The Internet Age has revolutionized the distribution of news and information, which is no longer the exclusive

domain of often strictly controlled agents of an organized global media. News agencies, newspapers, TV and radio

stations now share the ether with the so-called social media, where Facebook and Twitter users can play at being

real-life journalists and opinion-makers. Play is the right word, for their contributions to the daily mass of news and

information can be maliciously or irresponsibly false. The media world has become a rumour factory, where no

quality control exists. Here are examples of reports that have appeared so far on social media sites. Try and detect

which were true and which were false:

The MCULT site reported, with a picture, that

North Korean leader Kim Jeong Un faced a

coup detat because he was consuming military

provisions. The report was widely distributed

even though it was False.Kim Jeong Un threatened to attack the US with

nuclear missiles, causing a dangerous crisis in

the Korean peninsula region. True.

Omar Borkan Al Gala, a Canada-based photog-

rapher, model and actor and three friends were

reported widely in the Western media to have

been deported from Saudi Arabia, where they

were attending a cultural Janadriyah festival,

because they were too handsome. False.Religious police raided the Janadriyah festival in

an effort to stop a performance by a female

singer, Aryam. The police had to withdrawand

there was no involvement in the incident by

Omar Borkan Al Gala. True.

The world would end on December 21, 2012,

according to a Mayan calendars prediction that was

believed by thousands of anxious people around the

world. False.Russian President Vladimir Putin issued his own

prediction, saying the world would end after a further

7 billion years, a long way away from its present age

of 4.5 million years. True.

Back in Thailand, he founded the Department of Media Arts and Design of Chiang Mai Universitys Faculty of Fine Arts. His department aims to teach photographic artistry while also preparing students for a professional career.Khun Kan is so enthusiastic about his subject and such a selfless teacher that he devoted his experience and knowledge to the faculty in an honorary capacity.His sometimes controversial work seeks to portray social reality in an artistic medium.I want to make image creators not photographers, he says. Taking a photo itself is not interesting but the story that a photo tells us makes it more interesting.

Wind beneath the wings of people behind the lens

The widespread possession of top-qual i ty cameras among the normal public makes the work of professional photographers harder, according to Assada Porananont, assistant professor at Chiang Mai Universitys Fine Arts Faculty.Photographers these days have to work hard because there are many competitors, says Khun Assada, who also goes by the name Ajarn Por.Everyone now has a camera; in some cases the camera is better than the photographer. Photography is not only about cameras or tech-nique. At the university level, studies in this field include context, which embraces social science, history, philosophy, where the student learns more about the issue of photography. The photographers own perspective is important, Ajarn Por maintains. Separate styles merge, with documentary footage being used for adver-tisements and contemporary art employs movie material.Ajarn Pors interest in photography dates back to his student days. After obtaining his BA degree, he studied the subject at Londons College of Printing and then graduated with an MA degree in Image and Communications at the University of Londons Goldsmiths College.

Bunserm SatrapaiFifty-year-old technology produced this historic photograph of Chiang Mai and its iron bridge. It was taken from a helicopter

by Bunserm Satrapai in 1963. Khun Bunserm is now 83 years

old and still an active photographer, who has probably the best

collection of historic Chiang Mai images in existence.

This photo was taken from a helicopter in the year 1963, he told

us. It is a view of the iron bridge which is sometimes identified

incorrectly as the Ta Phae Bridge.

Although it is a black and white photograph,

Chiang Mai appears as a very green city in those daysits no small wonder that 700

years previously Chiang Mais founder and first king named it his forest city.

Janjira Intharasak or Jiwis one of the most well-known landscape photographers who falls in love with Doi Angkang area.

She confesses that sometimes shes disappointed by the view because of the

quality of the light. But if you have patience and know how to wait then nature

always provide its miracle for us, she says.

This is a memorable photo that has two symbols of Chiang Mai, Three Kings Monument and red taxi. This year Tabebuia trees are blooming beautifully at the monument giving color to the dry season of this city.

Freshly graduated from the Department of Photo Graphic Arts, Fine Arts Faculty, Chiang Mai University, Khun Mana belongs to a generation of photographers employing a new style of work, concentrating on documentary topics.

She selected a photo with details she believes are representative of Chiang Mai, such as flowery bed sheets,

ethnic bags and an ice-cream bike manned by a vendor who is more like a Buddha image seller than an ice-cream

man. Different but still in harmonythats the current style of Chiang Mai.

Khun Mana says Chiang Mai is a rapidly growing city of cultural diversity with a simple local lifestyle. For her, the ice-cream bike is a representation of the taste of local people.

that romantic hue are present in the fine

Chiang Mais local residents looking for a new restaurant to try often avoid the citys tourist areas in the belief that

theyll only find farang food and prices

to match. But they miss out on some excellent establishments where they would feel at home with the menuand

its prices. We found two to recommend:

This bistro-style restaurant is in the De Naga Hotel,

so top quality is guaranteed. The barbecued pork ribs

come with mashed pumpkin, while more traditional dishes include massaman curry with roti, Tomyam Soba

Noodles Live jazz is featured from 8 PM on Saturdays

and Sundays.

Loi Kroh Road, lined mostly with farang-filled bars and

massage joints, isnt well known for quality, reasonably -priced restaurants, but this small, chic establishment

is a notable exception. The menu features tasty dishes such as egg plant roll, oven-baked clams with butter

sauce, grilled sea bass and seafood pasta in a white

wine reduction. A walk-in wine room offers the opportunity to select just the right vintagethe French

Cabernet is especially recommended.
