FROM THE PASTORS

Some people find November a discouraging month. As leaves drop and daylight hours shorten, a certain gloominess Sets in. But someone will surely respond, saying, “It won’t last! In a few months spring will arrive and so too the green leaves.” We love an encourager! In the town of Leiden, Holland, a church has a plaque devoted to the memory of one of its former ministers. The plaque says, “In Memory of Rev. John Robinson, Pastor of the English Church on this spot AD 1609-1625, whence at his prompting went forth the Pilgrim Fathers to settle New England in 1620. Buried under this house of worship, 4 Mar 1625.” Note how the inscription says that the Pilgrims went to New England “at the prompt-ing” of Rev. Robinson. America, the New World, offered those Pilgrims an opportunity to make a new life and establish a colony where they could worship as they desired. Robinson himself never traveled to New England, yet he inspired others to go. He inspired others to do something worthwhile. He was an encourager!

As we move towards this season of Thanksgiving, the goal of being an encourager is still a worthy one. It certainly beats being a “discourager” or someone who gripes about what others have done or are doing. A complainer or a fault-finder is such an unpleasant person. No one enjoys a curmudgeon!

When Jesus met the tax-collector Zacchaeus, Jesus did not scold him for his actions. Instead, Jesus encouraged him by asking to dine at his home. Jesus was an encourager and the greatest model of encouragement we have. He forgave people and gave people new life, because he desired to lift people up to God, no matter their mistakes. Bless yourself and bless others with encouragement. It’s God’s way. Thank God indeed for those who encourage us and seek to lift others up to new life.

Monthly Mission Partner

Women’s Studies

We will meet Wednesday, November 1st in the library at 10:15. We will continue to study “Names of

God” and will discuss the seventh lesson. Please bring a sandwich and

something to share for lunch. All ladies of the church are welcome.

Come and bring a friend.

Thanks to the generous contributions of our FPCH congregation, we raised approximately $4,000. to aid in recovery for victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Also, this year we have sent $2,000. from our Mission Budget for the South Sudan Project. These funds were sent to the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and we wanted to share who they are and what they do so our parishioners can understand their contributions at work.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance enables congregations and mission partners of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) to witness to the healing love of Christ through caring for communities adversely affected by crisis and catastrophic events.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is the emergency and refugee program of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. The core budget, including staff and administrative costs, is funded through the One Great Hour of Sharing, and its program work is additionally funded through designated gifts. No donations to the Disaster Relief Fund are used for overhead.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance:

• Focuses on the long term recovery of disaster impacted communities.

• Provides training and disaster preparedness for presbyteries and synods.

• Works collaboratively with church partners and members of the ACT Alliance (Action by Churches Together) internationally, and nationally with other faith based responders.

• Connects partners locally and internationally with key organizations active in the response — United Nations, NVAAD (National Voluntary Agencies Active in Disaster), World Food Program, Red Cross, FEMA and

others. • In PDA, we see the love of Christ at work through the actions of volunteer work teams, through the ministry of

those offering hospitality and helping their communities to recover, and in the lives of survivors. One final note: The PDA will often contact Presbyterian churches to alert them to dire circumstances both nationally and internationally. Hence, our contribution to South Sudan, where the country continues to suffer from recurring and deteriorating humanitarian crises in which more than 2.29 million people have fled their homes and are without food, water, or shelter.

The church has designated funds in the Mission Ministry Budget for such opportunities, thanks again to the

generous giving of our congregation both through pledges and contributions. When an emergency situation, as in

South Sudan, is brought to the attention of the Mission Ministry Team and Session, we can vote for funds to be sent

from this special budget.

OCTOBER HAPPENINGS

October 15 was Bluegrass Sunday at Highlands First Presbyterian. Thanks to the generosity of Ray and Diane McPhail, who underwrote our guest musicians, we were delighted to welcome area bluegrass band Charles Wood and Friends. The congregation could not keep from singing along and tapping their feet to old favorites such as Keep On the Sunny Side, I Saw the Light, and I'll Fly Away!

Our Guest Musician on Sunday, October1st was trumpeter Larry Black. Chancel Choir tenor Garrett Whipkey stirred the congregation with a beautiful rendition of the Moses Hogan spiritual Give Me Jesus, and Peter Ray of the Friendship Center gave a moment for mission.

On Sunday, October 8th we were fortunate to have solos by two of our choir interns, as well as a saxophone performance by Garrett Whipkey. Keely Smith sang the solo part of the Chancel Choir's anthem, Jesus Calls Us, and Christine Reeder sang Hear My Cry, O God as the Offertory. Sadly, this was Garrett's last Sunday with us, as he has accepted a position in Asheville. We will greatly miss him, but we wish him all the best. Sarah Thomas, director of the Black Mountain Home for Children, Youth and Families, gave the Moment for Mission on October 8th, describing the splendid and much-needed work of this organization.

The young voices of the Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School's "Gap Singers" graced our worship service on October 22. The group is directed by Allegra Boggess, and accompanied by eleventh grader Ziang "Leo" Lu from China.

October 29 worship service.

CHANCEL CHOIR NEWS Welcome to our new choir members Rick Trevathan and Keith Crawford, and also to new student Interns Christine Reeder, Soprano; and Jay Bowman, Tenor. The Chancel Choir is sad to lose longtime choir members Phyllis Tietze and Bob Wright who have recently retired from the choir. Tenor student intern Garrett Whipkey’s last Sunday with us was October 8th as he has taken a position as tenor section leader at the Episcopal Cathedral of All Souls in Asheville, NC, where he now lives. If you are a singer, you are invited to join the Chancel Choir. Rehearsals take place in the choir room on Wednesday evenings from 6:00pm-7:30pm.

EMPTY BOWLS

The FPCH Food Pantry Fundraiser was a great success with just under $10,000.00 raised and over 350 people in attendance. A special thank you to event Chair Jane Jerry, the Congregational Care Committee, and our chef Marty Rosenfield. We are grateful to the Bascom and other potters and wood turners for their beautiful crafted bowls and the many restaurants for providing soup, bread, and dessert. We must also mention the many volunteers that made it all possible. There were a lot of groups and individuals within the community who pulled together to make this event successful and fun.
