The company is also endingproduction of its "high end" lineand trimming the variety of Crocstyles by 30 to 40% in hopes ofstaving off extinction.

But other New Yorkers especially moms were eagerto bemoan the loss of theirfavorite footwear.

“My 8yearold son doesn’t likebeing confined by sneakers andboots,” said Ruby Santana, 28,from Inwood. “In the summer hewears his SpiderMan Crocseveryday, and in the otherseasons he wears the ones withfleece.”

Crocs aren’t just for kids esteemed cooks also appreciatethe ergonomic shoes.

“Being in the kitchen all day means being on your feet, running up and downstairs and lifting a lot of heavy things. You need comfortable shoes like Crocs,”said Thiago Silva, corporate pastry chef to the EMM Group.

Still, city chefs like Craig Wallen of the Upper West Side's Cesca areunimpressed by Malto Mario’s clog.

"I wore Crocs for years until I started slipping in them at work and my kneesand back were feeling the pain," he said. "Downsizing production of Crocs is agood thing if they focus on improving quality."

Wallen aside, Crocs' price and durability will likely keep them off theendangered species list.

"I can just hose them down when they get too cruddy, unlike other brands,"said Coby Farrow, executive chef of BLT Prime. "Knowing that they will becutting back production, I'm sure I'll buy a pair or two just as backups."
