The Perfect Weekend
Recently I attended a needlepoint retreat put on byOld Town Needlework. They are located inScottsdale, Arizona but the retreat was held at theOmni National Hotel, home of the PGA Tour®Champions Tucson Cologuard Classic golftournament in Tucson, Arizona. I’m not a golfer but Ido admit, golf courses are beautiful. Right outside myroom was the first hole of the 36-hole course. As aneedlepoint fanatic, it was fun watching another typeof fanatic get all jazzed up to do their thing as theycompeted in a small tournament the weekend wewere there. I would sit on my balcony and watch thefleet of golf carts zoom around, surprised that they
managed to avoid hitting each other when thetournament opened. They definitely beat outstitchers in the wardrobe department. I have neverseen so much matchy-matchy! The hat matched thegolf shirt that matched the golf glove that matchedthe socks. You would see couples dressed to match.I’m convinced that no matter how much we spend onneedlepoint, it’s nothing compared to what golfersspend on a day of golf.
Anyway, I digress. I had a lovely time at the retreat.Janice Doxie and her crew put on a fabulous eventthat included room, lunches and dinners, continuousrefreshments in the classroom, an opportunity tohave Jill Rigoli help you with your canvases, (Jill wrotethe stitch guide for "Floral Fun" that appears in ourMay/June issue), an optional class on a charted designby West End Embroidery out of the UK, cute gifts likeneedle minders, a coffee mug with stitch motifs on itand even a chair massage to keep our necks fromlocking up from hours of uninterrupted stitching.
Everyone brought their current works in progress tostitch. There were no restrictions, you could bringanything you wanted to stitch or to make yourselfcomfortable. I thought I was being restrained becauseI only brought five pieces. Did I work on all fivepieces? No but I worked on three. Note to self: Don’tbring so much needlework when the retreat is only threedays. Honestly, two pieces would have been enough. Some of the local people even brought furniture! Isaw several comfy chairs being hauled into thestitching room.
The best part was that I met several needleworkersthat I had never met before, so now I have severalnew friends. One thing a stitcher is never low on, andthat’s friends. Everyone was chatting with everyonewhether they knew them or not. Yes, the room couldget a little loud and boisterous, but I really enjoyed
getting to know new people and I laughed a lot oversome of the stories that were told around the table.
I’ve said it before; I can’t recommend stitching retreatshighly enough. What a great way to share ourknowledge, meet new people and get some of ourUFOs out of the closets and onto our needleworkstands.

Miss Opal
Canvas by the Meredith Collection, Stitch Guide by Peggy Orlando of
Newport Needlepoint,
With hot pink lips and a background to match, Miss Opal by the Meredith
Collection is a lighthearted 8"×8" design. Peggy, who’s been stitching for
more than 40 years, decided that stitches would be too flat and ordinary
for such a whimsical frog. Instead, the stitch guide she wrote adds sparkle
and dimension with beads. Stitched By Carolyn Rutter.
Patches
By Brian Shaw
“I just keep pulling it out and people love it,” said needlepoint designer and
teacher Brian Shaw about his counted design, Patches. He’s been teaching
classes with the design more than once a year since 1994—and it never fails
to delight his students.
All of the 35 stitches in the piece are drawn from Jo Ippolito Christensen’s
The Needlepoint Book. Brian chose a variety of stitches, including his
favorites and basketweave.

Spring has finally sprung! We've been enjoying thelonger, sunnier days, but it's still cool enough in theevening that a cup of chamomile tea is just the thingto wind down with as I stitch and think aboutsummer. Last time, I mentioned keeping my eyesaway from the seed catalogs. I'm happy to be able tosay I was successful and only added a couple of newseed packets to the mix: some borage to grow for thebees, and a really pretty kind of nasturtium I hadn'tseen before, one that works well in containers.
Here's the final coaster from the series I designed tofit in Planet Earth Fiber's self-finishing leathercoasters and stitched with their vibrant 100% MerinoWool thread. I was inspired by crisp, modernScandinavian designs. The first three designsappeared in previous newsletters. If you were inspiredto stitch a set yourself, I'd love to see your pictures. Please send them to [email protected] and happy stitching!
