Palace, the Royal Yacht Britannia, and so much more! She asked me to tell you about my very first full, formal needlepoint class, which was held here at theNeedlepoint Now studio over Labor Day Weekend:Toni Gerdes' wonderful Klimt Kimono.

I have taken several stitching classes in the past. I hadthe good fortune to go on our UK tour in 2017 andtake a class at the Royal School of Needlework, aswell as the wonderful projects taught by Elizabeth onthe tour. I've also signed up for an internet class. However, this was the first time I've had the chanceto take an in-person class where the entire focus ofthe class was working on one project over the courseof several days. And I have to tell you, the experiencewas wonderful! Intense, sometimes challenging, butsuch a pleasure.

In her last letter, Elizabeth talked about "coloringoutside the lines" when it comes to needlepoint. Imust admit, I feel much the same way. When I see aproject, I frequently start to think about how I canmake it a little more personal. Toni's Klimt Kimonoturned out to be the perfect project for stitchers wholike to put their personal stamp on their needlework.Toni's stitch guide, while thorough, deliberately leftplaces for the stitcher to make their own decisions, which I loved. In fact, right off the bat, we were ableto chose whether we were going to stitch the piece asa kimono or as a rectangle (I chose the rectangle).

The piece is a delight to stitch, with the gloriousKlimt-inspired geometrics broken down into bite-sized pieces. I've found that I've been able to stitch afew sections, put it down, and come back to it againlater with no difficulties. And the threads! Such awonderful range of rich color and texture and sparkle.I hadn't realized what a pleasure it could be just toenjoy the interplay of color and texture of the threadswhile stitching. That is definitely something I will lookfor in future classes.

But more than just the project, I enjoyed thecamaraderie of the class, stitching in a group ofdedicated, passionate stitchers, learning from eachother and helping each other, maybe even with just ahint of competitiveness here and there. Not namingnames, but I was in awe of how fast one of myfellow-stitchers zoomed through the sections. "Ahha," I thought, "Something to aspire to!" The friendlyatmosphere of the class was definitely the cherry ontop of a marvelous weekend.

So, if you've never taken a stitching class before, Ihighly recommend the experience. Or, if you've takena class in the past and didn't find it satisfactory, please give it another try. Check with your localneedlepoint shop to see what opportunities theymight have coming up. Ask your stitching friendsabout their experiences. For just the right class, it'sworth it to travel. You'll learn, you'll have fun, andyou'll grow as a stitcher. And you'll have one morebeautiful piece under your belt!

Green Leaves is a versatile needlepoint design. Randi Paul-Heskins had it made into a beautiful tallis bag. But the oakleaf design doesn’t have to be a tallis bag; it could easily bemade into a pillow or an elegant purse. Embellish the topband with initials or decorative buttons to make the designuniquely your own.

Flower Print: A Petite Stocking

By Patricia M. Mazu

Many different colors and threads may be substituted for the threads used

in the model. You may prefer spring, summer, or fall flowers instead of the

poinsettia effect of these flowers. Nonmetallic threads may easily be

substituted for the metallic threads used in the model. Feel free to kit this

design from your stash or choose your own colors, bright or muted.

Rainbow Ribbons

By Kam Wenzloff

In more than 45 years working in the needlework industry, Kam Wenzloff

has done it all. She owned and managed a retail shop, taught classes,

designed more than 250 painted and charted canvases, created an

embellishment business and sold her designs through her own wholesale

company. It was, she admits, a great deal of fun—and work. But these days,

Kam works at being a grandma and designs not for her customers, but for

herself. “I’ll get an inspiration or a fancy and think I’m going to go try this,

and then I will put it out there on Needlepoint Nation [a public Facebook

group],” she said. “But I’m not really doing this for business reasons. I’m

doing it for fun—actually, all for fun. It’s very enjoyable. I don’t need to be in

myself or people out there that just want something different to do.”
