Is Your Fire Prevention ProgramReady to Go?

ANNOUNCEMENTS

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Summer is over and students andteachers have returned to school foranother exciting year of education. Nowis the time to meet with your fire preven-tion committee to review what you aregoing to do to educate the kids on theimportance of fire safety.

Fire safety programs should be keptsimple. Have you ever thought of howmuch information a child can retain in a45-minute lesson? Keep in mind thatevery child is unique and will learn intheir own way and at their own pace. Iencourage you to visit www.pbs.org/par-ents/goingtoschool/grade_by_grade.htm.This Website gives you some insight onhow kids learn. Teachers spend yearsperfecting their craft. Don’t be afraid toask the teacher for recommendations onworking with specific groups of students. As a teacher of Fire Safety, you can ben-efit from understanding how children

learn. At an early age, explaining the dif-ference between a carbon monoxidedetector and a smoke alarm can beextremely confusing. Keep it simple bymaking sure the kids understand thatwhen they hear the beep coming fromany detector or alarm, they need torespond in a specific way. Older childrenmight enjoy a scientific lesson on the dif-ferences between the two detectors.Know your audience.

Our goal is to educate and to re-edu-cate people on the basic principals of firesafety in the home. Whether you do it atthe school or at the firehouse, rememberthe knowledge that you instill in childrenon the topic of fire safety will stay withthem for the rest of their lives. A success-ful education about fire safety is upto you. The Fire Safety EducatorsAssociations say it best, fight firesthrough education.

Not Clean Enough in Hackensack?

On July 22, 2012, Hackensack Fire Department, E-5, R-1 and E-4with their Zodiac, and Deputy 2, D/C Fred Longobardi, respondedto a reported "car in the river" behind a car wash on River andAnderson Streets. On arrival units confirmed that an elderlywoman had driven her car, a Ford Escort wagon, into the riverwhile exiting the car wash. An employee and a customer of the carwash jumped into the river and removed the woman prior to arrival

of emergency services. She was evaluated by EMS and found to notbe suffering any injuries. The FD marine unit checked the car toconfirm that no other occupants remained and then secured thevehicle so that it would not be swept downriver. Fire units thenassisted a tow company with hooking up and removing the vehicle. The Bergen County Haz-mat response team also responded.

Mays Landing Demo a Hit

Pastor Jim Fulleylove, Jr., of the Mays Landing Baptist Churchcalled Chief Dave Connelly of the Mays Landing Volunteer FireCompany and asked if the fire department would be interested inputting on a simulated rescue during their Bible camp week, whichhad the theme “Jesus to the Rescue.” On Thursday, August 2, 2012,Engine 1812 arrived and was parked in the rear for the kids toobserve … and to cause a distraction as two fog/smoke machineswere used to smoke up the main part of the church. After the smokewas heavy enough, a couple of windows were opened giving it thelook of an actual fire. Firefighters arrived with lights and sirens to

the chants of the children outside saying “firemen help us, firemenhelp us.” Ladder 1815 and Tender 1819 arrived and crews from theladder entered to search for a rescue dummy. The crew of Tender1819 also stretched a line and simulated entering. A tender washooked into the ladder, which placed its ladder pipe in service intothe field next to the church. At the end of the program all of the chil-dren were able to use the booster hose to knock down wooden“flames.” The demo was a big hit for all and the children were alsoable to cool off by running under the fog pattern coming from theladder pipe. - Fire News photos by Ken Badger
