Make this year a time to renew your commitment to peacemaking as
part of your calling as a follower of Christ. Our congregation is encouraged to retain 25 percent of the Offering it receives to use for
local ministries of peacemaking within the church and its community. Twenty-five percent is used by presbyteries and synods, and 50 percent is used by the General Assembly ministries through the
Presbyterian Peacemaking Program. We will receive this offering on October 7.
Matthew Christopher, grandson of Theda
Christopher and Carole & Jim Hepp, is currently stationed in Afghanistan. He
would love to receive mail and stay connected to his family and friends back home. If you would like to send a card or
just drop him a line, his address is:

When is the proper time to celebrate Holy Communion? Is there a proper time? Some
churches celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion every Sunday. Some celebrate it once a
month; some only a couple times per year. Here at Covenant we average about once a month,
but we try to tie in our celebration with special dates on the Christian calendar. But even that
isn’t totally true! I have been asked a few times (it’s not a real burning issue for us!) how we
determine our communion dates. It’s real scientific, as you will discover! Here’s our “normal”
calendar – are you ready for this?
First Sunday of Advent (four Sundays before Christmas – late November or early
December – often times the Sunday after Thanksgiving)
Christmas Eve
Christmas Day (if it falls on a Sunday)
First Sunday of Lent (6 weeks before Easter – anywhere from February 9 to March 14)
Maundy Thursday (the Thursday before Easter)
Easter (anywhere from March 22 to April 25!)
Pentecost (50 days after Easter – anywhere from May 10 to June 13!) We also celebrate Communion on the 1st or 2nd Sunday of the New Year, depending on when
New Year’s Day falls (I mean what day of the week – I know New Year’s Day falls on the
1st!). Then we pick a Sunday during the summer months (usually a Sunday in July) to celebrate
communion. Then, as we gather back for two services in the fall, we celebrate communion on
the 2nd Sunday of September. Now add World Communion Sunday to the schedule and the
schedule is almost complete. I say almost, because sometimes the session decides to add a
celebration. The session decided to celebrate communion as part of our healing service back
on Saturday, August 18th. That’s our schedule. I warned you it was real scientific! I probably made it seem more
difficult that it really is! Thanks to those who prepare the elements for communion as well as
those who serve. Keeping up with this varied schedule is no easy task World Communion Sunday – it used to be called World Wide Communion Sunday – is a
special time for us to gather with Christians all around the world and remember that we are
one body, the Body of our Lord and Savior, Jesus, the Christ. Whether we are Presbyterians or
Lutherans, Episcopalians or Methodists, Roman Catholics or Baptists, we are part of the Body
of Christ. Whether we celebrate communion on a regular basis, or irregular like we do, we are
part of the Body of Christ. Whether we sit in our chairs to receive communion, or go forward
to receive the elements, we are part of the Body of Christ. Whether we use unleavened or
leavened bread, or whether we use wine or grape juice, we are part of the Body of Christ. Join the Body of Christ on Sunday, October 7, for World Communion Sunday.
