house local tree inventory and IPED data enabling access & analysis of pest risk, trends, and mgmt needs at multiple scales.

• UFORHIC provides links and user information on I-Tree tools, pest alerts, and other pest & Urban FH information. (FS FHP, States DNR)

Identifying Unknowns… Public outreach networks highlight proper contacts to report unknown pests for proper identification. (NIFA, FS FHP, States DNR & DOA)

Prioritized Monitoring.. Commodity shipping and host risk analysis can identify priority communities for integrated monitoring. (APHIS, FS-R, States –DOA, Universities)

Three elements: ** Must be prepared to be responsive to this increased public input.

** A clear contact point and prescreening capacity before samples go to NPDN is key.

** Need the NPDN partnership established.

Seven Steps to Building a better Wall


1. Prioritize where to focus UFHM efforts in your State.

2. Contact those communities, convince them it is in THEIR best interest to be a part of the coordinated statewide effort.

3. Determine their current inventory processes, if none, help them initiate one (I-Tree). If some financial assistance is needed, consider …State, UCF, Redesign, other Agency grants, etc.

4. Ensure a pest protocol is part of all inventories…if I-Tree, use I-PED.…if not…look for other options…it could be training and pocket ID cards. Have who ever is looking at trees (inventory/mtc crews) priority pest symptom trained.

5. Coordinate individual community inventories for larger prevention and response planning. UFORHIC can help avoid the cost of inventing and maintaining a system on your own…it will also be a central source of forest health information useful to your communities…it is going to be free…take advantage of it.

6. Engage the public, Statewide…first detector training can help train trainers, Locally…help your priority communities engage their publics…. Together… determine how to best engage the public.

7. Establish a coordinated unknown pest reporting network that is visible and available to the public.… the many more eyes will help earlier detection become a reality.
