Or at Harvey Nichols, Harrods or Net-A-Porter, the main site for fashionistas? Apsara was formed in 2003 by Samantha Graham-Bell, and quickly established itself. Thanks in large part to people like Elle McPherson who were seen in Apsara gar-ments. Kaftans and tuniks with embroidered details have become a trademark of the various collections.

air-bubblesprestige champagne producer krug call their Krug Balloon ”a manifest expression of near-unattainable luxury.” The basket and cushions have been draped in premium white leather by upholsterers Domeau & Pérès. ”Think of the balloon as an outsized Birkin bag” they explain. The basket seats eight passengers, plus pilot and butler. Take off is from Paris, where the Gonfolier brothers took the world’s first balloon flight in 1783. The passengers enjoy hors d’ouvres on the ground, followed by a three course meal in the air. Marc Brétillot, the company ”food artist”, does not lack a sense of humour. When the passengers open their main course, Feuilleté de canard, feathers fly out. No doubt you can work out which drink is in constant sup-ply. Price per ascent: € 35 830.

home swept homeAfter a long trip it’s always nice to get home, especially to one that is nice and tidy. But if you leave a Navibot back at home then you will be guaranteed dust-free corners when you get back. Equipped with artifical intelligence, this is a self-operating hoover from Samsung who are always willing to do their bit for everyday management in the home. A camera sits on the top of Navibot with a angle providing a full 167 degrees and films at a rate of 30 frames a second. The image information is processed by two processors which draw up a plan of the room, after which it then begins its task. The price of this practical cleaning aid is € 720.

with the swiss-based air-line lunajet, it is possible to fly by private jet for first and business class prices. This is pos-sible through customers buying ”empty” routes in Europé, Mid-dle East, Russia and USA. Luna-jet boasts of being able to offer 50–80 percent lower prices than normal private jet rates.

A Hotel JewelAs all lovers of the jewellry brand know that it’s known as Bulgari and not Bvlgari. The Bvlgari logotype is spelt that way because it´s a typographical play on the Roman

alphabet where the the U is spellt with a V.

ulgari Hotel, which was opened in 2004 and which also has a sister hotel in Bali, still feels in 2010 ex-tremely elegant and refined. The

world-famous designer, Antonio Cittero has managed to create a hotel which exudes sophis-ticated minimalism. Most striking is the 4,000 square-meter large gardens together with the hammam, adorned in green glass and gold mo-saics. The first name is elegance and exclusivity when it comes to this hotel which is strategi-cally placed in the district of Brega. From here it is within crawling distance to much of the best shopping, the 18th century La Scala and the gothic cathedral of Dumo di Milano, the world’s third largest church.

Most of the rooms have balconies of teak which face out to the gardens. On the top floor are suites which have grandiose views and pro-vide seclusion.

The erection of the hotel in the form of the three existing buildings (of which the oldest dates from the 1600s and the youngest from the 1900s, the origin of the gardens go back to the 13th century) took four years to complete and involved 400 craftsmen. 300 tonnes of marble were used (double that which is normally used in prestige hotels of this size, the fireplace of Zimbabwe marble, which sits in the lounge, weighs 15 tonnes).

The hotel has a raft of services which they supply their clientèle with, such as personal trainers and personal shoppers, private viewings of «secret» villas and museums in Milan, trips out to Lake Como by sea-plane, drives at the Monza Formula 1 race track and much, much more.

Via Montenapoleone, Via Sant’ Andrea and Via della Spiga constitute together the The Golden Triangle. the fashionistas flock here to methodi-cally scan for Dior, Louis, Vuitton, Prada, Val-entino, Gucci, Versace, Armani, Victor & Rolf (their upside-down boutique is a must), Sergio Rossi and more.

The hotel exudes sophisticated minimalism

Another manufacturer which you must not miss in Milan is 10 Corso Como, the world’s best life-style boutique alongside Colette in Paris. As everybody knows, Milan is the centre of the universe when it comes to interior design. Living Divani, Poltrona Frau, Sawaya & Moroni, de Padova, Edra, B & B Italia, Cappellini, Driade...so many exquisite show-rooms and so little time....bear in mind also that over the break you’ve got to make time for Just Cavalli

Café, Dolce & Gabbarnas restaurant and bar Gold, the Nobu Restaurant and bar, which is situated in Armani’s own department store which takes up the whole quarter of Via Manzoni, and Marino Alla Sca-la, which resides by La Scala and which is owned by the fashion house of Trussardi. It’s fortunate that Bulgari Hotel has a spa to recover in and that on the room-service menu, in peace and quiet, you can buy Bulgari’s watches and jewellry.

p o r t u g a l treatA city with two faces. The most tangi-

ble of these is the town’s old history with the castle, whose origins go back to the time of the Mores as rulers over Lisbon/

Portugal and the Monastry in Belem from whose quay Vasco da Gama departed on

his adventures around the world. But Lis-bon also has another, modern face to show

off as well, above all around the World Exhibition area from 1998 where the Ca-sino, trade halls and shopping centre rub shoulders in the newly created town plan in stark contrast to the old town. Both of these areas has its own charm and should be visited so that you, as the visitor, can

experience Lisbon’s two faces.

ut, being guests in this fantstic town, from which point do you start to enjoy a wonderful long break? We suggest that you begin your stay by checking into Lisbon’s most interesting hotel, the Interna-

tional Design Hotel. Even here, the old, traditional Lisbon meets the bold, modern one. The recipe for the Design Ho-tel is extremely pioneering, by taking a hotel, nearly 200 years old and with history literally permeating through its walls, and undertaking restoration work based on the ideas of some of Lisbon’s most skilful and adventurous designers and hotel owners. The result is a hotel which lies right at the heart of the city which really stands out with its fresh-ly-painted lilac façade. But that’s just the start. The hotel, which only has 55 rooms, leaves it up to its guests, who have reserved their rooms well beforehand, to choose from the hotel’s four concepts on offer. One for each floor. The first floor is Urban. On reaching the floor you are greeted by the mute, but nonetheless, tangible sound and feel of the city with cars, sirens as well as modern artwork. The rooms are tastefully decorated according to the latest trends. The second floor is Zen, an Asian-inspired concept for those who seek tranquility. The two opposing forces react in harmony and offer the guests a peaceful night’s sleep. After that the third floor continues with its Tribal theme, the sultry rooms with dark colours spontaneously hint at Africa. Artworks which stand out are the zebra-patterned backdrop to the stairs and a bamboo installation by the lift. Things liven up on the fourth floor with its Pop Art-designed rooms. When you step out of the lift you are met with the mild aroma of bubblegum (!). The rooms are decorated in shocking pink with the artwork inspired by Andy Warhol, furthermore there are famous quotes from this legendary artist in the toilets of some of these rooms. The Pop Culture rooms are stripped back and arranged simply allowing the colours to do the talking instead. There are also details which pow-erfully combine to provide a comfortable feel, namely the obligatory bean bags in lime green.

The days can be wiled away in the heart of Lisbon which is literally infested with everything from historical sites to cafés and port shops and everything can be found within comfortable walking distance. For a meal out, which isn’t taken before 21:00 at the earliest, then you can’t miss the excellent restaurant Taveres Rico. Even here we’ll find 200-year old traditions. Things quite simply mature that little bit more slowly in Lisbon. One description which we happened

to trip over was that the restaurant had an Aristocratic feel, so with a smile on our lips we made our way there through a city of full of life and bustle. At the door, you are greeted by a stern head-waiter who, in a friendly but firm manner, shows you to your table in the restaurant. The decor is based on a 17th century prince’s palace from somewhere in France. Large mirrors adorn the walls, the colour solely gold and beautiful ornate statues fill the room with a feeling of authentic Portuguese culinary tradition. Here, we expected a menu of a traditional variety, which in Portugal consists of heavy, wholesome dishes but how wrong we were the courses are Portuguese for sure but so visionary and full of fresh ideas that our jaws nearly dropped straight after the first dish from the taster menu. The base ingredients and wines are obviously one hundred percent Portuguese, but the chef has produced a clear, well-balanced menu offering you everything which can be provided by the sea in the form of an aspic containing muscles, oysters and other shellfish. On the menu which we had the pleasure of enjoying, we were even offered pigeon and fish, all this combined with fantastic country wines.

More than satisfied, we made our way to Lisbon’s hottest club, Silk. For the sake of it, it should be added perhaps that you don’t need to worry about queuing because if you’re not on the list you’re not going to get in this is an exclusive club with a fantastic view looking out over Lisbon at night. Here you’ll round your evening off perfectly, enjoying a drink in the cool breeze thinking about when you’ll next be coming back to Lisbon, because one thing is certain. You will be back.

Do you wear shoes in paradise? Well, on the Seychelles you don’t need them.

Welcome to the island kingdom right in the middle of the Indian Ocean where bare-foot

luxury is matter of course.

ravel destinations and accommodation are often chosen with the greatest of care, but when it comes to the choice of transport the mistake is often made in not choosing a company with the same degree of care. This

results in landing at the desired destination with sore joints and an overwhelming tiredness, as a result of long waiting times in lounges that look the same wherever, miserable on-board comfort and poor service.

In Doha, you’ll find Qatar Airways distinguished busi-ness class lounge which is situated in a building which seems more like a luxury hotel.

In the lounge, which cost 100 million dollars to build, you won’t see any queues. Over an area of half a square kilometer are contained massage parlours, jacuzzis and play areas for older children with the latest in game con-soles. Here you will also find childminding for the smaller ones, conference rooms with secretarial services, health spa, 24-hour doctor’s surgery and much more besides.

A generous helping of champagne and delicious food is served once you step off the plane.

Peace and quiet prevails, no flight departure an-nouncements and all that. You are adressed personally, in a soft and gentle manner, by a lounge hostess.

It can feel a bit like you have been interupted right in the middle of a holiday as you sit in the massage chair, sipping a glass of chilled champagne to suddenly hear that its time to board your flight. With a certain amount of reluctance, you leave the lounge to be escorted to the luxury car which takes you to your flight.

It’s very rare that you want your transfer times to be just that bit longer but you wouldn’t cry if your departure was delayed.

It’s not just the destination but it’s also the journey there which is to be enjoyed.

Flying by Qatar Airlines is like a nice evening in, watch-ing TV on the sofa with your own butler. Choose from one of the latest films from the film register or zap your way through the many international satellite tv-channels. Lean your seat back to horizontal position, switch on the massage button, and enjoy the back massage, which is built into your seat, while you wait for your champagne.

The Seychelles is an island group containing 115 islands. The main island, Mahe, and the near-lying is-lands of Praslin and La Digue consist of granite and the outer islands forming an extensive archipelago are made up of coral.

Apart from the bare-foot life on some of the Seychelles’ numerous and delightful beaches, are offered, among other things, sailing, trekking, fishing, diving, golf and a host of fantastic excursions. The tempo in the capital of Victoria, which is, by the way, the world’s smallest capi-tal, is pleasantly slow. There is a pulse to the town but to a great extent it’s the climate which dictates the tempo. The average air temperature is 27.5C and the water tem-perature hovers around the 28–29C. mark. Just as on most paradise islands, you hurry slowly. Victoria is chief-ly the financial centre and most visitors make it the

first stop before they book flights to the other islands. It can be nice to hand over the logistical arrangements to the lo-cal company, 7South, who offer custom-made programmes, can book flight and boat tickets, offer personal drivers and guides and such, which can make things more practical and comfortable for you during your stay. You’re greeted at the airport and everything else is then catered for. All you need to do is enjoy which is neither difficult nor strenuous.

When you’ve decided you’d like to investigate the oth-er islands, Air Seychelles have a minor passenger service which flies daily between some of the larger islands.

A window seat is recommended as the views are, to put

it mildly, inviting. The sea shifts from emerald green to the deepest blue, you fly over chalk-white atolls encircled by living corals, luxuriant jungles with hidden beaches and gentle granite cliffs.

If you let your eyes settle on the clear waters then you’ll have a chance of spotting the world’s largest species of fish, the whale shark. This majestic creature can measure up to 18 meters in length.

It can bump a little as the small aircraft lands on Den-nis Island with the grass airstrip lying beside the ‘big blue’. Dennis Island is a privately owned island. Here, you are taken care of as soon as you step off the plane and escorted

to the electric golf buggies. Fresh water offered and ingredi-ences of the days meal are read out. Anything which isn’t cultivated on the island is brought in from Mahe. The air is clear, no pollution or noisy traffic, no souvenir shops or high-rise buildings. The habitation is wild and lush. You won’t find any snakes or dangerous animals, only Toby, a nice 110 year-old turtle and his friends. It’s difficult not to be fascinated by this prehistoric-like animal who has wan-dered, at a slow pace, over these islands long before us. They can weigh over two hundred kilos and live up to 200 years. Today they live in the wild on the Seychelles and also on the Galapogos Islands. On Dennis Island you live off,

and with, nature. A few years ago the owners started several successful projects. Among other things, they give a little bit of ground to the employees where they can grow fruit and vegetables and any produce which they don’t use them-selves can then be sold to the resort.

They’ve created breeding grounds in protected natural areas for those species of birds threatened by extinction. An organic farm can also be found on the island with pigs, chickens, quails together with some fruit and vegetable plots.

There are twenty five villas on the island, all generous in space with regard to the villa itself and the private beach area. When you get tired of lying on the sun-lounger. then there are a good deal of water activities to hand. Why not hire one of the sailing boats and cruise over the reef, or a kayak and paddle amongst the turtles which gather and group like buoys on the surface. The view is fantastic and the tempera-ture pleasant, the show under the surface magnificent. Reef sharks, Napoleon fish and other colourful inhabitants of the reef can be witnessed on every snorkel dive.

Just before sunset, you can withdraw to the veranda where a massage awaits you followed by a glass of cham-pagne under the starlit skies.

When it is time for bed the sound of the waves lapping against the beach rock you off to sleep in the knowledge that tomorrow brings another day in Eden’s pleasure garden.

Praslin is the next largest island and one of the most known. As well as all its beautiful beaches, such as Anse Lazio, Praslin is also a paradise for botanists.

The national park, Vallee de Mai, is a prehistoric palm forest, which is the home to the “Double nut”, Coco de Mer, which has become something of a trademark for the Seychelles. where it only grows in the wild within the bounds of the national park. It’s the world’s largest seed and can weigh over 20 kilos and also has the form of a female attribute.

It’s best to get to the park before it stirs in order to roam undisturbed on the narrow paths which lead you through the dense rainforest past murmuring waterfalls and majes-tic palm trees. The giant palm leaves only allow some of the sun’s rays to penetrate which makes for a magical atmos-phere and reminds you of scenes from Jurassic Park. It’s easy to understand why Vallee de Mai has been listed as a unesco World Heritage Site.

A short boat ride from Praslin takes you to the island of La Digne with its gently sculpted granite cliffs, sleepy fish-ing villages, vanilla plantations and cocoa palms. There are no asphalt roads and the most usual means of transport are by foot, bike or ox-driven carts. The beaches around the is-land are, to put it mildly, spectacular, Anse Source d’Argent is probably the most famous and most photographed beach in the world. Many will probably recognise it from the Bac-cardi advertisements.

The Seychelles have an unbelievable amount of beautiful islands and several award-winning resorts that it really can be difficult to choose. But when it comes to North Island then there isn’t a place on Earth which can measure up to it in terms of beauty or as a pioneering concept. North Island is much more than an exclusive beach resort. During the development of North Island, the basic idea was to create a place like Noah’s Ark where the Seychelles’ fragile and threatened fauna would be protected. Nature’s Origins are being preserved. A place for recovery and rebirth for ani-mals and nature but also for humans. The result is a unique experience and something which stays with you long after you’ve returned home.

This refuge offers, undeniably, the best in service, ac-commodation, spas, gastronomy and activities.

In the spirit of true ecology, not a single nail was used and, for the most part, only fallen trees from the island were used, nevertheless the result is completely amazing. Phillipe Starck toilets, Sori Yanagi stools, jaccuzzis in Bal-inese marble and other designer goodies spice up the dish. Craftsmen were flown in from, among other places, Bali and South Africa in order to realize together the vision in creating the ultimate Robinson Crusoe experience. With-out instinctive flair, the whole project could have ended up pretentious and stiff, but North Island’s design is truly chic,

Page 37: First Class Concierge Höst 2010

relaxed, comfortable and natural. There’s an abundance of beautiful easy chairs to stretch

out on like, for example bean-bags on the sands at the West Beach Sunset Bar or the generously sized sofa-bed at Honeymoon Beach, a 300 meter-long beach paradise which only one pair at a time can frequent. A “velvet rope” before the path which leads to the beach announces when it is occupied.

Zil Air is the helicopter company which most quickly and comfortably whisks you to this secluded paradise. From Mahe it takes about 20 minutes by helicopter, a dream-like trip with views which are difficult to tire of looking at. By the small helicopter landing pad, your host stands bronzed, bare-foot with his linen shirt flapping lightly in the wind and welcomes you warmly to paradise. You are escorted to the lounge where you are requested to leave your shoes.

You are now initiated into the Robinson Crusoe family. A delicious passion-fruit juice gives you a foretaste of what is to come. Before your arrival you are asked to fill in a form indicating your preferences regarding food and drink. On North Island there are no “musts”, everything is possible and the only limitation is your own imagination. You decide yourself how your meal shall be, where they are to be eaten and at which time of the day. The head chef will happily come up with wine recommendations and suggestions for your menu. There’s a well-stocked wine-cellar and vintage wines and champagnes at the disposal of the guests.

Expectations on North Island are surpassed time and time again. Everything is perfect, impeccable and full of wonderful surprises. The private 450 square-meter large villa with its own pool, garden and butler are in a class of its own. By the entrance stands the four-wheel drive golf

buggy parked which, with a clear conscience, you can drive around merrily as its electric powered.

The butler button on the telephone is like a modern ver-sion of Aladdin’s Lamp. You press the button and before you know it, your wishes are granted.

For example, your own beach decked-out with flaming torches and candles, lobster and champagne served under a star-lit sky. A freshly baked chocolate cake at two in the morning. All the dirty washing washed and wrapped in tis-sue-paper, or why not a cosy evening in, with your own cook preparing culinary delights in the kitchen. The expression “home sweet home” is long forgotten.

A visit to the spa is a must on North Island. Once the but-ler has arranged your bed, drawn the curtains to the enor-mous panoramic windows, lit the scented candles, brought out the San Pellegrino and placed it on the bedside table and wished you a good night then it’s time to choose which tones you want to drop off to. Why not Aretha Franklin, track number 1876 from the music library?

Thoroughly rested and content, you awaken to the smell of freshly-baked bread and the sound of careful hands pre-paring breakfast in the kitchen.

Dressing gown and slippers hang at arms-length from the bed and the bath has been run.

The soundtrack of the “big blue” provides a hint of the coming morning dive. If you don’t possess a diving cer-tificate already then, of course, this will be arranged as it is included (PADI). The buggy, which can do a full forty

kilometers per hour, is packed with surf-board, a bottle of freshly squeezed passion fruit juice and suntan lotion. It’s unbelievably great fun to drive through the jungle, but you must watch out for the signs warning you against giant tur-tles in the area. These giant turtles wander freely over the island and often cross the small, winding roads.

When you arrive at the diving centre, all you need for the day’s dive has already been arranged. The equipment is the latest and the suit fits as if it were your own. The reef out-side is a national park and therefore its inhabitants aren’t particularly shy. The private diving instructor takes you to the edge of the reef. Here under the surface awaits a land-scape of coral forest, brilliant anemones like blooming sum-mer meadows, shoals of rays weaving their way majestically on, it’s not far away from being a religious experience.

If you want to immortalize the dive then it’s just a ques-tion of asking the diving instructor to take along an under-water camera and getting him to take some shots of you together with Nemo.

The next divine moment awaits you after the diving ses-sion. To experience the North Island spa is almost like be-ing bodily and spiritually cleansed, so close to God you can get on a little island in the Indian Ocean. The spa facility lies like a temple on a hill, embedded amongst the greenery with a fantastic view out over the shimmering, turquoise sea. For the less energetic, you can easily take the golf bug-gy all the way there. And even the buggy gets a quick facial, wash and battery charge.

On the stairs by the entrance stand large lanterns, in a beautiful and in a hand forged Balinese bowl some-one has lit incense with the aroma of ylang ylang. The interior is finished in turquoise, wood and sandstone. The gigantic windows which face the sea are usually wide-open so that the sea breeze slowly caresses away the heat of the day. The turquoise sea shifts in colour at dusk to the deepest blue and the beach gleams like silver with the final rays of the day’s sunlight. Every visit to the spa is introduced with a cup of tea and a foot-massage,

first the feet are washed clean in a foot-bath of lotus flowers. The holistic spa menu is thorough and inviting. You find treatments and inspiration from many parts of the world, many thanks to the origins of spa therapy, such as Thailand, South Africa and Bali. A visit to the spa is a must on North Island. After a cure, you feel re-born, grateful and unbelievably humble before this wonderful place. The word ‘stress’ doesn’t exist in creole (the local language of the Sychelles). This is a wonderful insight to take home with you.

It seems here that someone has thought of every-thing. This is truly paradise!

No spoken empathic ability is required to imagine the feel-ing before the first heli-ski run in the snow-clad hills of British Columbia, Canada. On the other hand, the fact that the other fifty trips provide the same overwhelming buzz and sense of freedom borders on the incomprehensible.

mong ski enthusiasts there is no doubt. British Columbia provides the world’s

best heli-skiing opportunities. Over 95 percent of the world’s heli-skiing is being carried out here. Large,

open fields of undisturbed loose snow at a 45 degree angle continuously make the thoughts of devoted skiers wander to BC. Short and simple, it’s every free skier’s Mecca on Earth. It’s rela-tively easy to get here as most of the ski resorts are situated within an hour’s flight by helicopter from the city of Vancouver.

In this vast mountain region there are thou-sands and thousands of enticing peaks and countless square meters of undisturbed meter-deep powder snow. There are even world-class ski resorts here with their long pistes which makes the Alps look pale in comparison. Whis-tler is the largest and most famous of the all the ski resorts in the province and this is also where the 2010 Winter Olympics were held. But even such a high class ski resort such as this, it has nothing in the same way that heli-skiing can offer.

Jet-lagged and lacking in sleep, you are ten-derly taken care of at the luxuriant, neat lodge right out in the middle of the wilderness. The quiet atmosphere amongst the dramatically beautiful natural scenary opens your senses and prepares you for the adventure of your life. Tiredness gradually turns into ever increasing expectation. At last, morning arrives with the first run getting nearer by the minute. After a good night’s sleep, a fortifying breakfast eaten in front of the open fire in the timbered lodge and lively chat with the helicopter pilot, the tension is now reaching its climax. Before departure, a rigorous safety check is made with instructions about how the highly technological avalanche safety-equipment works.

The helicopter warms up and the rotorblades accelerate in time with your pulse. Take-off! A dizzyingly beautiful flight over forests, frozen lakes, craggy mountains and ravines are offered in the course of just a few minutes. The expanse is enormous and behind every snow-covered mountain, begins a new one. The landscape is fabulously beautiful but in all its beauty, at the same time, dramatic and demanding of respect. The pilot takes us up to the first peak which measures 2,600 meters above sea level. After a skilfully executed landing on a snow-clad mountain with a strong, gusty wind, we disema-bark the helicopter in almost military fashion. The pulse is nearly reaching its peak as we sit hunched up in the loose snow as we hear the rhythmic throb of the helicopter as it makes its departure.

The total silence, once the dull sound of the distant heli-copter has died away, inspires a feeling of unconditional free-dom. Suddenly, you are alone on the mountain, but the biting wind reminds you of how small you really are, without the slightest trace of humanity. Silence. Grandeur.

A moment of reveration is followed by some fumbling with the snow-covered ski and snowboard equipment. Once the ski-boots have been tightend and the bindings adjusted, the guide gives the order to start the journey down. Nobody goes to the left of the guide’s tracks, by the overhang, we all go one after the other, by adopting the formation for precipices close by the edge. Go for it!

A crazy run ensues. There’s nothing else but the present, nothing else exists, there’s quite simply no room for it there. Sunken in the undisturbed, cold snow, we take the first prob-ing sweeps. The snow which is light and soft is thrown up like dust. Everything is under control and we pick up the pace, engaging the auto-pilot.

The run assumes the form which is something of a eu-phoric dance with ecstatic punctuations. The adreneline pumps through the body as the speed increases, snow flies up around you so much that your vision is gradually dimin-ished. An absolute feeling of freedom is mixed with touches of unreality. Like rushing through a winter’s dream. Perhaps not quite such a lengthy dream as the legs fold, probably due to lactic acid shock, before we reach the meeting point, a few thousand meters further down. After that: Da capo. To be able to experience a such formidable combination of qual-ity and quantity shouldn’t be possible. The adrenalin masks the taste of blood in the mouth, the high pulse-rate and the cramps in the legs., but you still want to have more...

The pilot takes us to new peaks, new sheer drops before every run. Long, steep 45-degree gullies bor-dered by cliffs and vertical drops which demand re-spect which then open themselves out into endless fields of feather-light powder. The next time, it’s un-dulating valleys with the last part taking you through forest. The fantastic thing is that every run is made on virgin terrain.

Marks in the snow cover are made with reverance. In a normal day, around fifteen helicopter lifts are can be made. With this you can clear about thirty thousand vertical feet. That’s to say, something like skiing down Mount Everest. Lunch is taken at the base of one of the mountains, or if the team are really grabbed by the ski-devil, in the helicopter itself between lifts. Once you get home to the private lodge

after an almost surreal skiing experience you are met by sheer thoughtfulness, for example in the form of a lovingly prepared oyster-buffet, laid out by the open fire and massage therapy to carefully bring back your legs to life. After that, a comfortably heated sauna and a refreshing jacuzzi bath. Once loosened up and recovered, the chef serves an exqui-site meal which is enjoyed in a warm, relaxed atmosphere.

The subject of the conversation is obvious, of course. The snow which falls on BC is created when the moist air

from the Pacific Ocean meets the dry winds directly above the area and provide unlimited access to undisturbed, po-rous powder snow. The area is a powder-proof zone! Janu-ary and February offers the deepest powder, but then the air temperature is a little colder too, while March and April are

less frosty but with heavier snow. For more inspirational images and literature about heli-

skiing in british Columbia then go to: www.tlhheliskiing.com.

Scents of the cityIn recent times, scented candles have become an important detail for knowledgeable designers and global nomads. First Class Concierge’s staff have been studying the subject and doing fieldwork in

the biggest metropolises. Here is their report.

T he days of candles as only a source of light are long gone.

For decades, candles of various shapes and sizes have been an important feature in

the design of our homes. The visual effect of the home is complemented by an elegant scent that spreads to create the right “ambience”.

Today there are collections in most perfume and fash-ion stores, and we can choose amongst scents for bedroom, bathroom/spa and lounge. For the true enthusiast there are now elegantly packaged mini scented candles to take on your journey for your hotel room

– you can thus be secure with your favourite scent wher-ever you are in the world.

For many years, Diptyque of France has been dominant - high quality, elegantly packaged and currently with around 30 scents to be studied and sniffed through. One of the company’s biggest successes is the scent that carries John Galliano’s name.

New ”collections” are promoted and reviewed with the same vocabulary as a tutored sommelier.

The hectic pulse of New York demands confident, dis-tinct and profiled products.

Bond no. 9:s scents (also available as perfume and room spray) are distinct products that demand attention. Clear coloured glass, golden labels and witty names divided into ”Down-, Mid- and Uptown” and ”NYC Beaches”. Candles named after New York’s subway stations such as ”China Town”, ”Little Italy” – or perhaps the scented candle ”Wall Street” in its last days …

The undersigned recommends the beautiful green candle ”Eau de New York” and Andy Warhol ”Factory” – all for ”mak-ing scents of New York”, which is the company’s slogan.

In London, the Victorian and traditional scent makers Penhaligon’s and Floris have got competition.

Jo Malone was an early contender who, apart from lim-ited edition scents, sells beautiful sets of three harmonized scents.

But we fell for a small new exclusive perfumer: Or-

monde Jayne in Royal Arcade on Old Bond Street. Genu-ine flower aromas in soft harmony like the most beautiful English garden.

There are ten scents to choose from. We chose “Casa-blanca”, more sweetly elegant than the lily that has given the scent its name.

Paris: the world’s oldest candle maker Cire Trudon, estab-lished as early as 1643 as royal purveyor to Louis XIV and later to Napoleon, reflects the grandeur and pomp of Paris.

Scents are presented in bottle green, thick glass with gold-en, shield-shaped labels, with names that excite the imagi-nation such as ”Trianon”, ”Chandernagor”, ”Mademoiselle de la Vallière” and our favourite: – ”Abd El Kader” with the feeling of powerful scents from the Sahara and Morocco. A catalogue with detailed documentation and coloured etch-ings from the 18th century arouses the interest.

Dag 11 - 12: Tubu Tree Camp, Okavango. Dag 17 - 18: Livingstone - Stockholm.

Heavenly HideawayPrivate butler, your own beach with pure white

sand, turquoise waters that are 30 degrees warm, an island paradise. Need any more clues? Didn’t

think so – we are of course in the Maldives!

s far north as one can possibly venture in the Maldives you will find Island Hidea-way, a beautiful and totally secluded resort. The journey here may be long, but it is well

worth the effort. Like a final outpost of exclusivity before the Indian Ocean takes over, recreation and enjoyment is provided on Dhonakulhi Island, an island paradise the size of 28 football pitches. The glistening turquoise water wash-es over the surrounding reef, and caresses the pure white sand that is so wonderful to dig your toes into. The fact that this place is something quite out of the ordinary is con-firmed upon arrival at Malé International Airport. While staff members from other Maldivian resorts wait with plas-tic signs on which the travellers’ names have been written with marker pen, the sign for Island Hideaway is made from dark mahogany, and the name of each guest is tastefully displayed in beautiful carved lettering of light wood. Board-ing a plane again after a 10 hour flight may not seem par-ticularly appealing, but as soon as the 25-seater plane has

taken off you will be spellbound by the magnificent views available through the window. The incredibly beautiful coral islands stretch before you like a pearl necklace, and any feelings of tiredness have suddenly vanished without a trace. When the plane lands half an hour later, the private butler collects your luggage and makes sure that it is loaded onto the speedboat that will take you the last bit of your journey to your own private slice of heaven. As of now you no longer need to think of anything yourself, because eve-rything will be taken care of by your butler, while you can instead concentrate all of your time and energy on simply enjoying yourself and feeling good; something that is truly easy to do at Island Hideaway.

Majestic water palacesThe sandbank on the northern side of the island is home to the two magnificent water palaces; an excellent alterna-tive for anyone wishing to experience a feeling of exclusivity that can seldom be found. Each palace has a large private

area of 1,420 m² including eight villas placed on the raised wooden deck that connects all of the residence’s Infinity pools. The pools are a chapter unto themselves, with the sharp edges giving the impression that the pool runs di-rectly into the turquoise sea. Nothing is lacking here; even the palace’s butler has his own villa so that he can quickly provide the guests with the best possible service 24 hours a day. One of the residences has its one-hundred-metre-long private beach to the east, providing the ideal location from which to enjoy the magnificent sunrise; while the other res-idence has its stretch of beach to the west, affording guests instead a perfect view of the equally captivating sunset.

When it comes to accommodation, there are five differ-ent types of villa to choose from, all of which are extremely exclusive with their own private beach and a butler whose only task is to make sure that the guests receive the best possible service. That which differentiates the villas from each other is the size of the living quarters and the garden. With the exception of the somewhat more modest Funa

Pavilions, all of the villas have their own pool as well as a handmade marble bathtub large enough for two people that can be found in the stunningly beautiful outdoor bathroom on the terrace. The furnishings are in earthy tones, blend-ing naturally with the surrounding rain forest and the pure white beaches; while the latest technology has of course been used in the form of an entertainment centre with a comprehensive selection of the most recent film successes and everything from classical music to the latest hits.

If you are really looking for a unique living experience then you should book one of the two newly-built Hideaway water suites. Truly in a class of their own, you will find nothing like them anywhere else in the Maldives. Built on wooden pillars in the shallow turquoise-blue lagoon, and with a 235 m² wooden deck from which the round outdoor bathtub provides a captivating view of the sea and all of Dhonakulhi Island, these suites provide the perfect setting for recreation. The sauna, the steam room and the com-prehensive spa facilities are complemented by an outdoor

t h e m a l d i v e s

treatment room in which soothing spa treatments can be enjoyed to the accompaniment of the calm and peaceful lapping of the lukewarm water against the suite’s pillars.

Spa on a pedestalIf all of the comforts provided by your private lodgings are not enough to completely fill your days at Island Hideaway, there are also a number of recreational and outdoor activities on offer. These include water sports, amongst which diving is an activity that simply must be tested, regardless of whether you are an experienced diver or a novice. The view is excep-tional at any of the more than 20 pristine diving locations, and the number of species on display, with their special and wonderful glowing neon colours, seems endless. Sharks, of which there are plenty, are of a size that makes their presence exciting but never threatening, they simply add an extra spice to the experience. The island’s own reef lays at a handy dis-tance no more than ten to thirty metres from the shore, and is therefore the perfect location for snorkelling.

After spending a few hours under water, what could be better for a tired body than a spa treatment? Luckily, at Island Hideaway you will find a spa of world class. Highly-

trained therapists are available to take care of both body and soul in the private treatment rooms, each of them built on pillars with a far-reaching view out over the great blue sea, whether you happen to be on the treatment table or in the marble bathtub.

The list of different treatments available is incredibly long, and all of the oils and other spa products used come from industry-leading names. Having your body pampered in this unique environment, with the turquoise waters un-dulating beneath, is something that only a few are privi-leged enough to ever experience.

If faster-moving activities are more to your liking, there is a sports centre with a large number of sporting pastimes to choose from. Here you will find two tennis courts with elec-tric lighting, and a tennis instructor who is more than hap-py to oppose you. If you so wish, the instructor will gladly give you tips as you play, advice that could be very useful in those matches back at home against boastful colleagues.

Other activities available include kite surfing, billiards and table tennis, or why not visit the well-equipped gym? The children have their own club where trained staff make sure that the young ones get as much out of their time in

Page 75: First Class Concierge Höst 2010

the Maldives as possible; a much welcome alternative for stressed parents who can therefore find a little time for themselves and simply relax.

Evening delightsWhen the sun has finally disappeared beyond the horizon there are a number of alternatives as to where your evening meal can be enjoyed. Should you simply wish to enjoy each other’s company, the butler will gladly and quickly arrange for a delicious meal in the privacy of your own lodgings. For those wishing to dine out , the island has no less than three different restaurants; it is however recommended that you book your table with the butler earlier during the day, as places are relatively limited in each of these small, cosy and snug restaurants.

The Meeru Bar is recommended for its view of wonderful sunsets, as well as for its extensive selection of single

malt whiskies; nowhere else in the Indian ocean will you

find as many types of whisky as here in the Meeru Bar. A smoky malt whisky is the perfect avec after enjoying a well-cooked rib eye steak; while if malt whisky is not one of your great passions, and you prefer the delights of Asian cooking, then the Gaafushis is your obvious choice. Here you will be served specialties from the whole of Asia on a beautifully-set table no more than half a metre above the surface of the water. This restaurant is namely built directly above the sea, with glass floors that enable the wild nightlife of the fish to provide the entertainment. If it is another sort of entertain-ment you are after, then the Matheefaru restaurant, which can be found next to the large pool area, arranges concerts with typical Maldivian music playing at the same time that sumptuous buffets are provided that offer all of the culinary delights of the sea. If the weather allows, which it almost al-ways does, the tables are placed out on the still-warm sand, and you are able to enjoy your meal under the millions of stars that light up the heavens.

Just beingTo slowly leave the pleasant world of dreams behind you, and wake up to the beautiful serenade provided by hun-dreds of birds, is the ultimate way to begin a new day in paradise. Outside the bedroom window, the already sun-drenched, pure white beach can be discerned. And it is your very own private beach, to be enjoyed solely by yourself and your companion(s), with no one else nearby save possibly for your equally private butler who will do everything pos-sible to fulfil your wishes.

After a refreshing dip in the pool, why not take a bot-tle of Perrier, a good book and a towel on the 30-step-long path that leads to the idyllic beach. After a few wonderfully lazy hours spent alternating between the beautiful water and some bouts of reading, the butler arrives to inform you that lunch is served.

After lunch, you may feel that a bit of exercise is in order, at which point you can hop up onto the bicycles that are parked outside each villa. The island is exactly the right size for cycling around, and 20 minutes later your cycling trip is complete, precisely the appropriate length of time for physical activity in the lovely 35 degree warmth. After that it is once again time for a visit to the beach. Time seems to stand still, and the feeling of relaxation is complete. Here you will find time to be yourself, for yourself. At Island Hideaway, you spoil yourself at the same time that you are being spoiled by the first-class service provided in wonder-ful surroundings. Quite simply, it is the perfect hideaway if you are only satisfied with the best that the world has to offer. We promise that you will find it here, and now you won’t even need to look …

a masterpieceIn the autumn of 2009, St Petersburg most unusual hotel was opened. At

Radisson Hotel Sonya, everything from the interior fittings to the names of the rooms and the menus has been designed based on the bulky novel of “Crime

and Punishment” by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. The hotel is a perfect starting point for a couple of intense days in Russia’s multi-faceted cultural capital.

“crime and punishment” has been called St Peters-burg’s number one novel and is the perfect guide to this fascinating city. It has inspired many authors, artists and directors over the years and it has developed into some-thing of a Russian gem. Since last year, there has even been a hotel which has been completely dedicated to the novel which is both loved and discussed by many generations all over the world. “Crime and Punishment” has strong links with St Petersburg and is regarded by many as the ultimate guide to the city even if, at times, it can give a rather slightly unpleasant insight to the city and to the darker sides of its inhabitants.

Radisson Hotel Sonya acts as a surprising and inspiring cosmopolitan meeting point if you are seeking an extraordi-nary hotel experience. If you have tired of room categories which are arranged as to standard, size or floor plan then you’ll be pleasantly surprised when you discover that the categories have been given names like conscience, grace, rebirth and ego. The ego suite is for you if you want to provide yourself with accommodation offering some space for pleasure. Even the restaurant is inspired by the Russian author. The menu is created like a book, with its foreward, chapter and epilogue presenting dishes as if they were fas-cinating stories. Here, they’ve really developed the idea of storytelling and taken it to its extreme.

Visit the magnificent Hermitage St Petersburg has been bestowed with the nickname of “Venice of the North”. It’s a magnificent city and they didn’t hold back on the expense when it was built. They called upon the services of the best architects, who created a Eu-ropean metropolis on Russian soil. The city has been known by many names over the years with the most well-known being perhaps Leningrad, but it’s a town with many faces and has also been known as Petrograd and Peter-burg. St Petersburg is often called Russia’s cultural capital and the cultural greats such as Dostoyevsky, Pushkin and Tchaiko-vsky have all made their homes there. The river Neva flows through the city through its many various tributaries. When you walk around St Petersburg, you get the feeling of being in a great European city. The city has, in many respects, European characteristics, and for those interested in archi-tecture, walks can be both long and many as the city boasts many architectural splendours. At the doorstep to Radisson Hotel Sonya lie the city’s collective cultural offerings, as it is situated just ten minutes walk away from the Hermit-age and the Russian Museum, two of the world’s leading art galleries with extensive and impressive collections of in-terntional and Russian art.

In spite of the fact that St Petersburg has been exposed to many wars and revolutions over the years, many build-

ings are surprisingly well-preserved, among them the mag-nificent Winter Palace, the extremely lavish home of the tsar, Peter the Great. St Petersburg is characterised by wide streets and avenues. The most famous of these is Nevsky Prospect, which is several kilometers long. A good starting point for those who visit the city for the first time is to walk along a stretch of Nevsky Prospect where there is much to see. The most popular excursons in St Petersburg obviously go to the Hermitage. Second are those trips which take you on a round tour through the city where you get to see the Winter Palace, the Prince Vladimir Cathedral, the cruiser Aurora and the Church of our Saviour on Spilled Blood.

Accommodation surrounded by classic Russian cultureThe writing desks in the hotel rooms have been inspired by Dostoyevsky’s own writing desk, and the classic master-piece, as well as the traditional Russian style, make its pres-ence felt even in the most unexpected places in the hotel. In the lobby there is a gigantic book case, filled with “Crime and Punishment” translated into several different languag-

es. Those who feel compelled to brush up on this classic story can settle into the sofa which mostly reminds you of a gigantic Russian wooden box with motifs reflecting the story. Materials, colours, patterns and the whole decor have been carefully selected to convey a classic Russian feel.

When we were given the task of designing the interior to the Reval Radisson Hotel Sonya, we began by creating a storyline which our architects and designers could use. Everyone loves a really good story, the hotel personnel be-come more involved and it makes it easier to create the hotel’s personality.

Travellers seek new experiences, even with regard to their accommodation, when they are out on their travels. More and more try to find hotels which really do convey a feeling of the culture, history and identity of the destination, says Erik Nissen Johansen, creative director at the Gothenburg based architectural office of Stylt, who are responsible for the unique style and design of the hotel.

ou don’t need a car to get to this idyll by the sea as you can get here just as easily by train with the station only a quarter of an hour’s walk away. It’s just a case of hopping off the commuter train at Nynäs Havsbad station. After which a pleas-

ant ten minute’s walk through the villa quarter awaits you before you reach your destination, far out by the sea. Those who would prefer to take the car can get here easily and smoothly being only 45 minutes from Stockholm. When you get here it feels a little like you are stepping into an-other world, with open expanses, fresh sea air and a won-derful calm.

When the railway between Nynäsman and Stockholm was completed in 1905, many affluent Stockholm families found their way out to this holiday paradise. They began to build elegant summer houses on the picturesque island of Trehörning. In 1907, the Spa Hotel was opened, which attracted royalty, as well the celebrities of the day. In those days, treatments such as mud or pine-needle baths could be enjoyed accompanied by long walks and excellent meals at the restaurant. Today’s spa experience has been somewhat modernised but it is based on the same foundations; the healing waters, relaxing treatments, a large jet-stream pool, wood-fired sauna and two cosy seated-pools outside.

Yoga, pilates or a long walk along the beachNynäs spa has, of course, an extensive menu of facial and body treatments. If you want to give your face a little ex-tra attention then a facial luxury, an eighty- minute long treatment which really freshens up your face, could be a good investment. Facial luxury is described as “the ultimate luxury treatment for you if wish to have immediate results” with the aid of cleansing, peeling, face, hand and foot mas-sage with a special mask, adapted to your skin-type.

For those who want a real, deep cleansing can instead ask for a face detox, a fifty-minute long, peeling-based treat-ment which takes away all the deeper impurities. The body also gets its own treatment with, among other things, the help of the “calm sense”, a lovely, relaxing back massage with calming aromatic oils, which is rounded off with facial cleansing, mask and massage of the face and hands.

Many spas offer two-person or duo-cures, where you can enjoy a treatment with your partner or a friend. Nynäs Spa has decided to take the trend one step further by offering group treatments, where groups of four to six people can enjoy a refreshing body or facial treatment together. With a spa therapist, you’ll undertake a facial cure and get to learn how you take care of your skin and how you, yourself, can take care of your own complexion. While the facial mask is

at work, you’ll enjoy a glass of sparkling wine in the relaxa-tion lounge. After a few moment’s relaxation it’s time for a wonderful body pack. Choose between a deep-cleansing and peelable mud-pack, a relaxing aroma treatment, pen-etrating aloe vera or a purging marine detox.

After total relaxation in the spa lounge why not try a workout which will get the circulation going and cleanse the body completely. At the Nynäs Spa, you can choose be-tween yoga or pilates, or why not take a long, glorious walk by the sea.

Indulge in a spa ritual with a royal touch It was, in fact, King Oscar II who took the initiative in hav-ing the Nynäs Spa built. Among others, he took Gustav V, the princes Carl, Vilhelm and Bertil. The nephews of Alfred Nobel, Hjalmar and Ludvig also stayed here and enjoyed, amongst other things, seaweed scrubs and cold baths. When Moa Martinsson became famous, even she had con-sultations at the hotel. In honour of its founder, Nynäs Spa has created a spa ritual which is named after Oscar II.

The ritual is said to get the blood circulating, to give a clear and rosy complexion while at the same time injecting you with fresh energy. It is recommended as a start to your stay here as it can maximise the spa experience.

Enjoy shellfish and a luxurious brunchIf you visit Nynäs Spa over the weekend, the brunch is rec-ommended, which is served on Sunday mornings. A really good and well composed brunch guarantees a wonderful Sunday. At Nynäs Spa, the cuisine is geared towards mod-ern European food with the menu being characterised by the sea, farm and forest. At the brunch table you will find, among other things, various herrings, raw spiced salmon, american pancakes with maple syrup, scrambled egg and bacon, salads, quesedillas, cheese board and a real offering of deserts. The restaurant offers a seasonally adapted menu concentrating on modern European food based on selected raw ingredients characterised by the sea and lakes. Take the opportunity of enjoying shellfish or freshly caught fish while you are here.

Nynäs Spa is the perfect destination for you if you want a change of environment, to be fussed over and to find an oasis where you can expect top class in everything from the rooms to the food and spa-treatments. The distance from Stockholm is just right. Just far enough to feel that you are going away for the weekend while at the same time being just close enough to feel the distance is quite commutable.

hooked on golf

About 20 km south of Jönköping lies Hooks Herrgård (Coun-try Manor). In this region, there are several golf courses worth

playing on whichare gathered over a small area which gives you, as a golfer, maximum time on the course and minimal

time in the car. Hooks Country Manor really know the art in letting their guests enjoy the best in life. Over the last couple of years, for example, highly rated golf and whisky weekends

have been arranged.

ooks Country Manor lies majestically by Hoka Lake, close to Jönköping, 10km from the E4 motorway. At Hook Golf Club, they already began playing golf there a full 70 years ago.

As early as 1934, the area’s first golf course was laid by a group of energetic golf enthusiasts. Since then, this has been complemented with a further course and these have been extended and modernised since. Today, there are two 18-hole courses, each with a very different character and personality. Both the park course and the forest course, which have been created by the architect trio of Brude, Edberg and Sederholm, have a good reputation amongst Swedish golfers.

The open park course lies directly adjacent to Hoka Lake, while the forest course goes through dense forest land, sometimes over ancient moss ground, which offers a wonderful and almost magical and bewitching atmosphere. Here you can enjoy the characteristic natural scenary of Småland while at the same time playing on courses that are

of absolutely top class, regardless of whether you choose the park or the forest course or even if you try out both. Besides this, Hooks Golf Club also offers practice greens, bunker training and two driving ranges.

Combine rounds of golf with whisky tastingsOne of the advantages with Hook is its strategic position. Jönköping is easy to get to, regardless of the direction you are coming from. Anyone planning on getting a group of friends or colleagues together from different parts of the country for a golfing weekend or a tournament, will make a strategically wise choice by meeting up and playing golf right here.

Anyone wanting to add a little extra dimension to the round of golf at Hooks Golf Club can try out MyGolfTour, a live leaderboard tool which, it is said, makes playing golf a tad more professional and much more fun. With the aid of an app on your phone you can follow your competitors. The complete starting field, competition and leaderboard are,

namely, displayed in real time direct to your mobile, some-thing which is guaranteed to trigger competitive instincts.

At Hooks Golf Club and Hooks Country Manor, it is treated as an honour to preserve old traditions. One of them is whiskygolf which takes place twice a year. The estate ar-ranged its first trial of Whiskygolf in 2008, the gamble was such a great success that it was decided to make it a yearly event, in April and October. When excellent rounds of golf are combined with educational and rich-flavoured whisky tastings over a weekend. At the same time, you get the op-portunity to experience classic country manor life at one of Småland’s best preserved manor estates. Whiskygolf usually takes place over weekends. They are popular and it can be a good idea to book up well in advance.

A different experience of sand at Sand Golf Club in BankerydA quarter of an hour’s drive from Hook lies Götaström’s Golf Club, which offers a combined forest and park course in an

area of great natural beauty which is playable in all weath-ers. When other course are forced to close because of rain, you can still play at Göstaström’s Golf Club as the course is situated on sandy pine-covered heathland. At Götaström there is a full-sized range, putting green and a practice green as well as hazard plays such as bunker features. The course offers variety and fresh challenges once you’ve tried your luck at Hook Golf Club a few times.

When two of the world’s most famous golf course design-ers, Arthur Hills and Steve Forrest, visited Jönköping in the autumn of 2003, they started looking for an area with pure sandy soil in order to construct a golf course that was truly world class. When they found a unique sandy area they saw the possibilites in creating something which this part of Europe had never seen before. The result was an inland links course at Sand Golf Club in Bankeryd just outside Jönköping. Those who have never tried playing on sand be-fore have got an interesting experience waiting for them here. If you want to combine playing at both of Hook’s

golf courses and Götaström’s and Sand’s courses then you may well want to spend the night at Hook’s Country Manor, which dates back to the early 1700’s. During the last 80 years, the manor has functioned like an oasis of relaxation where you can spoil yourself with good food, excellent walks, golf and peace and quiet which means that you really can get away from everyday stress. Hook’s Country Manor of-fers a magical woodland course and an open park course.

If you are looking for variety and want to leave the golf clubs at home for a day then the whole kingdom of glass production lies before you just an hour away.

Fifty kilometers away lies Gränna with its many places of interest, among others, Visingö and the Andrémuseum. Those who are interested in hunting can also have the op-portunity of joining a hunting party.

designA really good hotel is much more than just a temporary abode

for you when you find yourself out on your travels. A hotel can also be a relaxing oasis, an inspirational environment

and a creative place to stay for those who crave new ideas and who have a desire to be surrounded by harmonious decor and design. The increasing interest in design amongst travellers is something that Profil Hotels has latched on to. Here, they concentrate on tasteful design with a Nordic accent down to

the smallest detail.

rofilHotels is a small and personal hotel chain who focus on design and tasteful experiences for all the senses. Profil-Hotels facilities are bold enough to go their own way in selecting a unique

language in form and an interior style which sur-prises the guests.

ProfilHotels can be found represented at seven Swedish sites and have chosen to retain a small-scale in order to be able to offer personally de-signed hotels, each with its own unique style. Careful design and a harmonious choice of col-ours influence us more than we think. it can make you more productive, balanced and can influence

your well-being in many different ways. One of the first things you notice as a ProfilHotel guest is the unmistakeable feel for detail. Here you’ll find it has really been thought out thoroughly in the work to create a unifying experience character-ised by tasteful design. Clear colours, genourous lighting and harmonious atmosphere combine to lower the pulse to a restful level and to offer you a well-needed recovery.

ProfilHotels offer two levels of accommodation at their hotels; white label which stands for a high basic level of service and design and black label, a premium level, where you can expect that little bit extra.

in stockholm, profilhotel run Hotel Riddargatan at Östermalm. Here can be found four suites with different themes for those seeking exclusive accommodation which matches their own personality and style. Hotel Riddargatan is a calm and relaxed oasis of design in a central position, just behind Dramaten. Here you can enjoy Scandinavian design where it really does show its best side. Every Pro-filHotel has its unique style, but a pronounced feeling for style and beauty unites them. A great alternative if you want

your stay at the hotel to be an experience for all the senses and who prefer a unique style rather than that of those uni-form, large hotel chains. ProfilHotels can even be found in Copenhagen, near Rådhusplatsen and the Tivoli. Here, modern functionality and design are united with timeless architecture. At the hotel can also be found the Library Bar, which has been chosen as one of the five best hotel bars in the world by the world-reknowned publicationl Forbes Magazine.

another profilhotel is hotel savoy in the heart of central Jönköping. Here technique, colour and form unite to create functional and exciting environments. Alongside the beautiful Sofia Church and only a stone’s throw away from the railway station, lies Hotel Savoy in Jönköping, a modern oasis which was opened in 2003. All 72 rooms are furnished with comfortable Carpe Diem beds and, needless to say, all have a free internet connection.

Larger groups who wish to meet up can choose to have a conference at Hotel Savoy which offers three modern and fully equipped conference rooms with a capacity of up to 80 people. Once you’ve checked in here you can be sure that the conference will progress just as it should do. After a long day of meetings, negotiations and presentations, its good to be able to withdraw and just let oneself be for a mo-ment. At Hotel Savoy, there’s a popular relaxation lounge with bubble pool and sauna which allows you to gather your thoughts and just unwind for a moment. Here you’ll also find a gym and a large range of spa treatments for those who want to take well-being to another level.

Should you want to enjoy a good beer or whisky after work then you won’t need to go very far. That’s because, ad-

jacent to the hotel, you’ll find the pub “Pipes of Scotland”, offering a large range of beers and whiskys with a genuine Scottish atmosphere. There are 58 varieties of whisky on offer for those who want to try something new. Those who fancy a bite to eat can try the modern brasserie, Sofiehof, which lies close by and can offer you a range of Swedish and international classics.

Those guests who come to Hotel Savoy, which is often described as Jönköping’s most modern and design-inspired hotel, and who like to swing a golf club then they’ve come to the right place. Jönköping has been transformed over the years to a real Mecca for golfers as over a relatively small area can be found many high class courses. Hotel Savoy offers three levels of golf packages, with all of them giving you the possibiltiy to play at SkinnareboGolf`&CountryClub; a beautiful course surrounded by forest and in excel-lent condition. This 18-hole course, set in a historic manor-estate environment is guaranteed to give you a challenge. There is also a short, “pay-and-play”, 9-hole course with a large practice area and driving range with 30 tees.

he mighty flowing river of the Torne älven is the source. From this river, the ice hotel borrows its ice. It’s put into cold storage and in December the hotel is created.

Today’s hotel is world famous for its unique concept, its unparralled experience of nature and, in recent years, its fantastic artworks in ice.

The Ice Hotel is one of our century’s most famous Swed-ish tourist symbols. During the weekend, we meet enthusiatic travellers from Brazil, South Africa, Australia, Japan, Spain and some Swedes. A global meeting place for natural experi-ences. But also for weddings. Around 150 marriages and 20 or so Christenings are held each year in the glistening Ice Church with its beautiful and pure sacred atmosphere.

As a guest, you can chose to have either cold or warm accom-modation. We are bold and on checking out we get a certificate to say that we have survived the cold accommodation. To stay at the Ice Hotel is an experience which cannot be compared to any other hotel experience. It reminds you a little of the camp-ing adventures you had as a child but in a colder environment.

Thanks to artists and architects who come from all corners of the world, around 20 unique rooms of art are created, not only to stay in, but also to visit. The hotel becomes a living art gal-lery. The ice-art unites artists and all its visitors in this unique setting where art, nature and architecture all come together. The hotel is a temporary resting home for the river’s frozen ice water which, in the Spring, melts away and returns to its source of the River Torne.

During our weekend, with it going down to -25C, we set off on our scooters and visit a Lapp/reindeer gathering point where we learn more about the Lapp culture, ride a sled pulled by reindeers and eat roasted venison in “tunnbröd” cooked over an open fire.

Lunch is served in the hotel’s restaurant where local speci-alities are brought out on ice plates – beautiful to behold and very classy!

We live at ”Gotham on Ice”, a suite created by the interior designer, Dennis Rolland and the artist Andre Landeros Michel from New York, where we get to experience Art deco glamour and elegance in ice-form. Diamonds of ice disguised as windows, walls of snow which gleam and Manhattan’s glittering skyline takes us back to a time when top hats and tails were the order of the day. American TV and press followed the men with great interest and the construction process here among the masses of ice in December 2009.

This is Dennis and Andrew’s first ice suite but we are sure we are going to see more from them in Jukkasjärvi.

check-in this watchout!

When Nymans Ur recently arranged Sweden’s first actual trade fair for timepieces and ornaments for the luxury sector, held at Spegelsalen in the Grand Hotel in Stockholm, Rolex took the opportunity to launch their most expensive model ever. Jaeger-LeCoultre and Breguet seized the occasion to showcase the world

première of no less than four new fantastic watches.

many have tried before, but it was Nymans Ur who were the first to get all the top labels to exhibit their lat-est models together in Sweden. There weren’t many who raised their eyebrows to the fact that it was Nymans Ur itself who managed to bring this about, be-ing that they are Scandinavia’s leading retailer of quality timepieces. Howev-er, something which did raise several eyebrows was the spectacular models which were put on display by, among others, Rolex, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Breguet during the two days of the Watchout Evening-trade fair.

Rolex displayed their latest, and also their most expensive watch design ever for the first time; the Oyster Perpetual Submariner Emerald. Produced in 18 carat white gold and decorated with a total of 44 emeralds at 2.33 carats and awhole1,143diamondsof6.11carats(and even 12 baguettes) making this, for the moment, the world’s most expen-sive watch. This beauty, of which only a few examples have been produced, command a price of € 298 000.Thenextworldpremièrewaspresent-

ed by Jeager-LeCoultre who released The Master Compressor Extreme LAB 2 at the fair. A watch designed to han-dle the most extreme of environments with its titanium case, its scratch-proof glass and a bezel produced from high-tec zirconium ceramic. Something which was proved when three Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner Emerald

experienced climbers carried out a test in 2009 and then, with the help of the watch’s chronograph with a GMT-func-tion, ascended one of Mount Everest’s most challenging peaks which they then named “Mount Antoine LeCoultre”.

With no less than four hot, new mod-els, Breguet attracted a great deal of attention. The most beautiful, and the one which captured the most gazes, was the Reine de Naples, automatic strike. On each hour, the two hammers strike six discreet chimes to mark the time. This subtle beauty has been decorated and engraved by hand with diamonds against a background of light sapphire. From the underside can be seen a dove through the clear, white back casing of sapphire. The watch lives more than a little up to Nicholas G. Heyek’s famous description of the watchmaker, “Breguet is the perfect meeting of beauty and ad-vanced technology”.

voyages extraordinairesquality is back. Quality and knowledge about food, wine, culture and travel is very important.

Thanks to ”Mad Men” we all dress up stylish. Your signature is shown in the way you eat, where you eat, what watches you have, how you dress, how you travel and where you stay – both domestic and abroad.

First Class Magazine takes you all around the globe, new hotels open up and old hotels are face lifted. The art of hotel innovation is flourishing and seems never ending. This fall we all want to go to new Le Royal Monceau in Paris where our überfavourite Philippe Starck is behind the design of the rooms. And on October 10th was the big reopening of The Savoy in London.

In September we touched down in Paris and the 25th Biennale des Antiquaires. The big trend was contemporary art and especially made top signature fine jewellery.OurFavouriteVanCleef&Arpels showed their extreme elegant skills and style in an

exhibition ”Voyages Extraordinaires”, echoing the works of Jules Verne. Cartier revealed 78 new pieces of high jewellery. Almost everything sold before opening, even before” preview, “extraordinaire”.

In Paris also Takashi Murakami showed his grand exhibition at Chateau de Versailles. It is a must before this exhibition will go to Doha, Qatar.

Luxury is time,” out to lunch” from our digital world, no noise and no blackberry, no emails, no mobile phone. We look for experiences with nature and local culture. There are fantastic getaways and we all want to find the Worlds last Eden’s.

The Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi – globetrotters from all corners of the world come here to experience nature and local culture. If you can build a hotel of snow and ice in a village 200 kilometres above the Arctic Circle, which strikes the world with amazement – nothing is im-possible Thanks to Yngve Bergqvist and his team, the Ice hotel is one of the musts in life.

There is an older generation-healthy and wealthy – with more time to travel for an ex-tended long season. They look for new and exotic experiences. For those in search of more than just a luxurious hotel room, there is a new hot trend to live in a private villa a dream of the perfect home away from home. The Hideaways Club takes us to the next level, where all hassles around owning a house are taken away. Here you just relax, time for a quality stay with large family or several friends in different villas with various numbers of bedrooms at the nicest places on earth.

After a perfect summer filled with beach getaways and sailing we are now all lusting for an exotic escape where we can recharge the batteries. Africa, Brazil, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan are trendy for the season. Our favourite Istanbul is still on the edge.

Best of luck in finding your own tracks of Jules Verne!
