Community Choral Singby Scott Andrews

Every year it is our honor to host the annual Com-munity Choral Sing here at First Baptist Church Sevierville.

This event was begun over 40 years ago by the Tuesday Evening Music Club here in Sevierville. Many years later the Music and Arts Festival took over sponsorship of the event as it became the opening event for the week long festival. For a time, the Downtown Association sponsored this event. Currently, the churches involved have continued the tradition of bringing Sevierville area churches together on the first Sunday night in May for a celebration of praise.

The churches that have participated include: First United Methodist Church of Sevierville, St. Joseph the Carpenter Episcopal Church, Parkway Church of God, Kodak United Methodist Church, First Pres-byterian Church of Sevierville, Smoky Mountain Christian Church, New Hope Church of God and, of course, our church. The Gathering, a relatively new church in the area, will join the celebration this year. The event features two songs by each choir and concludes with all the choirs coming together to join their voices in praise with two songs.

This event is always a highlight on our church cal-endar as the churches all bring their different styles of worship together. The choirs meet on Sunday afternoon before the Community Choral Sing to rehearse the combined choir songs and then to rehearse their songs before the program begins at 6:30 p.m. There is no other event like it around. The music is always spiritually uplifting and the fellow-ship of the churches brings joy to the participants and the listeners. Come join with the choirs in lift-ing praise to our Lord as we celebrate Him.

Community Choral Sing Featuring Sevierville area choirs Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 6:30 p.m.

Why am I so vocal in my appreciation for them? To quote an old, old line, “Let me count the ways”.

Strong Biblical Belief SystemsEach of the men on our staff has the highest possible view of the Word of God. Because of this, they do all they can to live their lives and equip the members of our fellowship accordingly.

Obvious Love of the LordThey each have a personal, daily walk with the Lord that is constantly growing. These men are fellow believers. These men are fellow fully-devoted followers of Jesus Christ and are not ashamed of that fact.

“Second Mile” MentalityI thank God I do not work with clock punchers. I think that I would find that irritating and slightly repulsive. Being called into ministry is a 24/7 calling. The men that serve as our associate pastors are not bothered with extra hours and long days. They have a “whatever it takes” kind of attitude.

Page 2 | First Baptist Church of Sevierville

Enjoyment of Their CompanyThere’s a sweet fellowship among our pastoral staff. Together we have laughed a lot, prayed a lot and wept our share of tears.

No Turf to ProtectIt is obvious that our associate pastors are passionate about what they do and their particular ministry assignments. But it is a joy to see them doing all they can to lift each other up. They do not “protect their turf” with ungodly jealousy. On the contrary, they realize that it’s all about His Kingdom and not personal kingdoms.

Excellent LeadershipSimply put, they do what they do extremely well. Certainly no one is perfect, but this staff strives to present to the Lord a ministry that is well pleasing to Him.

Understanding of FriendshipI love and appreciate my brothers.

Now more than ever before, it is a joy to be your pastor.

Dead Noses Smell No RosesIt is always a good thing to tell people how you feel about them. I want to take the opportunity in this month’s First Word to express a word of gratitude for all our associate pastors. We should never take for granted that we have one of the best pastoral staffs in the country. I have such personal and deep appreciation for Scott Andrews, Jerry Hyder, Scott Carter, Craig Mintz, Royce Bailey, Roland Maddox and Chris Kirby. Dear church family, please constantly let these men know how much you appreciate them.

How can we pray for the Class of 2010?

That I will grow closer to Jesus than ever before

Stay committed to Christ in college.

Stay focused in college.

Stay strong in my faith through college.

For me not to fall into temptation

That I never forget where I came from and that I can help others.

Help to make wise decisions in the future

Thoughts From Our Graduating Seniorsby Chris Kirby (assisted by Jeff Schoenfield and Kellye Kirby)

What are life lessons you learned from FBC?

Show me who you run with and I will show you what you soon shall be.

Surround yourself with Christians.

My faith is real, unshakeable, and founded on God’s infallible word.

Share faith without fear.

Show kindness to everyone.

Love Jesus.

Always keep God first.

Be a light to others.

Always pray for guidance.

Have a good foundation in Jesus Christ.

Stay in the Word, always!

Alex McCandless won the regional high school Heisman and represented his school, his church, his region, and most importantly his Lord in New York City. Alex will be running track at the University of Tennessee.

Zack Burnett will be swimming at the University of Tennessee after a very successful high school swimming career.

Kel McCarter will be playing football at the University of the Cumberlands after being an integral part of a Sevier County team that had a 10-0 regular season.

Alex Byrd won “fan of the game” for his display of school spirit, and in his interview, proposed to local reporter, Heather Harrington.

It is my pleasure to present to you the High School class of 2010. This class has been characterized by strong leadership, passion for the Lord, and faithfulness to their church. Scott and I are very proud of them and look forward to seeing what God is going to do through their lives and ministries. The following are responses from the high school graduating seniors:

Lexxi Schoenfield discovered her calling to work with special needs children.

Rachel Turner has served as team leader for our dance team, Undignified.

Tiffany Hodge has played guitar and helped lead worship at youth nights and Sevier County FCA.

Alex McCandless & Dominic Kendall preached at the evening service on April 25, 2010.

Students from this class will be attending several colleges and universities including Maryville College, MTSU, Walters State, UTK, Johnson Bible College, Carson-Newman, ETSU, & The University of the Cumberlands.

What advice do you give those who follow?

Have a quiet time everyday!

The really cool people in high school who make poor decisions aren’t going to be so cool after school when they have to pay for their choices.

Don’t become lazy, stand firm in your faith.

Pray.

Stay in church and always be prepared.

Be your own person, don’t conform to some group.

Always keep God first in your life.

Do the right thing no matter what!

Your reputation is your most valuable asset!
