Orientation After Sunday Service In December
If you’re new to First Christian, drop in after Sunday service for a 15 minute Orientation
session. We hold them every Sunday after each service in the North Building Conference
Room – it’s your chance to personally meet Lead Pastor Tony Nelson and other church
leaders. You’ll hear about our vision, get an idea of what ministries we offer, and start
connecting with people here at FCC. Drop by the Information Window in the Lobby for
directions.
WORSHIP FULLY SPEND LESS GIVE MORE LOVE ALL
Are you tired of how consumerism has stolen the soul
of Christmas? This year, take a stand! Join the ground-
swell of Christ-followers who are choosing to make
Christmas what it should be — a joyous celebration of
Jesus’ birth that enriches our hearts and the world
around us, not a retail circus that depletes our pocket-
books and defeats our spirits.
Advent Conspiracy shows you how to substitute con-
sumption with compassion by practicing four simple,
but powerful, countercultural concepts:
WORSHIP FULLY ~ because Christmas begins and ends with Jesus!
SPEND LESS ~ and free your resources for things that truly matter.
GIVE MORE ~ of your presence: your hands, your words, your time, your heart
LOVE ALL ~ the poor, the forgotten, the marginalized, the sick, in ways that make a
difference.

of meeting their needs better and offer-
ing them a closer connection with our

Sometimes as churches grow, time goes on, and needs and circumstances change, a part of a ministry that was once needed may not be necessary any-more and other needs may need to be met. The women of First Christian Church are eager, ready, and more than willing to do God’s work. We do not know what the future will hold, but we do know that with God on our side there is no obstacle too big for us to conquer. Stay tuned!! Teri Smith 610-1003
If you are not already making Women's Ministry a matter of prayer, start now. It will make a huge difference not only in the outcome of particular events but also in our attitude as we go about working with Women's Ministry.
• Pray specifics, such as for projects, certain goals to be met, and particular events.
• Pray for choices as to what spiritual direction we need to focus on.
• Pray for an impact on the church and community from your Women's Ministry.

one speaks to you or tells you what to do. You're alone, unsure of yourself, and more than anx-ious. You feel like an unwanted intruder in a club to which you don't belong. Visitors coming back depends on connecting with the church (from a human point of view anyway.) Greeters help people con-nect! Being a church Greeter is not difficult and it's one way for everyone to participate in the greater ministry of the church. It couldn’t be easier. All you have to do is call Rick and say, "I want to be a greeter.”
The Welcome Ministry is looking for greeters to serve at Christmas Services. Imagine that you are going some-place for the first time. You're probably not sure where you're go-ing or who to talk to when you get there. Somehow you manage to get to the right place and even find the front door. There are a lot of people standing around talking to one an-other, obviously friends or at least acquaintances. As you walk in, sev-eral people glance at you then re-turn to their conversations, but no
Here’s how it works…. • Arrive at church 20 minutes
before the service at which you're scheduled to greet.
• Meet Rick Smith at the table
next to the main office door. • Maintain your assigned greet-
ing position. • Be awake, friendly, welcom-
ing and assist everyone who needs help.

Tree of Sharing—Deadline Dec. 13
With Christmas fast approaching, Alongside Ministries will be
continuing the tradition of the helping families within our church.
Tree of Sharing is a time to help our church families with gifts and
food baskets. This is a great opportunity as a church family to come
together and help those who may be less fortunate than yourself. If
your small group or family is looking for a way to serve this Christmas
please contact Kim.
The Tree with tags and food list will be in the foyer thru De-
cember 13. Food, gifts and monetary donations can be dropped off at the church office
until December 13. Gifts and food baskets will be ready for pick up on December 17. To
make this possible we are asking that all gifts, food and donations be turned in by the due
date of December 13. Please be sure to attach the tag to the gifts.
If you know a family in the church that could use some help or are a family that
needs help please contact Kim Brackett no later than December 3rd in order for us to
get tags on the tree. All families are kept confidential. No names will be taken after the
December 3rd deadline.

“THAT’S THE GOOD NEWS!”
This December, we invite you to put the world on hold and join us on an imaginary trip to the little town of Pinck-ney, Nebraska. For years, Will Masterson a friendly down-home newscaster, has kept his community informed through “Wheat Radio.” But now, after losing his beloved wife of 40 years, Will’s world has fallen apart leaving him unable to cope with the news, a daily barrage of senseless murders, destruction and crime. Songs about joy and peace on earth seem contrived and meaningless until through the sweet, enduring , love of his granddaugh-ter Annie, her parents Lynn & Aaron and Will’s studio engineer Tucker, Will is reminded that a Savior has been born, bringing hope into our fallen world, and that ,well...That’s the Good News! This Musical will be just over an hour in length and brings together the talents of several soloists, 13 actors and a choir of about 50 voices! You will hear a song performed by a brand new male quartet and solos from Jane Henry, Olivia Long, Kelly Johnson, Carla Johnson, Abby Johnson, Kristine Oliver, Sam Richardson and more. Christmas. Just the word conjures up all kinds of im-ages and emotions for each of us. Most of us have be-come so familiar with the story of Joseph and Mary and baby Jesus that there isn’t much mystery left in it for us. You and I both know that almost everyone in America knows the Christmas story. We know it so well that most of us probably yawn through the re-telling… angels, shepherds, wise men… blah, blah, blah. Do something different this year. Smell the barn. I’m serious. Hear the cow chew-ing its cud. No kidding. Get right in the place where Je-sus was born. Put yourself in the story [this is actually an ancient Benedictine practice of scripture study]. Close your eyes and walk the streets of Bethlehem filled with families coming from near and far for the census. Smell the dust, sense the heat of the crowds, listen to
the shouts of the vendors as they try to earn another dol-lar. And look out where you’re stepping, ‘cause there’s donkey “apples” all over the place! As you walk the narrow crowded streets, look for the key players. There’s the inn keeper who just booked his last room and turns away a pregnant teen and her lanky boyfriend. He probably did-n’t want them in his estab-lishment anyway. Notice her swollen belly as she dis-mounts and tries to find a comfortable position. Maybe she grimaces in pain as the first set of labor pains begin. Follow these two chosen ones to the cave where Jo-seph tried to make do. Watch him grab some clean straw for Mary to sit on while he tidied up as best he could. Notice how he’s try-ing to fake being strong and in charge but the sweat beads on his forehead give away his anxiety about deliv-
ering a child… after-all he’s not a midwife. As you take in all the odious-ness of the scene, think to yourself, what was God up to then? Then take one more moment and ask, “What is God up to now?” You might find a new mystery in the answer that will bring new life into an old story. I know it did for me. Blessed to Be a Blessing, Pastor Tony P.S. Disa and I would like to wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas.

Treasurer’s Report
If I make a contribution in
early January 2019, can I
claim it on my 2009 taxes?
No, charitable contributions
must be claimed inn the year in
which they are delivered.
Example: Mary writes a check
to her church on December 31,
2009, and deposits it in the
church offering on January 1,
2010. Her check is not deducti-
ble on her 2010 tax return.
If I mail my contribution in
December 2009, but it does-
n’t reach my church until
January, 2010, for which
year should I claim it? On
your 2009 tax return. A check
that is mailed to a charity is
deductible in the year the check
is mailed (and postmarked),
even if it is received early in the
year.
Example: Mary mails (and
postmarks) her check in Decem-
ber 2009. Her church doesn’t
receive the check until January
2010. The check is deductible
on Mary’s 2009 tax return.
I designated my contribu-
tion to the church benevo-
lence fund. Is it deductible?
That depends. “Designated
contributions” are those made to
a church for a specified purpose.
If the purpose is an approved
project or program of the
church, you can deduct the con-
tribution.
Example: Your $100 gift des-
ignation the church benevolence
fund is deductible. However, if
you designated that your contri-
bution be spent on an individual,
then no deduction is allowed—
unless the church exercises full
control over the donated funds.
Example: You donated $200 to
the church and instruct the
church treasurer to give the
$200 to a specified needy family
in the church. The contribution
is not tax deductible.
Contributions to a church mis-
sions agency that designate a
particular missionary may be
tax-deductible if the church or
missions agency exercises full
administrative and accounting
control over the contribution and
ensures they are spent in fur-
therance of the church’s mis-
sion.
Example: You donate $75 to a
denominational missions agency
and specify a particular mis-
sionary as the recipient. This
contribution is tax-deductible,
even though it names a mission-
ary, so long as the missions
agency has full administrative
and accounting control over the
funds.
What kind of records do I
need to prove I made a con-
tribution?
For individual cash contribu-
tions of $250 or more:
Cancelled checks cannot be
used to substantiate your gift.
You must receive a written re-
ceipt from your church that indi-
cates whether you received
goods or services for your con-
tributions (and if so, the value of
the goods or services received).
If you received no goods or
services for the contributions,
than the receipt must say so or
indicate that only “intangible
religious benefits” were re-
ceived. If you’ve made individual
contributions of $250 or more,
don’t file your federal income
tax return until you receive a
contribution statement from
your church that satisfies these
requirements. Otherwise, your
contributions may not be de-
ductible.
NOTE:
Church contribtuition tax
receipts will be mailed out
by January 15, 2010.
If you don’t you are precluded from deducting
the loss on your income tax return. In that
case, selling the stock first and donating the
proceeds is a better tax save.
Source: The Kipling Tax Letter
Donate appreciated stock the correct way:
If you have owned the shares for over a
year, you can deduct the full value without
paying tax on the appreciation. That’s a
win-win situation. But, don’t donate any
stock that has fallen in value.

PeaceMeal: Food for Thought on Biblical Peacemaking
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
IF, IF, IF...
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other... Ephesians 4:32
The best way to ruin a confession is to use words that shift the blame to others or that
appear to minimize or excuse your guilt. The most common way to do this is to say,
"I'm sorry if I've done something to upset you." The word if ruins this confession, be-
cause it implies that you do not know whether or not you did wrong. The message you
are communicating is this: "Obviously you're upset about something. I don't know that I
have done anything wrong, but just to get you off my back I'll give you a token apol-
ogy."
Adapted from The Peacemaker: A Biblical Guide to Resolving Personal Conflict

by Ken Sande, Updated Edition (Grand Rapids, Baker Books, 2003) p. 127.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
How often does if show up in your confessions?
A great way to ruin your engine on your car? Never, ever change the oil. A sure-fire way
to ruin your credit rating? Never, ever pay your bills on time. What about ruining your
reputation at work? Never, ever keep your appointments. And the best way to ruin a
confession? Each and every time, use the word "if."
Ken reminds us of the power of this little two-letter word. Too many times, it leads to
an empty confession. All the words may be right and proper (I'm sorry), but the heart is
missing. And anything without a heart is usually dead, good for nothing. The word
"confess" means "to agree with" -- you're agreeing that you've done something wrong. If
you're not ready to agree, then don't confess. Because that ruins everything.
