salvia. He gave us details of each plant’s requirements and of its care.

The following evening, by happy chance, was the Gold Club outing to Castle Gardens who ran out of some of the plants Marcus had mentioned. Malcolm, who was working there that night, complained “I do wish that Alan Tichmarsh, Monty Don and the rest would give us warning of what they’re going to say” – he should have added Marcus to the list!

The other good news is that the Christmas Skittles evening at the Halsey Arms is going ahead, thanks to some very smart footwork by George Stephens and Malcolm Calvin. Other events are: Common Farm Flowers Garden Tour 6th June Tuesday evening tour; Mottisfont Abbey NT 28th June Wednesday coach trip; Garden Party 29th July Saturday @ Stourmead Haines Lane.

The next meeting is 8th May, Wildlife and Archaeological Jewels in N.Dorset Rangers’ Patch, and visitors are always welcome.

Marnhull Yarners - Knit and spin a yarn or two!It seems a long time since we wrote something for the Marnhull Messenger but a lot has happened since 2016. I will try to tell you about it. We received the fleece from Nicola and Alan Denham in June and then were on the search for another spinning wheel, as one between six was a bit slow.

A good friend knew someone who had bought one in an auction for her house. She kindly lent this to me. I struggled for a while because it didn’t look the same as the other one. I took it down to Frank Herrings in Dorchester and the spinning wheel specialist looked slightly puzzled and then announced that it was not a fleece spinning wheel but a flax one! The problem with this was that flax is much thinner than wool and getting the fleece into the hole was hit or miss. So this wheel went back to it’s owner and we now have two spinning wheels that do spin fleece. Watch this space.

Debbie Chisman, Art Teacher, Art for Everyone Marnhull Village Hall, heard we had fleece and very kindly offered to do a session on making felt. This happened in July 2016 and was a lovely afternoon. We all learned a lot and came away with a piece of felt. Elaine Spencer White had hers framed and I made a mobile phone case with matching glasses case. Both very successful. The group has expanded over the the last six months. There are now eight of us, although not all attend each session.

The meetings are generally, at Laburnum Cottage but sometimes we meet in other people’s houses. Please see diary for changes. If you are interested to join the Marnhull Yarners, please call Sioban on 01258 820853. Our next meeting is May 24 2017 at 13.30 at Nash Villa, Nash Lane.

Ritz TeaA big thank you to all the people who came to our big breakfast. The really good side is that we raised a fantastic profit of £577.40 which was beyond our wildest expectations, the down side is people had to wait quite a long time, due to the amount of people coming in at once, and only 2 people to cook the breakfasts!! hope you all understood. Next year we are going to do Baps with any of three fillings or all 3, with toast marmalade tea/coffee. So the wait will be minimal.

We would like to thank Fiddleford Mushrooms, Mrs Crocker -Seniors Farm for the eggs, Monty and Gemma from the crown Marnhull for donating all the baps, and of course all you lovely people who supported us with Cancer Research, which as we all know is a very worthwhile charity. Also thank you to the generosity of people who donated cakes, and raffle prizes, thank you to

Barbara Cornford , Linda Cook for manning the raffle and cake stall, Caroline Collard who cooked all the eggs, and to Doris Chard who’s hands never left the sink all morning. In October we are having Afternoon Tea at the Ritz oops meant at the Rec (Marnhull Village Hall)

It will be a cream tea, complete with finger sandwiches, and sausage rolls. More details to follow at a later date. Once again we hope you will attend our Grand Tea.

Schools

St. Mary’s Catholic School

Children across the school have been making the most of our new Forest Schooling area, getting outside each week rain or shine! The children have practised lashing, made some spangly stars, compared numbers, drunk hot chocolate and even made their own bread. We are looking forward to getting outside with the tools soon!

Both our football and high fives teams have had a great start to the year. They have played matches against Milton Primary School and St George’s Primary, Bourton. The teams have worked hard to and managed to win one match each.

The whole school had the opportunity to work with the Dorset Rock Choir last week. They learnt three contemporary songs and performed these to a thrilled audience. Who would have thought we would have had so many amazing singers!

Our harvest celebration was very well attended this year. We celebrated Harvest with a whole school assembly where each child had the opportunity to present what they had been working on. We collected a huge variety of produce; enough to make up a large hamper that was donated to the Gillingham Food Bank.

With the deadline for new parents to make choices on a school for their four year olds, we will be having an ‘open door’ policy at school. Prospective parents are welcome to call the school on 01258 820417 to organise a tour or just pop into the school office and take a look around at any time. There is also more information available on our website or our Facebook and Twitter sites. We look forward to welcoming you to our school community.

Charlotte Targett - Headteacher

The Jungle Hut have had a busy and fun half term. We have introduced Muddy Walks at Pre School, the children have had lots of fun jumping in muddy puddles and exploring around the fields. We had a great walk through the fields watching the tractors muck spreading, we then went back to Pre School and set out our farm yard.

The children have had a great time setting their own Jungle Hut airport, they made their own passports and used a map of the world to decide where to fly. Staff set out lots of activities about around the world and where we live, children made their own houses, African necklaces, Chinese fans, Eiffel tower pictures and much more. The children have enjoyed showing us photos of their families, bringing in their pets to visit Pre School and making their own faces using differnt materials and talked about what they saw.

We're looking forward to visiting The Fire Station, the children have been using their imagination, creating their own Fire Station and learning about who help us. Next term we're planning about The Gruffalo as the children have taken a lot of interest in The Gruffalo books. We will be going on Gruffalo walks, making Gruffalo crumble and much more.

The Jungle Hut is open 9am - 3pm Monday - Friday term time only. Spaces are available for 2- 4 year olds. Please call 01258 820096 or email [email protected] to come and visit us.

Atom Club - Dorset Science & Technology CentreWe've just about recovered from New Scientist Live. We put our project in front of around 30,000 people (including 3 astronauts) and it was a huge success! We spent some time with the contestants of the recent Astronauts TV show on the day of the final and even had our picture sent to Paolo Nespoli on the International Space Station! Check us out in the picture on the right with Apollo 15 astronaut Al Worden. We've got several pieces of signed memorabilia to give away in upcoming competitions and some for sale in the store.

Thanks to your support, we managed to raise enough funds to finish the next phase of the centre. Funds are still on route to us, but we've managed to start the planetarium and thanks to a new sponsor have also ordered the equipment for the engineering zone. The Mars Rover exhibit has also been sponsored now.

Science & Coding sessions are now available to book via our website: www.atom.club with more sessions coming soon.

It is lovely to see all of our Reception children settled into school so well and growing in confidence as every day goes by. They gave a brilliant singing performance of ‘Dingle Dangle Scarecrow’ at our Harvest Festival service in St Gregory’s Church to the whole school, parents and members of the community. They have also been busy in the kitchen making apple crumble and gingerbread men.

In Rabbit class our Year 1 children have been learning about the county of Dorset and in particular our local village of Marnhull. They had a village walk to find out what sort of buildings and features there were. They found a doctors’ surgery, chemist and the garage workshop. They had a scavenger hunt whilst at the park to find special natural objects such as leaves, acorns and conkers and brought them back to school and displayed them on their reflection table. Afterwards they made a bird’s eye view map of their walk showing the route they took. They have also learnt about famous Dorset people from the past, one of these was Mary Anning who was famous for finding fossils along the Dorset coast. As part of learning about Dorset they have been investigating local food and making some traditional recipes. In Maths the children have learnt to count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and find all the number pairs that make 10. They have had fun becoming expert story tellers and written their own versions of The Little Red Hen.

Year 2 children in Owls class have been busy designing a new bug hotel which they hope to build over the next few weeks and put in our environmental area as a safe hideaway for wildlife. They have been looking to see what natural materials they can find at this time of the year to make the nooks and crannies and tunnels to put inside their hotel.

During this half term we have had lots of visitors come into school to share with the children the many things which have taken place in Dorset and in particular Marnhull over the years including Mrs Wentworth showing the children how Dorset buttons were made and our Year 6 children having a great time with Mr Emery experiencing an archaeological dig through the ages. After finding a dinosaur skull they worked together to reconstruct the skull using various materials to visualise what the dinosaur would have looked like. Children in all classes shared their ‘Dorset’ work with parents in an exhibition.

We are all extremely proud to have received a judgement of ‘GOOD’ following our recent SIAMS inspection. This is a statutory inspection of Anglican and Methodist schools carried out by an Inspector from the Diocese. We believe it reflects the hard work taking place throughout the school on a daily basis and we would like to highlight a few quotes from the inspector to share with you:

“Children work collaboratively, showing care and courtesy, with good examples being the buddy system which pairs up different year groups with elder children taking their responsibility of being role models seriously.” “Staff model the quality of relationships expected in their interactions with both children and parents.”

“Children were also involved by considering which Christian values reflected their community so they have some ownership of these. They identified: respect, friendship, thankfulness, honesty, forgiveness and courage. Children have a growing understanding of these values as each has been considered and are now being explored at a deeper level, describing what these look like in daily life. The introduction of values awards, where children are nominated either by staff or peers when they show values in their daily life, has enhanced children’s understanding because reasons for the award are shared so children appreciate where values make a difference. Each term a Christian value is explored in some depth and linked to the ‘growth mind set’ strategy which effectively develops children’s attitudes to learning. Children talk confidently about where they use values to help them become successful learners. “

We have had an amazing half term in school with so much learning across all year groups and it is hard to believe that our half term holiday is nearly upon us.

From us all at St Gregory’s.

St. Gregory’s C.E.VA Primary SchoolSt. Mary's Explorers

Explorers have had a wonderful start to the new school year. It has been great welcoming our new children who have all settled quickly. Over the summer, staff were busy expanding over two rooms and the children have enjoyed learning and playing in a larger space. Within the rooms we have clearly defined areas where the children access a plethora of play opportunities. They can develop their imagination and storytelling skills in our domestic role play and small world areas. We snuggle down for stories in our book corner. They get creative in our messy area and become little engineers in our construction area. We also provide lots of opportunity to developing mark making and maths skills. With all these opportunities there is always something exciting for our little learners to engage in.

This month we have been busy discovering the treasures of Autumn, it’s always lovely to see the children’s reactions to the beauty of nature. We have been collecting leaves, talking about their colours and creating artwork with them. The children have enjoyed collecting conkers and experimenting to see how far they could roll them using different ramps. Welly walks to the school nature area have provided lots of hands on experiences and we are looking forward to our first forest school session this week!

In our messy area this month we have been led by the children’s interest in worms! We created a mud puddle with chocolate gloop and added some wiggly jelly worms. The children enjoyed this sensory activity and talked about the different textures. They also enjoyed making marks in the gloop, counting the worms and collecting them in pots using tweezers. It smelt delicious too!

Garden Reflections for the month of... ...November

A Year in a Day – Part 2:The Afternoon & Evening – Whatever happened

to summer:“Whatever happened to summer?” Oh, we English. They say we’re always talking about the weather and this summer has been no different. For some it is too hot, for others too cold; for some it is too dry or otherwise too wet. It is – and it always will be – too ‘something’ for ‘someone’ but for everyone it is always different, always varied and always a ubiquitous part of our national conversation. It is this constant variation that keeps England the “… green & pleasant land…” that it is.

July is early afternoon for our year condensed into a day. It makes admirable initial efforts to recover from the wet, cold, northerly winds that the hour of June left us with. Just as we tried to recover from the shocks of having the hottest day for 20 years only a few days previously; an election result that nearly became a rout; terrorist attacks across the country and a fire in a London tower block that shook the nation!

As mid-month draws near there is some hope of returning to those balmy summer days. But, as The Fest approaches, many eyes are watching the forecast – and it does not look good! Then, that which previously had ‘not looked good’, deteriorated!

To say it rained for the Fest would be somewhat of an understatement – it ‘monsoon-ed’, before, during and after! But still the village turns out, still there are sunny spells (very short ones) and still there is a lot of fun. Despite the weather, it is a great Fest.

By mid-afternoon there is talk of an Indian summer. It’s the hour of August and the plants are now well watered after that early summer drought; in fact some are awash leaving their flowers and leaves weighted down by water and battered by wind.

Evenings are starting to draw in due to the heavy clouds and the smell of wood-burning stoves is in the air. Eventually a warm breeze returns and holds its course sufficient to provide an unusually pleasant Bank Holiday weekend. But that end also marks the end of meteorological summer.

The early evening of September is upon us but there is no sign of the warmth returning. The wet and windy weather batters the struggle from many of the remaining flowers, knocking fruit from the trees and turning the autumn soft fruits soggy.

October; and evening is now here. The leaves change colour and start falling from the trees. We are tantalised by a late demonstration of what an Indian summer could have been - but it is too late. The clocks fall back giving us that welcomed extra hour in bed but the days get shorter, the nights come quicker and the temperatures get cooler. In the garden it’s a time of bulb planting, chopping back plant growth, mulching, covering and preparing for winter.

The nights draw in and our day draws to a close. The hour of November is here and our thoughts turn to Christmas, log fires, cold days and, of course, those Christmas and New Year parties! An opportunity may arise offering to help everyone in the village, and their guests, clear the fog of such extended merriment. If it does, here is some advice:

Remember these words, hear what I say,Be ready for bacon on New Year’s Day.

Join those for a stroll to shake off the fog,It’s an attempt at a remedy . . .

Friends Against Scams

Would you, your family, your community, or workplace like to understand more about scams and why people can become scam victims?

If so then join others to become one of a growing number of ‘Friends Against Scams’.

Financial abuse through scams affects the lives of millions of people across the UK. More than £5 billion is lost to scams in the UK each year. People who are scammed will lose money and may also suffer a loss of independence, of good health and of wellbeing. Many people do not report being a victim, but silence is a scammer’s best friend.

Championed in Dorset by Dorset County Council Trading Standards Service, ‘Friends Against Scams’ is a national initiative that aims to

• Highlight the scale of the problem by getting communities talking about scams

• Change the perceptions of why people become scam victims

• Prevent people from becoming or continuing to be a scam victim

• Recruit people to join the fight against scams, turning knowledge into action

For more information on how to become a ‘Friend Against Scams’ visit www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk

Anyone can become a scam victim, if it has happened to you contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06 who will take this situation seriously. This helpline is the first point of contact for consumers seeking advice or wishing to report a problem to trading standards.

Turning Back The ClocksChanging the mileage on a car, ‘car clocking’, is on the rise. It is thought that this could be due to the fact that it is easier now that more cars have digital odometers. Businesses can offer mileage adjustment services which will alter the mileage if a reading gets corrupted. Currently this service is legal but the EU is looking to make it an illegal practice by May 2018.

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2016 traders can be prosecuted for changing odometer readings. A case in the North West earlier this year saw over 100 cars have their mileage adjusted amounting to 7.5 million ‘lost’ miles. The prison sentences for those involved ranged from 15 months to three years.

When buying a second hand car there are things that you can look out for:- Chips on the paintwork may indicate lots of motorway driving and high mileage;- Worn rubber pedals, steering wheels and seat belts indicate lots of use;- Check the mileage on old MOT certificates and service history;- Ask the previous keeper what the mileage was when they sold it.

The average car travels 10,000 miles a year so if the car looks like it has more wear and tear than expected it may have been ‘clocked’. Check MOTs on line at https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history. Information held by the DVLA about a vehicle’s identity can be found at https://www.gov.uk/get-vehicle-information-from-dvla.

Look out for trading standards approved car retailers displaying the Buy with Confidence logo, or visit the website buywithconfidence.gov.uk Call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06 for advice on buying a second-hand car, or to report something to trading standards.

Dorset Dragonflies Chasers, darters, skimmers, Emerald and Golden – just the names of these prehistoric aerial acrobats delight and intrigue. Dragonflies are spectacular air borne predators that can be found worldwide, and Dorset is home to many of the UK’s 25 different species.

Climate change is already leading to species extending their range northwards, and Dorset is now becoming home to species that have not previously been recorded here. Hampshire dragonfly recorder, Pete Allen, will cover this interesting aspect in his talk on ‘Dorset Dragonflies’ on Wednesday, 15th November, at 7.30pm in Fontmell Magna Village Hall (SP7 0PF).

Refreshments are included in the £2 entry and there is no charge for children under 16. Everyone is welcome to attend our talks – membership of DWT is not essential.
