Hey FUMC Family,
Check out this week's Elevate Top 5!
1) We had a BLAST at Elevate last week as we
started our new series called WOKE. We're look-
ing at stories in the Bible where people woke up
to a new understanding of God and stories that
may seem like they don't have a place in the Bi-
ble that can help us wake up in our understanding
of God. Last week we talked about the story of Ehud. Check it out! It's in
Judges 3 and it's way too wild to go into here in the Top 5, but what we
took away from the story is that God creates us the way we are for a rea-
son! Often times, it's our "weirdness" that God uses for big things in our
lives! It was a great night!
2) This week is our LAST regular Elevate of the semester! How crazy is
that!? We've got some other fun stuff lined up throughout the end of the
semester, but only ONE more time before Christmas where we'll get to
sing, play, eat, and learn together. Let's really make it a good one! Bring
some friends and let's pack the youth room!!
3) November 19 is our annu-
al Canned Food Scavenger
Hunt! Prepare your cup-
boards to be raided! We'll
divide into groups (based on
life groups) and hit the
neighborhoods asking for
canned goods to bless our
local food pantry during the
holiday season. We'll get
started at our regular time
(5:30) and be done by 7:30.
4) During the month of December we've got a LOT of holiday fun! On De-
cember 3 we're having a Christmas Movie Night in the youth room! We'll
provide the hot cocoa and you provide your favorite movie snack! We're
voting on which movie to watch
THIS WEEK at Elevate, so be sure
to come let your voice be heard!
On December 10 we're saying
THANK YOU to our volunteers
with a volunteer appreciation
night, and on the 17th we'll do
our Progressive Dinner Christmas
Party! That's a full month of
Holiday Cheer that you can be a
part of!
5) IMPACT Weekend registration opens THIS SUNDAY! I'll be sure to send
out an online registration link this week! Be sure to register early to take
advantage of the Early Bird Registration rate of $85. This is sure to be one
of the best weekends of the year! We don't want ANYONE to miss out on it!
That's all for now. God looks good on you —
Britt

The Treasure of My Resources
It has been said that there are two responses to sermons on tithing: some
people say, “Tell 'um preacher!” But most people say, "the church is
talking about money again." I used to think that as well. As a preacher,
I hated to talk about money because I knew people had those attitudes.
In time, I realized something important about money and my relationship
with God. I learned that attitude about money was more of a heart prob-
lem than a money problem. I learned that my financial stewardship was
more about my discipleship than my money. The late Larry Burkette was
one of the pioneers in Christian financial management; he often said, "the
number one outside visible indicator of a person's relationship with God
was the tithe."
I believe that in the same way God wants us to grow in prayer, Scripture
and serving others, he wants us to grow in financial stewardship. In these
four ways, we demonstrate that we have put God first in our lives. So, we
give, not because the church needs the money, but because we need to
give.
Many people find giving the full tithe (10% of our income) is a difficult
step to take, given their current financial responsibilities, but there is a
way to grow in it. Look at your present giving and determine what per-
centage of your income it represents. If you currently give 2% of your in-
come (which is the national average) decide to increase it to 3% this year
and every year as God prospers you. You will find that God honors those
who honor him.
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Alan
“Let the lower lights be burning! Send a gleam across the wave!”…
The words above are from the refrain of the old hymn, “Let the Lower Lights be Burning.”
It can be found in the Cokesbury Hymnal. Not only does this hymn reinforce the Great
Commission but also it speaks to our need to dedicate ourselves to missions. The entire
hymn is as follows:
“Brightly beams our Father’s mercy from His lighthouse evermore; but to us He gives the
keeping of the lights along the shore. Let the lower lights be burning! Send a gleam
across the wave! Some poor fainting, struggling seaman you may rescue, you may save.
Dark the night of sin has settled, loud the angry billows roar; eager eyes are watching,
longing for the lights along the shore. Trim your feeble lamp, my brother! Some poor seaman, tempest tossed,
trying now to make the harbor in the darkness may be lost. Let the lower lights be burning! Send a gleam across
the wave! Some poor fainting, struggling seaman you may rescue, you may save.”
I think the phrase that sticks out in my mind is “Trim your feeble lamp, my brother.” When you consider its
meaning, you realize that it is a comment on human nature. In the best of times and with the best of intentions
sometimes we allow our excitement for an important mission to wane. I realize that I do. This is simply reminding
us that we have to keep our light bright. We cannot let it dim. Just as Don Quixote did with Aldonza as I
mentioned a couple of weeks ago, we cannot give up.
At this time of an emphasis on stewardship, we truly need to be aware of the real needs of our mission. We have
a mission program in this church which is funded by you. Please remember that when you are considering your
pledge.
I look forward to seeing you this Sunday when the Joyful Singers choir will be our service choir at the 11:00 a.m.
service and the hand bells will be playing at both services.
God bless,
Billy
