THE LORD’S DAY

AUGUST 23, 2020 10:00 AM PRELUDE – Coronet Voluntary..……………………..Anonymous (18th century)

GREETING

One Voice: May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all! All Voices: And also with you! ANNOUNCEMENTS

GOD DRAWS US TO HIMSELF

*RESPONSIVE CALL TO WORSHIP – Psalm 1 One Voice: Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, or stand in the way of sinners, or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his

law, he mediates day and night. All Voices: He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields

its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.

One Voice: It is not so with the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore, the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

All Voices: For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

*CONVENING PRAYER

CALL TO CONFESSION UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION – Psalms 51:1-6, 10-12, 15-17 with ‘Trisagion’ (from the early church) – ‘three times holy’

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you and you alone have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are justified in your sentence and blameless when you pass judgment. You desire truth in the inward being, therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me. Holy God, holy and mighty, holy immortal One – have mercy on me!

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

ANTHEM – “And When We Said Goodbye”……………………...by Jeff Hughes For the Glory of God and in loving memory of Margaret Hughes

GOD SPEAKS TO US THROUGH HIS WORD

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION……….…………………………..Elder Jim Miller HOLY SCRIPTURE Old Testament – Deuteronomy 15:1-11 1 "At the end of every seven years you shall grant a release. 2 And this is the manner of the release: every creditor shall release what he has lent to his neighbor; he shall not exact it of his neighbor, his brother, because the LORD's release has been proclaimed. 3 Of a foreigner you may exact it; but whatever of yours is with your brother your hand shall release. 4 But there will be no poor among you (for the LORD will bless you in the land which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance to possess), 5 if only you will obey the voice of the LORD your God, being careful to do all this commandment which I command you this day. 6 For the LORD your God will bless you, as he promised you, and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow; and you shall rule over many nations, but they shall not rule over you. 7 "If there is among you a poor man, one of your brethren, in any of your towns within your land which the LORD your God gives you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, 8 but you shall open your hand to him, and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be. 9 Take heed lest there be a base thought in your heart, and you say, `The seventh year, the year of release is near,' and your eye be hostile to your poor brother, and you give him nothing, and he cry to the LORD against you, and it be sin in you. 10 You shall give to him freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him; because for this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake. 11 For the poor will never cease out of the land; therefore I command you, You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in the land.

*PREACHING TEXT

Luke 16:19-31

19 "There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate lay a poor man named Laz'arus, full of sores, 21 who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; 23 and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Laz'arus in his bosom. 24 And he called out, `Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Laz'arus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.' 25 But Abraham said, `Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Laz'arus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.' 27 And he said, `Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house, 28 for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.' 29 But Abraham said, `They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.' 30 And he said, `No, father Abraham; but if some one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' 31He said to him, `If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.'" One Voice: The word of the Lord! All Voices: Thanks be to God! SERMON –‘An Awful Story’…..………………………………………David Dobi
