TAMPA - The chief of the Tampa
Hillsborough County Expressway
Authority was fired seven months after
acolumn collapsed under an elevated
expressway that had become his
signature project.The authority's board of directors
votedMonday to replace Pat McCue, the
authority's executive director since
1996.

TAMPA - Walking is the most dangerous mode
of transportation in the United States, and it can
be particularly deadly in Tampa, St. Petersburg
and Clearwater, a national report released
Thursday says.
The Tampa area ranks second to Orlando in
having the most dangerous streets in the nation
for pedestrians, with those 70 and older the most
likely to die, according to the Surface
Transportation Policy Project's annual study.

its certification to bid on future state
bridge projects after a meeting with
state Department of Transportation
officials today, the company will
remain on the job at the troubled
Memorial Causeway Bridge.
The meeting, scheduled for this
afternoon in Tallahassee, will mark
the company's second attempt to
explain the cause of a litany of
problems at the stalled, $70 million
bridge project and at the John
Ringling Causeway Bridge project
that PCL completed last year in
Sarasota. But under its contract with the state,
