What Has Proven to be Most Helpful to Me

Androgogy – adult learning theory

Principles of multimedia design (Clark & Mayer)

The value of group collaboration and teamwork

Dr. Butler’s “permission” to fit the design to the audience

What I’ve learned about ID in the ‘real’ world:

If you build it, they will come --but they may not stay!

ID in real life is seldom prescriptive and sequential. It’s messy and unpredictable.

Find your balance between what you know about ID and ‘appeasing the gods’

Always keep the end user in mind! The target is genuine learning or changed behavior, not an attractive product that ticks all the design boxes.

My advice to a new instructional designer….

Build your professional network.• Share advice and support with classmates and instructors now

and colleagues later• Online forums, conferences, webinars, etc. are great for building your network• Instructional designers are a generous, sharing, collaborative group!

Stay current on research, trends, and tools (i.e., ADDIE, Agile, SAM, gamification, badges). It’s a moving target!

“If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you!” shared by Zig Ziglar

Keep learning!

What I’m learning now (incidentally: the big topics at e-Learning Guild 2014)• Using stories to create engagement• The power of questions • How gamification can be used in higher-ed and e-Learning• How to build it so they WANT to stay• How to balance design theories, SME requests, boss’ directives, budget

(what budget?!), and time to come up with courses that make a difference and meet the deadlines!
