First Evangelical Lutheran Church – Glencoe, MN June 2018 Church Newsletter Sharing Christ Changing Lives”“ Summertime! A Time to Rest and Relax! It’s here! It’s finally here! After a long winter and an April blizzard like no other April blizzard we’ve ever seen, summertime is finally here! For lots of Minnesotans, summer is a favorite time for rest and relaxation. Whether it’s taking a road-trip, going camping, spending time at the cabin, or enjoying an evening in the backyard over a delicious grilled meal, summer is definitely an ideal time for rest and relaxation amidst all the work that we have to do all throughout the year. God knows that we need rest, both physical and spiritual rest. In the Old Testament book of Exodus God says, “Six days you shall do your work, but on the seventh day you shall rest; that (you) … may be refreshed” (Ex. 23:12, ESV). Our Lord Jesus came as the fulfillment of the Law, so we are no longer required by God to refrain from all physical labor on the seventh day of the week. Nevertheless, God does command us to take time for spiritual rest. Our Sabbath day of worship provides us this spiritual rest that is vital for our faith in Christ to remain strong. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus gives us this command and invitation: “28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Mt 11:28-30).We certainly need physical rest from the burden of our labors, but most importantly, we need spiritual rest from the burden of our sins. This summer be sure to make time to get together with your fellow Christians in public worship, whether you’re at home or away. God is present for you in His Word that is proclaimed and in His Sacraments that are administered. Through these Means of Grace, God keeps our faith in Him strong by giving to us His gifts and blessings, especially the forgiveness of sins that Christ died and rose to give to us. God’s blessings to you! Have a restful summer! ~In Christ, Pastor Dan Welch SUNDAY MORNING VIDEO BIBLE STUDY Our topic is: The Great Deceiver Satan very much wants to steal, kill, and destroy. Celebrating Life and Parenthood

On May 11, Melissa and I celebrated our son Henry’s first birthday. Although we never heard him cry, we are thankful that God brought him to us. Henry has certainly touched many lives, even though he was a stillborn. So, on his first birthday, we celebrated his life at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Des Peres, Missouri with family and friends. We sang hymns and ate cake from my favorite St. Louis grocery store – Dierberg’s. The cake read: “Henry, you are forever in our hearts!” and it had a Mario Kart theme. (My favorite video game is Mario Kart 64.) For families who have lost a child – via miscarriage or stillbirth – that child is never forgotten. We may try to forget or move on, but those are great memories to be cherished, since God knew that child in the womb. For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. (Psalm 139:13-16)

God is always comforting. He knew us before anyone noticed us. He knew us before that first pregnancy test. From that moment of conception, God was already there watching over every baby. Sadly, not every baby is able to breathe their first breath, but we know that faith comes by hearing God’s Word (Romans 10:17) – so the good news is that God welcomes all the faithful into his arms in heaven. The following day, we drove to Kokomo, Indiana. Some months ago, Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer (where I previously had membership) contacted me about preaching sometime in 2018 for this was their centennial year. As a “son of the congregation,” I was honored to be asked to preach. I used to think the sanctuary and nave of Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer was huge, but after being called to First Lutheran Church, it now appears small. It’s all about perspective, I guess. I was honored to preach God’s Word for their 100th anniversary celebration and to preach it on Mother’s Day. Those few days in St. Louis and Kokomo were great times with family and friends – from celebrating Henry’s life to seeing familiar faces in Kokomo – but it is also great knowing that we are making new memories here in Glencoe. Happy belated Mother’s Day and a happy Father’s Day to all parents here at First Lutheran Church!

You would think since the school year is coming to an end, that we all would be less busy right?! Wrong, just as school ends we still have full schedules with sports, camping, fishing, and vacations. We are people that just like to keep going. I would encourage you as you're continuing to go go go this summer that you take advantage of your Sundays that provide rest in God's Word through Worship! There are still Bible studies that we will have for adults, and youth. I.M.P.A.C.T. will take a short break in June as we get prepared to go on the youth mission trip to Idaho. In July, we will be looking into a book called, "Can I ask that 2". The high schoolers have the opportunity to wrestle with, and discuss some questions that we all might be having regarding our faith life. Tweens will begin on June 19th from 9:15-11am! I’m looking forward to the summer adventures we will have with that group. Sunday school has ended and will resume in September. Don't forget to sign up for VBS this summer by going online or grabbing a form at church. The dates for VBS are July 29th-Aug 2nd. As always, please keep the youth of our congregation in your prayers. We hope that everything they experience here is a

chance for their faith to grow.

Blessings ~ Tori Kidd

Lutheran Women’s Missionary League June Salad Supper – WASHED CLEAN!

Monday, June 4th, 2018 | 6:30 PM | Fellowship Center It’s that cleaning time of year! You’ve probably cleaned out your flower beds and garden. Have you washed your windows yet? How about the garage? The theme of the annual Ladies Salad Supper hosted by the LWML is WASHED CLEAN! We’re NOT going to talk about Spring house cleaning and how good it feels to get all of those chores done. We ARE going to talk about how we have already been washed by the blood of Jesus. In our Baptism He has washed away our sins and has let His children come into His safe keeping now and forever. All ladies of the congregation are welcomed. We will especially honor all the volunteers who help serve funerals and who helped at the April Mission event “Muslims Need Jesus.” We’ll start promptly at 6:30 p.m. with a buffet salad supper. Several students of First Ev. Lutheran School will entertain us with their instrumental, vocal and speaking talents. Pastor Welch will lead a short Bible Study on the cleansing power of Baptism. We’ll end with a closing devotion.

If you do not normally participate in these events, a reply to the church office is appreciated but not mandatory. (We want to be sure and set a place for you!) Feel free to bring a friend.

Happy June birthday to LWML honorary member LaVerna Mackenthun. A $5 gift to LWML Mission Grants “mites” has been given in your honor.

Minnesota South District LWML Convention “GRACE ABOVE ALL” | June 29-30, 2018

Verizon Center, Mankato MN “But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:10a). Several members of First Ev. Lutheran will be attending the District LWML convention June 29-30. Helen Becker and Joyce Schiroo are our voting delegates. They are prayerfully studying the Mission Grant proposals and the mission grant monetary goal. They along with other voters will select the projects and dollar amount for the next biennium. Melissa Adelsen has been selected to represent the McLeod Zone LWML as our “Young Woman Representative.” She, along with other young women, will learn the in’s and outs of LWML, what a wonderful mission organization it is and how it serves and inspires missions and missionaries in America and all over the world. Glenda Schuft, as out-going president of the McLeod Zone and member of the District Board, will vote. She will also carry the McLeod Zone banner made by Madrienne Weber and Linda Duenow. Other members of First Ev. will be attending as guests. They will hear inspiring mission speakers. The theme of the three Bible studies is “Grace-Full Living.” Word of Grace – God’s Gifts in Preaching and Absolution; Water of Grace – God’s Gifts in Baptism; Table of Grace – God’s Gifts in the Lord’s Supper. You don’t have to be a member of LWML to attend the Convention. Anyone may register as a guest. Go to www.mnslwml.org for more information.

Gifts from the Heart The “Human Care” committee of the Minnesota South District LWML is receiving Baby Kits and Hospice Kits to be collected at the District Convention. You may wish to make a kit and ask one of our LWML members to bring it to convention. The kits will be distributed to pregnancy and family service organizations in the Rochester, Winona and Red Wing areas. Go to www.mnslwml.org for exact directions on how to assemble a kit.

A Lost Kitchen Stool A tall stool is missing from the church kitchen. It is round with a black vinyl seat. It is used by helpers who need to sit while preparing food for funerals or other events. If you have removed it, or if you are

temporarily using it in another part of the church building, please return it. It is missed!

Stories of Faith

The Public Relations (PR) Team has invited members to share their stories related to situations or events in which they experienced God’s love and providential care. If you are willing to share a “story of faith,” contact the church office or a PR Team member. If you have a story, but would like help putting it on paper, please contact us, as we’ll be happy to assist! Cindy Eggersgluess 238-2148 [email protected] Jeri Ring 864-4029 [email protected] Lynn Exsted 864-6452 [email protected] Since June is my daughter’s birthday month and because in Pastor Welch’s recent Bible Study we learned how the Holy Spirit can intercede in our prayers, I want to share my story. In June of 1978, we had a daughter who was born 16 weeks early. She was 1lb 8oz and 12 inches long. We baptized her as soon as we could and named her Amanda Hope. For those of you who don’t know how developed a baby is at that stage of gestation, she had a full head of long black hair and perfect tiny little finger and toenails. Because fat is one of the last things to develop on a baby, she had no fat. You could see her veins through her porcelain-like skin. Her whole body was covered with a fine blond hair and her eyes were closed like new puppies or kittens. She was amazingly beautiful. Not only was she almost fully developed, she had the feistiest personality you can imagine. Because she always had a respirator, we did not hear her cry; but we knew she cried. She’d get angry with the nurses when she had enough of being poked and prodded. She was always in an incubator, so we held her and tried to bond with her through the openings in the sides. These openings were sleeve shaped holes; so when you pushed your hands through, it would cover the sleeves of your clothes so you wouldn’t introduce bacteria, etc. We only felt her with our hands……I remember praying that I could hold her to my chest and feel my arms around her. We would stroke her and try to comfort her. The nurses would also use these openings to care for her. Those nurses told us, that in their experience, premature babies with her personality had the best chances of making it home. One thing that doesn’t develop until later in gestation is a valve within the heart. Amanda was born with a valve problem that didn’t allow the blood to route properly through the heart. When she was about 10 days old, she underwent open-heart surgery. She made it through with flying colors, because of that

personality. Other things were against her though; one was the fact that she had to be given high oxygen levels through her ventilator. We were told that, if she made it, she would most likely be blind. We were 23 years old (I was 3 weeks from being 23). We were young, scared, and had no resources but to pray. I went to sleep praying, I woke up praying… I can’t remember a moment that wasn’t in prayer or that wasn’t offered to God as a prayer. I prayed that she would be ok and we could bring her home. The idealistic 22 year old in me prayed that there would be some miracle that she would be well and come home. Then one day I had one of those V8, forehead smacking, moments when the Holy Spirit opened my eyes… wide. The Holy Spirit was telling me “wake up, this isn’t your call”! I immediately started praying that I would be able to manage whatever it was that God willed for Amanda and our family. It would be God’s will and plan for us. I prayed that I could live with His decisions. Amanda died on July 17, 1978, the day after my 23rd birthday. Because of the Holy Spirit’s intervention, I was able to accept God’s will and find the “silver lining”. I trust in Him. He will take care of me. My life was changed forever. Now, I listen for the Holy Spirit, in almost everything I do. I believe that, in the “intuitive” times that we moms have, this is the Holy Spirit guiding us. I also became an adamant prolife proponent. It is very clear to me that our children have their soul, spirit, and personality from the moment of conception. Happy 40th birthday Amanda!

Lutheran Hour Topics for June Each Sunday during June at 12:30 PM listen to the Lutheran Hour over radio station KDUZ 1260 AM. This month you will hear the following program topics: Jun 3 "The Battleground of Time" with Rev. Dr. Dale A. Meyer. Military personnel know what it means to be on the front line in combat. This message is about a battleground where we're between opposing forces and could easily lose our life, the Battleground of Time. (Deuteronomy 5:12-15; Mark 2:23-3:6) Jun 10 "A Light Momentary Affliction?" with Rev. Dr. Ken Klaus. Paul had his problems. You've never met anyone who didn't. And yet, Paul called his problems "light" and "momentary". Today's message deals with the question, 'What does Paul know that we don't?' (2 Corinthians 4:17-5:1) Jun 17 "Tell Me a Story!" with Rev. Dr. Dale A. Meyer. Jesus loves to tell us stories. In His stories about the normal things of life, Jesus teaches us about the reign of God in our lives. This Father's Day, what makes for a godly father, or mother or Christian? The willingness to tell our stories. (Mark 4:26-34) Jun 24 "Jesus, Don't You Care?" with Rev. Dr. Ken Klaus. After seeing one of the Savior's miracles the disciples asked, "Who is this Guy?" After Pentecost, they knew Who Jesus was and why He had come. Even so, the world keeps coming up with wrong answers when they ask, "Just Who is this Guy?" (Mark 4:38-41) We are looking for broadcast sponsors for July, August and for the remainder of 2018. Are you interested in helping support the Lutheran Hour broadcasts on KDUZ radio? You can sponsor a radio broadcast in memory of a loved one, or in honor of a family member or friend’s birthday or anniversary. Many broadcasts are sponsored by groups within LCMS congregations as service projects. Support by groups is very helpful to cover those Sundays not covered by individual sponsors. Unless otherwise requested, sponsors will be announced over KDUZ on the day of the broadcast. The cost to sponsor a broadcast is $94.00. For information about Sundays available for sponsorship call Chuck Jensen, 320-864-3579 or contact Rich Streufert, 1620 Knight Ave N, Glencoe, MN 55336, 320-864-6884 (e-mail [email protected]). Thank you for your support in helping spread the Gospel through these broadcasts.

First Lutheran School

Flames Flash ~ June 2018

Please Pray For:

● Those families that are considering sending their children to FLS that they might be led to realize the importance of a Christ centered education right here in Glencoe. ● All the people who are traveling this summer that they may reach their destinations safely.. ● The people in our area who are without a church home that they may be moved by the Holy Spirit to find a church that fulfills their spiritual needs and that we might be courageous enough to share God’s Word with them. ● Feed My Starving Children, our chapel offering recipients, as they work to help to feed hungry children around the world.

Thank You To:

● Mr. Dahl for his efforts in putting together another great Fine Arts Festival. ● Everyone who volunteered this year, whether for field trips, classroom activities, or other needs. We really appreciate it!! ● Debi Ramirez for her hard work in keeping track of our school and church’s finances. ● Brian Grochow for making the Fine Arts Festival more colorful by donating the tuxedo for Mr. Scheele to wear! ● Angie Grimm, Jonathan Pixler, Mrs. Bargmann, Mary Lemke, Lucy Terlinden, Cindy Mathews, Kim Rislund, Amy Welch, Rhonda Betcher, and Becky Edwards for chaperoning our servant event trip to Feed My Starving Children. Calendar Notes:

May 29-30 Faculty Meetings June 1 Crawfish Boil at 6:00 PM July 4 Independence Day August 13 Teachers report August 28 1st Day of school

Authentic Cajun Crawfish Boil

Again, this year supporters can continue to help FLS raise funds and have a great time doing it. The teaching staff and others are hosting a crawfish boil on Fri., June 1 starting around 6:00 PM. It will be held at Doug and Mary Stuedeman’s party barn, 1314 110th St, Plato. This is an all you can eat affair which includes: hot boiled crawfish (flown in live from Louisiana), red potatoes, smoked sausage, corn on the cob, hot dogs, carrots, mushrooms all spiced up just right Cajun style. We will also have tasty Louisiana desserts and live music provided by assorted artists!! A portion of the profits will be shared with MLHS. (they are also supplying workers)100% of the FLS share will go toward the purchase of needed

improvements for the school such as purchasing supplemental learning materials including STEM equipment.

Chapel Offerings

Our third Trimester chapel offering will be going to Lutherans in Africa. The following was taken from their website: There is a severe shortage of trained pastors in Africa. In America, the Lutheran Church has 1 pastor for every 376 members. In Tanzania, for instance, there is 1 pastor for every 3,500 members. By training Africans to be teachers of the faith, Lutherans In Africa (LIA) is able to help fill the need for pastors and further spread the Gospel, allowing God to work through His external Word.

$200 for Free

As summer approaches please consider our building FLS incentive. First Lutheran is offering $200 to any school or church family who recommends a family to First Lutheran and that family registers a child, or children, for this school year. If you get two families to register, you get $200! Spread the good news that First Lutheran School is a great place to learn about God’s love and the awesome world he has given to us!

Some Important Dates for Next Year

The school board has approved next year’s calendar. The following are some important dates; August 28-first day of school, August 31-September 3 no school, October 17-19 MEA no school, November 22-23 Thanksgiving break, November 30- no school, December 20-January 1 Christmas break, January 21 no school, February 18 no school, March 4 no school, April 18-22 Easter break, May 24 last day of school. A complete calendar will be made available at a later date.

The Cost of Education

As we look to close out another school year, we want to thank the members of First Lutheran Church for the continued financial support of our school. It’s obvious that FLC sees their school as their largest mission project and has for more than 100 years. The cost to educate a single student is over $6000 a year. While some of this is paid through registration fees, tuition, gifts, and fundraising, the majority is paid by FLC. With this in mind, it’s easy to see that our church donations and decisions made at voters meetings directly impact our school. We want to encourage FLC member parents to be actively involved in the mission of our church as well as our school. We also want to remind members to give to FLC that through the grace of God our school may continue to be a blessing.

Extended Preschool Update

A site inspection has been scheduled. This means that if everything is in order we might be able to obtain the license to have afternoon extended day preschool by the beginning of next school year. More news will be shared when it becomes available.

Ongoing Fundraisers

We are collecting: Box Tops, Kwik Trip milk tops, and Country Hearth labels. Our last check was for over $200 from the Box Tops program and we usually receive a large check from our Coborn’s receipts that are now done automatically through More Rewards. Our most recent Kwik Trip tops earned us a check of $166.35.

Happy Summer

The faculty and staff would like to thank all of our FLS parents for allowing us the privilege and honor of teaching your wonderful children! We hope and pray that as they were a blessing to us, our instruction might be a blessing to them. We hope that they would keep their Savior close to their heart this summer and throughout their lives. We pray for God’s protecting hand over all of you and look forward to the beginning of another year (after a refreshing summer break) of “Nurturing Spiritual and Academic Growth” this August!

His Peace ~ FLS faculty and staff.
