VIEW FROM THE PULPIT - IT IS POSSIBLE you have heard the report of a devastating fire that de-stroyed the First Presbyterian Church building in Girard PA (Erie County, Lake Erie Presbytery PCUSA), in the early morning hours of July 22. The pastor at FirstPres, Girard, is a colleague and a friend.

The congregation at FirstPres, Girard, gathered for worship Sunday, July 22, at the Lake City Presby-terian Church, a few hours after the fire. The congregation assembled to pray in the church parking lot Tuesday, July 24. Girard Church Session met Thursday, July 26, to begin to address the many and difficult issues before them.

I mention any of this to you who read this brief newsletter entry so I can also share with you a por-tion of the note the Stated Clerk of Lake Erie Presbytery—also a colleague and friend—sent to the Girard congregation hours following the fire:

‘Undoubtedly, there will be news reports announcing “the Girard Church has been destroyed by fire.” Without minimizing in any way the significance and long-range impact of your tragedy, should those words be used, they will not be telling the true story.’

‘To be certain, the building that housed the gathering of the Girard Presbyterian Church has burned. But no, the Girard Church is not destroyed! The Girard Church—made of its people and its minis-tries—is NOT destroyed.’

What a sobering - and important - reminder for all of us. DAD

LEADERSHIP AT SENECA HILLS BIBLE CAMP AND RETREAT CENTER, 276 Damascus Rd., Polk, PA, has invited all interested men to a barbeque at the Camp -Friday, August 17, 6:00 PM until 8:30 PM- for a good dinner and great speaker. There is a plan for a gathering from FirstPres to attend. Please indicate your interest by calling the church office. ‘Seneca Hills exists to lead people, especially youth, to a vital personal relationship with Jesus Christ and a life of dedicated service to Him’

Visit From North Presbyterian Church Sunday, September 16, 2018 our church will once again host North Presbyterian from Cleveland, Ohio. This is the same church our youth visited in July to prepare and serve a meal for their congregation. On this day, members from North Presbyterian Church will worship with us. Following our morning worship service there will be an all-church tureen lunch with our guests from North Presbyterian Church. Following lunch, our guests will travel to the Oswald Farm to enjoy some outside time in the country. Please mark your calendar for this special day to share with our friends from Cleveland. The members of this church always look forward to visiting with us.
