Brother Knights of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, October is one of our traditional months for growing our Order by growing our councils. But we also know that encouraging prospective members to join our Order is a 365 day a year opportunity. An opportunity to share the Catholic rooted friendship which all brother Knights around the world enjoy as we work together putting our faith into action. It’s not too late to come up with a plan to hold a “Delta Church Drive” or host a Fraternal Benefits night at you parish open to all. Yes October and March are traditional months, but they are far from a hard and fast rule. With this issue we share with you our current Growth Status here in the Archdiocese. You can still find the Arch Monthly Checklist on page 2 and a superb article by Arch Membership Director South, Dan Warnock on page 4. Brother Knights of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati,

Membership-October Church Drive

Dan Warnock, Archdiocese of Cincinnati Membership Director (South)

When I first joined the Knights of Columbus 23 years ago we were encourage by our membership directors to “just ask”! This in reference to just asking a fellow parishioner or other practical catholic gentleman if he is interested in joining the worlds largest fraternal order the Knights of Columbus. While the “Just Ask” mantra is still in vogue the K of C has in place many other new strategies to increase membership all the while making it easier to become a knight and increasing our numbers.

At my home council we have picked up new members via the “Online Membership” option that is available on Supremes website (kofc.org). When a prospect joins the K of C using this option your officers will be notified with his contact information. Contact the member ASAP and invite him to your council either to a business meeting or social and promptly set up a date for him to take his 1st degree. Get him involved through your programs and remember, one of the requirements of achieving the Shining Armor Award is to recruit one new member during his first year.

Every council should have a Membership Committee in place that has laid out a strategy for their October Church Drive. Pamphlets and other recruitment materials can be ordered from Supplies Online.

Does your council have a Church Drive plan? • Get permission from your pastor to set up a recruitment table in your gathering space or whatever space

works best for you.• Put a blurb in the bulletin announcing your council will be holding a membership drive after all Masses.• Every council has that one guy who is out going and engaging. A natural recruiter if you will. Utilize his skills

and have him be your front man.• Double team prospects. Two heads are better than one and you will better be able to answer a prospects

questions with this approach.• Have you ever read the back of the form 100? I’m guessing most guys have not, myself included until one

day when I was recruiting guys after Mass for new council development. There is great information telling prospects what the Knights of Columbus are all about.

• Always be kind and courteous when recruiting. NEVER BADGER prospects! Some guys just aren’t ready to join. But don’t forget to ask them again in a year or two down the road.

• Don’t forget the October incentive, The Spook-Tactular Incentive! Every council that brings in 5 new members this month will get $25 and every council that brings in 10 you will receive $50.

The first quarter of the fraternal year has come and gone. Now for round two! May all our councils put their best foot forward this October and make an earnest effort to recruit new members. This is after all the life line of our order.

Vivat Jesus!
