†THE RESPONSE OF GOD'S PEOPLE†

CHRISTMAS EVE OFFERING: Family Promise, a helping ministry for homeless families. OFFERTORY ANTHEM What Sweeter Music John Rutter

What sweeter music can we bring, than a carol, for to sing the birth of this our heavenly King?

Awake the voice! Awake the string! Dark and dull night, fly hence away,

and give the honour to this day that sees December turned to May.

Why does the chilling winter’s morn smile, like a field beset with corn?

Or smell like a meadow newly-shorn thus, on the sudden? Come and see the cause, why things thus fragrant be:

‘Tis he is born, whose quickening birth gives life and lustre, public mirth, to heaven, and the under-earth.

We see him come, and know him ours, who, with his sunshine and his showers, turns all the patient ground to flowers.

The darling of the world is come, and fit it is, we find a room to welcome him, to welcome him.

The nobler part, of all the house here, is the heart, which we will give him;

and bequeath this holly, and this ivy wreath, to do him honour; who’s our King, and Lord of all this reveling.

What sweeter music can we bring, than a carol, for to sing the birth of this our heavenly King?

Robert Herrick (1591-1675)

THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION

INVITATION TO THE LORD'S TABLE & PRAYER OF DEDICATION

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE Come forward down the center-aisle. The center bread station will be gluten-free. The two outside bread stations will be regular

bread. Once you have received the bread, move to one of the cup stations, dip the bread, partake, and then return to your pew by the outside aisle. If coming forward is not physically appropriate for you, please signal to the pastors who will walk down the center aisle following the communion service to the choir. You will be served in your pew.

Receiving the Elements: Many find that placing one palm in the other, forming a cross, is a meaningful way to receive the bread. Also, many find the oral response of “Amen” is a meaningful way to respond to the pastor’s offer of the bread, “This is the body of Christ,” and to elder’s offer of the cup, “This is the blood of Christ.”
