1 Executive Summary

This deliverable is aimed at collecting the results of all the dissemination and exploitation activities of the project partners with regards to the NeP4B results during the project time-span.

Those activities were carried out by the partners according to the dissemination and exploitation plans described in deliverable D5.1 “Dissemination and Exploitation plans”, to which this document refers. As a consequence, this deliverable contains a thorough report about all the dissemination and exploitation occasions (publications, conferences and seminars, invited talks, organized events, etc.) both for the NeP4B consortium as a whole and for each partner individually.

For those reasons, this document contains both a complete list of all dissemination opportunities, which contains also joint publications between consortium partners, and a partner-specific section, in which each involved unit report about the implementation of its dissemination and exploitation plan, eventually explaining the future steps after the project end to continue the employment, reuse and advertisement of NeP4B project results.

Moreover, since the project also contributed with a number of software prototypes resulting from the research activities, in this deliverable we also report about the Intellectual Property Rights protection and the licences used, in case, to release the software components.

The remainder of the document is structured as follows: Chapter 2 lists all the dissemination actions performed during the whole project duration; Chapter 3 presents the partner-specific report on dissemination and exploitation activities; in this section each partner briefly illustrates the outcomes of those activities with regards to their respective plan as described in deliverable D5.1. Finally Chapter 4 includes some details about the IPR and licensing of the software results of the project.

2 Dissemination activities performed during the NeP4B project

This Chapter includes the report of all dissemination activities performed by the NeP4B consortium partners during the whole project duration.

Due to the very high number of publications and invited talks performed, we divide the list in three sections for sake of readability. Section 2.1 lists the papers published on international scientific journals or book chapters included in international books; Section 2.2 includes publications and speeches at national (Italian) congresses and conferences; Section 2.3 specifies the publications and speeches at international events.

It is also worth noting that NeP4B organized and sponsored the “1st International Workshop on Interoperability through Semantic Data and Service Integration”, co-located with the 17th Italian Symposium on Advanced Database Systems (SEBD 2009), on June 25th, at Camogli (Genova), Italy. More details are given at http://sebd09.disi.unige.it/satellite-events.html.

Other partner-specific dissemination events not listed in this chapter can be included in the various sections of Chapter 3.

3 Partner report on dissemination and exploitation actions

This Chapter is dedicated to the report on dissemination and exploitation actions performed by the consortium partners in the project time-span. Each section illustrates the activities carried out by the partners to exploit NeP4B project results. It could be useful to refer to the deliverable D5.1 “Dissemination and Exploitation plan”, where each partner explained the plan for its individual actions.

3.1 UniMo report

The UniMO Unit was the NeP4B project coordinator and was consequently responsible for the general dissemination of the overall project. Such activity includes the website development and updating, the development of a flyer about the project and other actions for the project divulgation. UniMO planned also several individual exploitation activities concerning largely exploitation of the knowledge gained in the project inside and outside the University to establish contacts for co-operations and future projects with companies and other research institutions.

General dissemination: the dissemination of the project themes to the general public and to the industry allowed us to spread the project goals and results, and consequently to find scenarios where to apply the obtained results. A flyer synthesizing the project goals and motivations has been published and disseminated in several meetings and workshops.

Exploitation in education: Knowledge about semantic web concepts and data integration systems gained in the project has been integrated in several classes and practical training courses planned at the Engineering Faculty (Modena) and Economics Faculty at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. Moreover, some tutorials about the project themes have been planned at the International Doctorate School in Information and Communication Technologies held at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

MSc theses in the area of semantic web, electronic commerce, database management and information systems have been offered. The aim is to motivate students to work in these areas and to find potential new research staff for our research group. Six PhD students addressed and reported in their thesis the result of their activity in the NeP4B project themes.

Exploitation in research: Results of the NeP4B projects have been published in international journals and conference, workshop proceedings. Academic workshops and conferences have been organized based on our expertise in semantic web technology and data integration systems. These activities aimed at establishing the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia as a well-known research institution in the areas of the semantic web and data integration systems. Such activities will help the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia to be involved in further research activities such as thematic networks and projects. A special issue of the Information Systems journal on “Semantic Integration of Data, Multimedia, and Services” has been proposed (UNIMORE – UNIMIB – UNIROMA1). Finally a tutorial on Data and Service Integration has been delivered by Sonia Bergamaschi, Andrea Maurino (Unimib) at the 10th International Conference on Web Information Systems Engineering (WISE 2009 - 6 October 2009) (UNIMORE - UNIMIB)

3.2 CEFRIEL report

CEFRIEL’s mission is to fill the gap between the university research activities and the innovation needs of industries and public administrations. Universities are typically devoted to basic and applied research. Industries focus is mainly on product development and distribution. Even if there is an increasing overlapping among these phases, the distinction of roles still holds and may create a barrier to the effective industry-academia cooperation and the ability to transfer research results to the market. CEFRIEL role aims at filling the gap.

CEFRIEL implements its mission in three different but complementary activities:

– Education: focus in transferring knowledge about technologies and strategies– Consultancy: focus in providing services and innovation to industries– Research: focus in gathering knowledge and expertisesDuring the duration of the NeP4B project, CEFRIEL was able to pursuit its mission in the three types of activities.

Education:

– On March 3rd 2009, CEFRIEL organized a Seminar entitled “Le tecnologie semantiche tra presente e futuro” inviting CEFRIEL stakeholders and customers. During this seminar, CEFRIEL presented some of the most innovative application of Semantic Web technologies, including a presentation of results gathered in the NeP4B project. Considering the successful outcome of this event, CEFRIEL estimates 3 more editions in 2010-2011.

– CEFRIEL updated the executive training course devoted to “Web Evolution” by including expertises about semantic-based technologies gained during the NeP4B project. This course belongs to CEFRIEL catalogue of training for executives; in 2009 we delivered 4 edition of this course, and we estimate at least 8 more editions for 2010-2011.

– CEFRIEL improved the executive training course devoted to “Web 2.0” by adding the expertises matured during the NeP4B project regarding Semantic Navigation and RDFa. This course belongs to CEFRIEL catalogue of training for executives; in 2009 we delivered 3 edition of this course, and we estimate at least 6 more editions for 2010-2011.

Page 17: Final report on dissemination - DataBase Group · Web viewFinal report on dissemination (final, 21.12.2009) Abstract – This report, realized by CEFRIEL, with the contribution of

Consultancy:

– CEFRIEL enhanced its skills to provide better services to customers. In particular, the expertise gained in the project leads to a better support to customers in selecting the best Web and Web 2.0 tools accordingly to their needs; with this regards, CEFRIEL expects to develop 10 project proposals in 2009 with a 20-30% success rate.

– CEFRIEL also expects to reuse concepts, ideas and software developed in the project to provide its customers with custom solutions; with this regards, CEFRIEL expects at least 4 new projects for 2010-2011.

Research:

– CEFRIEL expects to reuse concepts, ideas and software related to the NeP4B project results in other research projects. Moreover, CEFRIEL improved its prospects for participating in other research projects (EU or national) related to the technologies and scenarios addressed in the NeP4B project.

– Moreover, the fruitful collaboration between CEFRIEL and the other NeP4B partners paves the way to further opportunities of exchange and cooperation with them in the future, strengthening the relationship between CEFRIEL and the academic world.

3.3 UniMiB report

The UniMib Unit was active in the general dissemination of the overall project. UniMiB planned also several individual exploitation activities concerning largely exploitation of the knowledge gained in the project inside and outside the University to establish contacts for co-operations and future projects with companies and other research institutions.

General dissemination: the dissemination of the project themes to the general public and to the industry allowed us to spread the project goals and results, and consequently to find scenarios where to apply the obtained results.

Exploitation in education: Knowledge about semantic web services concepts, data quality and data integration systems gained in the project has been integrated in several classes and practical training courses planned at the Computer Science bachelor and Master degree course. Moreover, some tutorials about the project themes have been planned at the Doctorate School in Information and Communication Technologies held at the University of Milano Bicocca. MSc theses in the area of semantic web services, data quality, database management and information systems have been offered. The aim is to motivate students to work in these areas and to find potential new research staff for our research group. Two PhD students addressed and reported in their thesis the result of their activity in the NeP4B project themes.

Exploitation in research: Results of the NeP4B projects have been published in international journals and conference, workshop proceedings. These activities aimed at establishing the University of Milano Bicocca as a well-known research institution in the areas of the semantic web services and data quality. Such activities will help the University of Milano Bicocca to be involved in further research activities such as thematic networks and projects. A special issue of the Information Systems journal on “Semantic Integration of Data, Multimedia, and Services” has been proposed (UNIMORE – UNIMIB – UNIROMA1). Finally a tutorial on Data and Service Integration has been delivered by Sonia Bergamaschi (UniMo), Andrea Maurino at the 10th International Conference on Web Information Systems Engineering (WISE 2009 - 6 October 2009) (UNIMORE - UNIMIB).

3.4 ISTI report

The Italian National Research Council (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche - CNR) is the most relevant governmental organization to promote, co-ordinate and regulate scientific research in the interest of the scientific and technological progress of Italy. In addition to the main activities of research and consulting, CNR stipulates research contracts with external bodies; contributes to studies, researches and scientific missions through study assignments abroad of Italian

Page 18: Final report on dissemination - DataBase Group · Web viewFinal report on dissemination (final, 21.12.2009) Abstract – This report, realized by CEFRIEL, with the contribution of

scientists and assignments of foreign scientists in Italy; provides scholarships for Italian and foreign students; promotes the organization of conferences, conventions, courses and seminars. Furthermore, according to a re-organization which is underway, CNR institutes will have the possibility to create new companies as a spin off of their research activities. Another major role of CNR is the co-ordination (in co-operation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) of the Italian participation in international scientific and technical initiatives. ISTI is one of the largest CNR institutes conducting research activities in the Information Technology field. In particular, ISTI has the “Multimedia Networked Information Systems Laboratory laboratory” (NeMIS), over the past 15 years, has gained considerable experience in a number of areas of particular relevance to the objectives of NeP4B: Design of Object- Oriented Information systems, Information Retrieval, Multimedia Information Retrieval, Access Methods for Similarity Search, User Profile Modelling, Personalisation, Digital Library Architecture.

ISTI-CNR as a research institution cannot exploit economically the results but only propose them to other enterprises for exploitation. This activity will be carried out using the technology transfer program which is one of the institutional activities belonging to CNR.

General dissemination:

– It has been mentioned that one of the roles of CNR is the consulting activity, done internally to CNR and in favour of other organizations and industries. The experience gained in the project will be extremely useful to improve the quality of the consulting work.

– The project was presented in the context of the meetings planned in institutional CNR institutes for technology transfer between the ISTI and industrial of Tuscany. Specifically, the project has been presented to the California Consortium Project (http://www.progettocalifornia.com), which proposes the study, development and promotion of scientific industrial park with high technology in Western Tuscany. We expect to present the results of the project in further meetings between ISTI Project and California, given their interest in possible trials.

– The project was presented during the meeting "Club delle Imprese Innovative 2009" organized by the Chamber of Commerce of Pisa on May 2009.

– The marbel scenario of the Project was presented at the 2nd International Workshop on Image Mining Theory and Applications. Lisboa – Portugal on February 2009,

Exploitation in the industry:

The project was presented during the start-up of the collaboration with to the local SME Metro S.P.A.

3.5 Future dissemination activities

The dissemination of the NeP4B results will continue later than the end of the project. Some demonstrations to companies will be planned in order to acquire data of other real scenarios where to evaluate the NeP4B solutions and to transfer the technologies investigated and developed in the project to the companies. Moreover, the UniMo unit is interested to continue the research activities in the project themes with the other project units. For this reason, some meetings will be organized aiming at developing another research proposal where, starting from the NeP4B outcomes, the research activity may continue.

In the previous sections, the individual partners envisioned some future dissemination activities and also some events (special issues of journals, dedicated workshops at relevant conferences) that will take place after the official end of the project.

4 Management of Intellectual Property Rights

This Chapter details the software prototypes developed in the projects. The purpose is not to go into technical specific aspects of the prototypes – which are covered by WP3 deliverables – but to address the Intellectual Property Rights.

In Table 4.1, for each prototype, we give details about the NeP4B consortium partners who hold and/or share the Intellectual Property Rights.

Moreover, since the NeP4B project also committed to share its results with the open community, in order to maximize the potential reuse of the project results, some of those software prototypes are delivered as open source. In this case, the licensing policy is indicated.

Finally, for each prototype, we also indicate the conditions for its use, i.e. if the software is free, if it is free under special conditions (for example, for research purposes) or it is not free to use.
