This summer you have had the opportunity to pick the sermon topics.

Preach It! has been a lot of fun and it has generated many positive

comments. Each week I have taken from the Preach It! jar one of your topic

ideas for Sunday’s sermon. The result? The preaching has, hopefully, been

more relevant to your life. So often the preacher is left to wonder and

anticipate what you as the listener may want or need to hear. This takes the

wondering out of it. I love your ideas for sermons and I want to thank

everyone who has participated.

Frankly, I like this so much I plan to keep the Preach It! jar in the Friendship

Area for awhile. If you have an idea put it in the jar. I will keep checking it.

One topic idea I received from two people is the Beatitudes. This fall I will be

doing a 9 week series on that topic. And I hope to have a few surprises

Presbyterian Women resume meeting at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 3rd at the church.

The Hostess will be Ruth Liscum. Shirley Rozendaal will introduce the new study, “An Abiding

Hope” The Presence of God in Exodus and Deuteronomy. Books are still available.

The Fall gathering will be in Bettendorf on Saturday, October 5, 2013.

Quilting Sessions for the next couple of months will be September 10th, 24th and October 8th,

22nd from 9:00 a.m. until noon. Any woman is welcome even if you’ve never picked up a thread.

SUNDAY SCHOOL BEGINS ON

SEPTEMBER 8TH at 9:00 a.m.

K-6th Large Group - Kids will be guided

through the Bible using skits, experiences,

object lessons, activities, singing, and

praying together.

We will have games, a bouncy castle and fun for the whole church family immediately following

worship that day. Lunch is provided! Bring your lawn chairs and/or blankets.

Youth & Adults will take an intergenerational journey

through the Bible.

Using the HISTORY Channel’s “The Bible” series, we will study Bible

stories from Genesis to Revelation. The video will help us visualize the

story as we talk about God’s activity in human history and in our lives

today. Join us Sundays at 9:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Area for

discussions and insights as we grow our faith.

Nursery is available during this time.

Synod School 2013 By Mary Klotzbach

Over 600 people, mostly from the Midwest, celebrated the 60th Anniversary of Synod School at Buena Vista College in

Storm Lake. It was heartwarming to be with my family, Jeff, Sarah, and Erin Dickinson and to visit with families that I

had met in the past forty years when our whole family enjoyed the week together. I was privileged to travel there with

Kathleen Sheets who is the new pastor in Jesup. And we had a good visit with B.J. Ukena, our former pastor.

There were over sixty-five workshops offered and I enjoyed four- Mennonite and Amish differences, from Dan to

Beershebe (How geography shaped our Biblical faith), Mr. Rogers (make Believe and Neighborliness), and the

Horizons bible study. I also attended a mini course. It was a documentary film about the three hundred mile horse-

back trip from South Dakota to Mankato, Minnesota by native Americans to commemorate and bring healing to the

tragic event in their history when scores of their ancestors were hanged by decree from the U.S. government. The

most recent trip was made in blizzard conditions. The Mayor of Mankato arranged a community event for the

residents to welcome and participate in a time of forgiveness and healing.

Mornings began with a delicious breakfast from the Food Servery, followed by a convocation at the Chapel with news

of the day, a children’s sermon by Laura Loving, and our convocation speaker, Claudio Carvalhaes, a native of Brazil

who is a Presbyterian pastor teaching courses in a Lutheran seminary. He was a dynamic speaker and used the

theme, “We Belong to God” in his message and music.

Evening worship was time of inspiration led by Rev. Sam Massey and Darlene Bergman of First Church, Iowa City.

Enjoyed the choir and musical instruments…

There were many special classes and activities for the children who were lovingly cared for by adult teachers and

young counselors from Camp Clearwater Forest in Minnesota. The range in ages at Synod was from babes in arms to

grey hairs like me. There was time for rest, wading in the lake, singing with guitars in the Coffee House, browsing in

the book store, etc. Keep next year in mind for a week of fun and inspiration!

2) I’ll always choose vanilla - I don’t like chocolate.

3) My favorite food is spaghetti.

4) I’m an obsessed card player.

5) You’ll never catch me sleeping in public or on any public

transportation.

6) My favorite books are the Twilight series.

7) I hate the heat! (Put me in a parka any day.)

8) Golf is my favorite sport to watch.

9) I’m not a fan of pets.

10) If I had a choice where to live, I would move to Italy.

11) Duck Dynasty and NCIS are my favorite TV shows.

12) I met my husband in England.

13) Both the dentist and public speaking cause me the biggest anxiety.

14) “The King & I” and “P.S. I Love You” are my favorite movies.

15) I don’t dance… (At least not in public!)

The Summer went by quickly but was filled with some very enjoyable times spent together. Our most excellent adventure was the Mission trip to Nashville. Our youth did such an amazing job with the refugee kids at the apartment complex! They played games, made crafts, gave piggy back rides and left a little piece of their hearts with the children they encountered. We all found it hard to say good bye. Thank you Melody for being my side kick and thank you to all who helped make the trip possible.

Our second adventure was a road trip to Des Moines to see Tim Hawkins a Christian comedian. What a funny, funny guy! If you ever get the chance to see him, you won’t be disappointed.

We have a wonderful group of young people and it is a joy to be with them! Kathy Eilers
