Easter actually spans fifty (50) days, beginning Easter morning and lasting through Pen- tecost. We refer to this season as Eastertide, and it is the reason why we still display our Easter banner, our paraments in the chancel are still white, and every now and then you’ll hear a random “Christ is Risen...He is risen indeed!” from the pastor. These are all meant to remind us that we are still joyfully celebrating Easter. I love the season of Eastertide as I am reminded how God remains faithful to us all, and that through the work of the Holy Spirit, we are called into the work that God con- tinues to do all around us and within us. The resurrection of Christ was not the end of the story, but just the beginning. With each new day, we have an opportunity to live out a part of that story. Last month, our church was contacted by the Presbytery of Detroit, inviting us to par- ticipate in a new study called “New Beginnings.” The cost of the study is normally $2,400, however, the Presbytery is waiving the cost for us. WHAT IS NEW BEGINNINGS: A way for congregations to envision a new future for their churches. It is both an assessment and a process: As an assessment, it provides congregations with information about their church and community, including a building inspection, a financial review, detailed de- mographic information and much more. As a process, it helps churches use that information to discern a new future story for the congregation. Future stories come in many forms, including mission redevelopment, reloca- tion, a full restart, or the possibility of leaving a legacy. HOW CAN YOU HELP?

ATTENTION PARENTS!! There will be a Sacraments workshop on Saturday, May 2nd from

10:00 a.m. - noon for you and your children.

Learn more about the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper through crafts and activities that will enforce what your children learn in church. Lunch will be served afterwards. Please contact Jo Morgan if you can attend.

On Wednesday, an assessor from the Presbyterian Church (USA) will be spending the day with us, touring our building, looking at our calendar, our finances, and our community. At the end of the day, the will be an opportunity for the congregation to gather to dialogue with the assessor. You are all invited to be part of this important con-versation. Please mark your calendars! The gathering will take place on Wednesday, May 20th from 7:00 p.m.—9:00 p.m. This one day assessment is only the first step of this study. A detailed report will compiled for us, and shared with the congregation through small group meetings. Even-tually, through much conversation, and even more prayer and study, we as a congrega-tion will have to make a decision on how we move forward as a church. Will we contin-ue on the same path that we are one, or will we see opportunities for new beginnings in the life of our church and our ministry in South Lyon. It is appropriate during this season of Eastertide that we would ask ourselves, what is our story and what does our story have the potential to become. I am hopeful that the New Beginnings project will help us better define our future as we continue to serve Christ in South Lyon. Each month I, or one of the elders, will provide an update on where we are in this study. For now, we will just focus on our assessment on May 20th. I hope to see all of you at the congregational gathering on that day. Please, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

With Peace and Grace,

Pastor Mike

FUNDRAISER MEAL

TUESDAY, MAY 5th

5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Be sure to join us at Aubree’s of South Lyon on Tuesday, May 5th. Aubree’s has agreed to host a fund raiser meal on behalf of our Legacy Initiative to restore the foundations of our church building.

The salad and pizza buffet will be available for $15.00 per person, and Aubree’s will donate back to the church $5.00 per person. There is no limit on people so be sure to invite your friends and family. The more people we invite, the more money we will make for our building; but more importantly, the more fun we will have in fellowship together.

Some have asked if they have to order the buf-fet, or can they order off the menu. Of course you can order whatever you want, however, the church will only receive donations from the buffet.

Also, the Horlocker family has offered to match the donations received from Aubree’s up to $300.00. If anyone else would like to match the donations up to a certain amount, please contact Pastor Mike.

ALL CHURCH WORKDAY Join us on Saturday, May 2nd from 9:00 a.m. - noon, for an All Church Workday. Help us tidy up the

exterior of our building and spruce up the grounds as we prepare for the beautiful spring and summer months ahead. If you can’t make it for the

entire three hours, please come and

spend as much time as you are able. It will be greatly appreciated.

ATTENTION ALL

It’s a great day of fun and fellowship. The cost is still only $30 and all profits go to provide camperships to the Howell Con-ference and Nature Center for at risk area youth. A sign up sheet is located near the parlor or call Gwyn McClintock at 810-599-7133 or Kathy Schultz at 734-449-2938.

PENTECOST OFFERING

On Pentecost (Sunday 24 May), we collect a special offering. Instead of using the General Assembly's materials and sending the money to Presbytery, we have designed our own emblem and retain the money at the congregation level. But (and this is an important but) we use the money donated in the same way: to reach youth in the community. We provide opportunities to three youth that they are able to attend camp. Currently our goal is to send 3 young people at a cost of $370 each. Hopefully, we may be able to send more through your generosity. Thank you.

ATTENTION WOMEN…. YOU’RE INVITED!!!

You are all invited to a Stella and Dot jew-elry show at the church on Friday, May 15th at 7:00 p.m. Purchase jewelry for yourself or as a gift, but either way, the proceeds will be donated to the Second Mile Center of Detroit. Invite your friends and family. It will be a fun evening wheth-er you purchase anything or not. Stephanie Horlocker will be your hostess for the evening. Be sure to sign-up at the Friend-ship table, or contact the church office.

ACTIVE FAITH NEEDS YOUR

HELP! Active Faith is in need of bath size tow-els to distribute to families in need. Cur-rently, there is only enough to give one per family regardless of the size of fami-ly. With more towels, Active Faith could provide one per person. If you would like to help, please bring new bath size towels (not hand towels) to the office and we will deliver them to Active Faith on be-half of the church.

THE GREAT TOMATO

GIVE AWAY On Sunday, May 17th, the Great Tomato Give Away begins! Be sure to pick up as many plants as you would like but remem-ber, the fruit is to be donated back to the church. Last year, our tomatoes were used to make sauce for our winter E1E meals.

Your invited to join us on Sunday, May 31st for a POTLUCK

luncheon following worship!

WORSHIP LEADER CLASS—SUNDAY, JUNE 7th

Liturgy in the church is a foretaste of the eternal song of praise, an earthly expression

of that which is the content of eternity and the basic melody of creation, a never ending

thanksgiving to the Creator and Father of all things. ~ Bo Giertz Did you know that one of the ways you can serve the church is to sign up as a liturgist/worship leader? Anyone can assist in leading worship, after all, worship is the work of the people. Join our Pastoral Assistant, Ruth Azar, as she leads a class in leading wor-ship on Sunday, June 7th, following worship in the library.

News… for and about South Lyon Presbyterian Women

May will find us winding down some activities as we progress into our

summer schedule.

The Women’s Bible Study has finished their study on Esther and will resume in the fall with a new study that will meet at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday in the parlor.

In this study for PW 2015-2016, we consider the waters of chaos in Genesis, the River of Life in the last chapter of Revelation and many other aspects of “water.” Watch for start up date in the August newsletter and more about this intriguing study. Cost for materials is $8.00 and there is a sign up sheet on the Fellowship Table. The Circle of Hope will meet the 2nd Wednesday, May 13 at 12:15 p.m. for their last regular meeting. Joyce Johnson will be our hostess and provide a dessert, bring a sandwich to share. Dorothy Esbrook will lead the discussion from the Mission Yearbook of Prayer and Mary Lloyd will tell us about another woman from the Bible. Roll call will be a Bible verse on “Love.” Our final get together for the year will be a lunch out in June with location to be announced. All women of FPCSL are invited to join us anytime to get to know us.

All Presbyterian Women are encouraged to wear orange on the 25th of every

month! The national committee of Presbyterian Women working for Justice &

Peace are making this call for us to wear orange on the 25th of each month as a way

to call attention to violence against women. Check out the website http://

endviolence.un.org for more information.

Presbyterian Women have been giving generously for more than 200 years. Through Celebration Giving, Presbyterian women continue that tradition by highlighting three different offerings, one is:

…….. Birthday Offering a PW offering collected in the spring of each year to celebrate the blessings in the lives of Presbyterian Women. The offering funds up to 5 projects that are not included in ongoing GA mission support. If you would like to contribute to this special Birthday offering, see Nancy Geiger, our SLPW Treasurer. Goal for the 2015 Birthday Offering is $500,000! (article continues on next page)

Spring has come and gone and is now back again. The grass is green and growing, the trees are starting to leaf and Spring bulbs are showing off their pretty colors. There is no feeling quite like the renewal of life the warmer temperatures bring. It is incredible to see all the beauty God has created and I truly enjoy it’s reappearance each Spring. We should all make time each day to enjoy the masterpiece that lies right outside our doors. It’s time to reconnect with neighbors and friends who have been hibernating too. Check in on those you haven’t seen or heard from for some time. Please let the deacons know of any prayers or special needs some or our friends may need.

~ Stephanie Horlocker

Our mission project continues at a fast pace, thanks to our Mission Coordinator, Gwyn McClintock and the sewing enthusiasts . Kits are available after Worship on most Sundays or see Gwyn. Pictures of some of the recipients are on the PW bulletin board. A very special “Thank You” to all of the women who attended our Tea in April. Thanks to Gary Cooper, Ron McClintock and Pastor Mike that took down, set up and replaced all the furniture that transformed our parlor into such a special place for our “Tea.” Everyone had a wonderful time and enjoyed the program presented by Nancy Geiger on aprons. The examples of the different styles from 1920 to now was interesting to see and our special guests, PWPD Moderator, Joan Lockard and Cluster Leader, Marian West were fun to meet as they joined us for the afternoon. A wonderful handout was given at the end that said: “Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool; her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.” Isn’t it

great being a SL Presbyterian Woman

as we enjoy our journey together with

God at the center!

It’s that time of year again . . . time for

the Lake Street Cruise-In

to come ROARING into town!!!

The “Lake Street Cruise In” is back this summer. Join us on Wednesday, May 27th from 6:30 p.m.– 9:00 p.m., and then every fourth Wednesday through September. Once again, we will be providing hot dogs, popcorn, and water to guests that stop by the church. We also like to provide something “sweet” so if you’d like to donate a batch of brownies or two, please contact Donna Rae. We hope you will come out and experience the great cars, the “oldies but goodies” music, and wonderful friends. See you at the cruise!

EVERYONE EATS

THANKS YOU! A great big THANK YOU to all the cookie providers! These delicious bakers have prepared 25 dozen cookies each month to complement the hot meals provided to 120 guests at Spirit of Hope Church in Detroit. Before the weather gets too warm to bake cookies, consider whipping up a batch or two and freezing them, labeled and dated. Consult the monthly (orange) sign-up sheet on the Friendship Table before thawing the cookies so that we do not waste your efforts. Before 1 September, the E1E team will need 125 dozen cookies, that is one thousand five hundred tasty treats. (In July we have both the third and fifth Wednesday.
