Volume 8 Issue 5 May 2017 FIRST NEWS First United Methodist Church Page 1 If you are over the age of 40 and have watched almost any prime time TV show, it might strike you that some of the subject matter is quite a bit different than it used to be. Conversations about intimate sub- jects are discussed and dwelled upon in the most exploited and gratuitous ways. Terrible stories and images from real life news are commented on and repeated frequently almost constantly sandwiched in between the prime time soap operas and comedies. References to Christiani- ty, church, and religion in general often have an element of skepticism or downright ridicule. Bishop Bob Farr reminds us that we are in a new worldas Disciples of Christ. We are in a world where people dont trust the church. People dont know much about Jesus. And as believers, we wonder if anyone is interested in knowing. That said, a recent Gallup poll reported that 92 per- cent of Americans believe there is a God. They want to read the Bible. They want to be spiritual. They like Jesus. But they dont like the church in its cur- rent condition. As Gods Church, we have work to do. I dont believe that it is up to us to necessarily change our traditions and culture to reflect the moral lifestyle that we see on TV, but we must be aware that much of our society thinks quite a bit differently than most of us, about ideas that many of us grew up with. Therefore, if we truly want people to experience God in their lives, we are going to have to find things that we have in common with people who think they dont have anything in common with us. We must study and think about these things. In the next few weeks, the Worship Study Group of FUMC will take a look at the worship opportunities available in our church. Not only will we look at the music, liturgy, preaching and prayer times on Sunday morning, but at the other worship opportunities in our church during the week. Please be in prayer for this dedicated group of servant leaders, as they begin their work later this month. The team chosen by the Lay Leadership Committee include: Pastors Tina and Laird (non-voting), John Fuss, Michelle Olson, Amy Johns, Katie Roehlk, Arlene Veitch, Rob Coon, Tamara Fresquez, Janene Halder- man, Patty Swenson, Patsy Miller, Cassie Holloway, Melissa Seeley, and Zel- ma Wilcox. If you are over the age of 40 and have watched

almost any prime time TV show, it might strike you

that some of the subject matter is quite a bit different

than it used to be. Conversations about intimate sub-

jects are discussed and dwelled upon in the most

exploited and gratuitous ways. Terrible stories and

images from real life news are commented on and

repeated frequently almost constantly sandwiched in

between the prime time soap operas and comedies. References to Christiani-

ty, church, and religion in general often have an element of skepticism or

downright ridicule. Bishop Bob Farr reminds us that we are in a “new world”

as Disciples of Christ. We are in a world where people don’t trust the church.

People don’t know much about Jesus. And as believers, we wonder if anyone

is interested in knowing. That said, a recent Gallup poll reported that 92 per-

cent of Americans believe there is a God. They want to read the Bible. They

want to be spiritual. They like Jesus. But they don’t like the church in its cur-

rent condition. As God’s Church, we have work to do. I don’t believe that it is

up to us to necessarily change our traditions and culture to reflect the moral

lifestyle that we see on TV, but we must be aware that much of our society

thinks quite a bit differently than most of us, about ideas that many of us grew

up with. Therefore, if we truly want people to experience God in their lives,

we are going to have to find things that we have in common with people who

think they don’t have anything in common with us. We must study and think

about these things.

In the next few weeks, the Worship Study Group of FUMC will take a

look at the worship opportunities available in our church. Not only will we look

at the music, liturgy, preaching and prayer times on Sunday morning, but at

the other worship opportunities in our church during the week. Please be in

prayer for this dedicated group of servant leaders, as they begin their work

Mysterious ways Before pursuing a career as a Christian singer, Ryan Stevenson was a paramedic, encountering trauma and “true brokenness.” When he re-ceived a 911 call about a woman struck by lightning, Stevenson didn’t think she’d survive. But thanks in part to his efforts, the woman made a full recovery — and later struck up a friendship with him. One day the woman asked Stevenson, “If you could be doing anything with your life, what would it be?” His answer? Music. She gave him a check for $2,000, and he used it to cut an EP, which led to a record deal. Through Stevenson’s chart-topping song “Eye of the Storm,” he wants to remind listeners that God “hasn’t forgotten about us. He’s still paying attention to us no matter how horrible things might seem. He’s in control.”

First of all, thanks to our congregation, your contributions have started the ball rolling on a number of much needed repairs. Here’s What’s Happening - Repair of the East Wall in Fellowship Hall: If you are not aware, we are having problems with the east wall of Fellowship Hall. For what-ever reason (probably water and/or tree roots) the wall

footings have shifted (sunk) causing the wall to move at the ceiling, about 3 inches. An engineering firm provided a detailed solution and a general con-tractor has been hired to accomplish the necessary repairs. The contractor is waiting for materials to begin the project. After completion, the engineer-ing firm told us to wait at least six months before proceeding with a flooring solution.

Next, we will address plumbing upgrades (fixtures, etc.) that have been put off for lack of funds.

To keep you informed, following is a list of facility projects that are either underway or pending:

Sprinkler system repair Playground fence repair Emergency light restoration Precision Air, replacement parts Architectural plans for offices and courtyard Courtyard bench refinishing Fellowship Hall wall repair Fellowship Hall floor replacement The “Judgement” painting repair in Narthex Install new basketball goal in playground area

Progress will now be reported on a recurring basis. Questions:? Call the church office and talk to Pastor Laird or Don Armstrong.
