FIRE PROTECTION TANKS
Adamson Fire Protection Tanks are hydropneumatic tanks specifically designed for use in private fire protection systems. All tanks in this category are designed, manufactured, tested, and inspected in accordance with recommendations of the National Fire Protection Association.
Questions frequently arise concerning the NFPA requirements and we have therefore listed below excerpts from the latest addition of the NFPA pamphlet giving information as to vessel design, and construction of fire protection vessels.
Additional information including the latest pamphlet can be obtained from the National Fire Protection Association, International. 1 Batterymarch Park, P.O. Box 9101, Quincy, MA 02269-9101 USA.
SPECIFICATIONSService -"Pressure Tanks shall be used only as a supply to automatic sprinkler systems, unless otherwise approved by the inspection department having jurisdiction."
Capacity -"The capacity shall be as approved by the inspection department having jurisdiction. For tanks supplying sprinkler systems, see the current Standards for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems. The capacity is the total contents, both air and water, in the cylinder." This capacity will be the tank volume contained in dimension OAL as shown on page 2.
Air Pressure and Water Level -"Unless otherwise approved by the inspection department having jurisdiction, the tank shall be kept two-thirds full of water, and an air pressure of at least 75 pounds per square inch by the gauge, shall be maintained. As the last of the water leaves the pressure tank, the residual pressure shown on the gauge shall not be less than zero, and shall be sufficient to give not less than 15 lb. pressure at the highest sprinkler under the main roof of the building."
Construction - ". . . tanks shall be constructed in accordance with the current Rules for the Construction of Unfired Pressure Vessels, Section VIII of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Boiler Construction Code." ". . . All stamps required by A.S.M.E. specifications shall be applied." Corrosion allowance will be provided as required by the A.S.M.E. Code.
Testing - Pressure tanks will be tested to 1.3 times the working pressure as prescribed under Section VIII of the A.S.M.E. Code. In addition to the A.S.M.E. test, each pressure tank shall be filled two-thirds full and tested at the normal working pressure with all valves closed, and shall not lose more than one-half pound pressure in 24 -hours. A certificate signed by the manufacturer shall be filed with the inspection department having jurisdiction, certifying that the fore-going tests have been made.
Painting - After sandblasting both interior and exterior surfaces shall be shop primed in accordance with NFPA 22. Finish paint as specified.
Supports - A support must be located near each end of the tank. ASME Code strongly reccommends using only two saddlesper tank.
Refer to page 3 for ADAMSON recommendations of saddle spacing.
Marking - In addition to stamps required by A.S.M.E. specifications, the tanks must be stamped to indicate the diameter, shell length, and capacity. A plate indicating "2/3 capacity line" must be located behind the gauge glass.
SELECTIONThe volume of water required to supply the sprinkler system must be determined in accordance with the fire protection regulations, as stated above under CAPACITY. After the required volume has been established, the corresponding tank size can be selected from page 2.
EXAMPLE - Assume 3000 gallons is the tank capacity required for the system. Refer to page 2, locate 3000 gallons ACTUAL CAPACITY, and select (48" x W-2" OA) (54" x 26'-5" OA), or (60" x 21'-7" OA). The shell length (SL) indicated in the table will enable a fitting clearance dimension check.
