As a government agency with responsibility ordelivering sustainable communities, Landcomis aware o the critical role that public openspace plays in developing and nurturing thosecommunities. The Open Space Design Guidelineshave been developed to help deliver the best

possible outcomes or open space. The results, wehope, will be places that are much loved, well usedand greatly enjoyed.

The objectives of the guidelines are:

To demonstrate our commitment to bestpractice in open space planning and design.

To engender shared values within Landcom asto what defnes best practice in open spacedesign and delivery.

To demonstrate a consistent, accountable andtransparent process or open space design,delivery, management, maintenance and

handover to all o our partners and stakeholdersin that process.

To provide a ramework upon which moredetailed design and delivery processes can bebuilt.

These guidelines ocus on the typical orms o publicopen space or which Landcom is responsible ordelivery through its development projects. Theseinclude parks ranging in size rom 0.5 to 2 Ha ormore, and corridor open spaces oten associatedwith creeks, rivers and oreshores, or bushland witha ocus on pedestrian and cycle paths in a setting olinked open spaces.

A growing body of research from around the world is adding weight to what most

of us have intuitively believed: that our parks and open spaces are good for us. But

what is also emerging from this research is that the quality of design of our public

open spaces has a direct bearing on how often we use these spaces, how safe we

feel when we are there and what level of enjoyment and wellbeing we gain from the

experience.

Key principlesThe guidelines include key principles upon whichopen space is to be designed, delivered andmanaged. These include:

1. Be meaningul to place and community

2. Be multi-unctional and adaptable

3. Provide diversity

4. Encourage social interaction

5. Promote health and wellbeing

6. Provide equity and accessibility

7. Embody environmental sustainability

8. Ensure fnancial sustainability

The document also includes guidelines for:

Design and delivery objectives or a successuldelivery program rom design and documentationto fnal handover to the end owner.

Ownership and maintenance handover

objectives and processes that will assist asmooth handover o ownership and long termmaintenance.

Checklists are also provided to establish deliveryprocesses and design principles are being met asa project progresses.

Public open spaces should provide opportunity or inormalphysical activity or children, especially within residential areaswhere private gardens are small or non-existent. Photo - ForestGlade
