ABSTRACT: In the 1920s, Henry Ford was searching for a way to
circumvent the British monopoly on rubber. To accomplish
this goal, he established two rubber plantations in the
Brazilian jungle, Fordlandia and Belterra, both of which
operated under the name Companhia Ford Industrial do
Brasil. Work began on these projects in 1926, with the
town of Fordlandia founded in 1928 and Belterra in 1934.
Ultimately, the two plantations were not successful, with
Henry Ford II selling all of the land back to the Brazilian
government in 1945. The Companhia Ford Industrial do
Brasil Records contains photographs, correspondence,
reports, accounting data, and employee information
pertaining to the operations.
