Thus, the “kirking” of a tartan is the bringing of that tartan to church, along with the family it represents, to receive the blessing of God. The service had its beginning during the early years of World War II, when the Rev. Peter Marshall, a native Scot and pastor of the New York Avenue Presby- terian Church in Washington, D.C., drew upon his heritage to support the British war effort. For Presbyterians today, the service is a celebration not only of our church’s roots in the Scottish Reformation, but also of the gospel call to reach out to all the families of the world, in all their rich diversity. We are grateful to Muriel Pearson for organizing our Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan for the past twenty-nine years and to the many members and friends of this congregation who have provided the tartans used in today’s service. The pulpit and lectern paraments and stoles for the pastors are in the Clergy (ancient) tartan, given to the glory of God and in memory of Lucy Pearson Smith and Marlton Cremore Pear- son. The Port City Pipes and Drums was founded in 1993 by Pipe Major Andrew Simpson, a native Scot. They have participated in our Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan since its inception. The Port City Pipes and Drums are a non-profit organization and play various events through- out the year. WE RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD

+HYMN 687 “Our God, our Help in Ages Past” ST. ANNE +AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (from the Scots Confession of 1560, alt)

As we believe in one God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, so we firmly believe that from the beginning there has been, now is, and to the end of the world shall be, one Kirk, that is to say, one company and multitude chosen by God, who rightly worship and embrace him by true faith in Christ Jesus, who is the only Head of the Kirk, even as it is the body and spouse of Christ Jesus. This Kirk is catholic, that is, universal, because it contains the chosen of all ages, of all realms, nations, and tongues, be they of the Jews or be they of the Gentiles, who have communion and society with God the Father, and with his Son, Christ Jesus, through the sanctification of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE OFFERING

CALL TO CONFESSION

Brothers and Sisters, why do we confess our sin? Because all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God. But why do we do it together? Because we are a community, a covenant people.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Eternal God, in every age you have raised up men and women to live and die in faith. We confess that we have been indifferent to your will. You call us to proclaim your name, but we are silent. You call us to do what is just, but we remain idle. You call us to live faithfully, but we are afraid. In your mercy, forgive us. Give us courage to follow in your way, so that joined with those from ages past who have served you with faith, hope, and love, we may inherit the kingdom you have promised to your children… SILENT PRAYER KYRIE MERBECKE Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON (adapted from A Wee Worship Book, Iona Community, Glasgow, Scotland)

Is it true that God loves the world? Amen. This is true. Is it true that God loves all people? Amen. This is true. Is it true that Jesus came to make all things new? Amen! This is true! Then let us believe this good news: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

+GLORIA PATRI (581) GREATOREX Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, World without end. Amen, Amen.

PASSING OF THE PEACE

The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all! And also with you!

OFFERATORY ANTHEM (11:00)

Amen.

+DOXOLOGY (606) OLD HUNDREDTH
