Sue’s Musings -

A Change of Seasons

Summer is nearing an end, fall is moving inevitably

toward us. Fall is a little odd, when you think about it.

Trees drop their leaves, animals go into hibernation,

nights get shorter. Yet in the church this is when things

begin – people are back from vacations, college students

leave home to a new adventure, school starts for our

younger people. In church, Sunday school starts,

programming that has taken a hiatus during the summer

reactivates, and life gets busy again. Somehow we’ve

gotten off track with the seasons! But that just means we

all have something to look forward to!

The change of seasons often means growth and change. It

asks something of us – it asks us to grow with the change,

and to embrace a future that is always a bit unknown,

trusting that God is there before us, and will meet us

there. I don’t know what he future holds for me, or for us,

for that matter, except I do know that God has been busy

with us and in us, and this coming year is going to be a

time of growth for us, and change. Won’t you be a part of

that growth and change? Discover with us what God is

doing, and where God is leading us.

Some of the things we’ve already got planned for the next

few months are:

Finishing sprucing up the inside, and using our

entrances and hallways to tell visitors and guests

who we are.

Finishing sprucing up the outside, opening it up,

working on parking, and visibility, and keeping

our building in good shape.

We have Jan Edmiston, Co-Moderator of the PCUSA

General Assembly, joining us on August 20 for

worship and lunch.

On September 10, Sunday School starts up with a

bang.

On Sept 30 Woman of the World will perform for

Arts for the Soul, and join us for worship on

October 1, World Communion Sunday.

Confirmation Class will begin.

In our lead-up to the 500th anniversary of the

Protestant Reformation, look for a sermon series

in October celebrating the continual reformation

God has lead the church through during those

years.

On October 29, Reformation Sunday, Brain Ellison

from the Covenant Network of Presbyterians will

join us to talk about the next reformation the

church is facing,

And there’s not enough space to talk about what we’ve

got planned for November and December!

None of this is worth anything, without you, so welcome

back if you’ve been away, see you soon if we’ve seen you

over the summer, and join us in embracing the

excitement, ministry and future God has in store for us!

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN

Throughout the past year, PW has helped organize the receptions for the Arts for the Soul concerts. Brian Pfoltner has

expressed his appreciation for our help with this the 10th Anniversary Year of the concerts. We also thank everyone

who has helped. Joan Berglund has been coordinating these receptions but starting the season of 2017-2018, Lynne

Hughes will be in charge of organizing the reception committees.

Jean McBride was awarded the Presbyterian Women's Honorary Life Membership pin at her circle meeting on June 7.

She joins a group of dedicated women who have worked to nurture our faith and support the mission of the church.

First Church greatly appreciates all that she has done for both the church and the women's groups.

Presbyterian Women have also been coordinating the Sunday night dinners for the Youth Group. This has been greatly

appreciated by both David Kamran and Kris Brammer. Starting this fall season, Christy Abraham will be the

coordinator for these dinners. And again, we thank all of you who have so willingly participated in this wonderful

endeavor.

Lastly, Pastor Sue and PW have decided on some changes in the funeral reception policy. The groups are listed below

with Terri Sherman being the Coordinator. The major change is that instead of a group doing all the funerals for a

month, a group will do a funeral and the next one will go to the following group. Terri will coordinate this as we all

know sometimes the group assigned isn't able to take the responsibility so allowances are made and sometimes groups

exchange places. Additional help from both men and women is always welcome and if you are able to join a group,

please let the church office know. (continued on next page)

Co-Moderator of the PCUSA Visits!

Co-Moderator Jan Edmiston, will be here Sunday, August 20, to lead

us in worship and, if her flight schedule allows, stay after for a lunch and

discussion about the denomination.

Her sermon that day will be related to Liz Theoharis' book, "Always

With Us: What Jesus Really Said About The Poor." This is the book

Jan and co-moderator Denise Anderson have chosen as the second "One

Church/One Book" selection, inviting the church nation-wide to read and

discusstogether. So read the book, come to worship, take the

opportunity to ask questions about what Jan is seeing as she travels

around the denomination,

and enjoy good worship and fellowship!

The Bair Educational Award Scholarship Committee wants to let all students, entering the new school year,

Elizabeth Peterson, Megan Sattler, Nyalat Buom, and Maddy Diedrichsen, our Bair Educational Award

Recipients, who each received a $2225.00 Scholarship for the coming school year! For the 18th year this

committee has had the joy of giving scholarships to amazing young people of First Church!!
