    5# C2!VL !he carnival, the period between the %unday of Epiphany and 7sh Wednesday,was the opportunity people to en&oy themselves before the long and austereperiod of ent. Soung and less young disguised themselves as best they could inold clothes, formed processions, e5changed bawdy cat calls and, holding a largepiece of cloth by the corners, threw up into the air an ungainly dummy #gurestuTed with straw and rags. Fights with pro&ectiles, which were often far fromharmless rotten eggs, chic$peas, gravel, oranges and lemons enlivened thepassing of the procession, which usually #nished with the burning of the dummyamid general merriment. 7fter this, weather permitting, there was dancing at

    the corner of the streets or in the #elds to the shrill sound of ma$eshiftinstruments.

     C52!/ 2!!&Guests perform the rite of the olive branch before their evening meal at theirfamily/s house. !his is an important ritual during Christmas. !he youngest orthe oldest perform this rite. !he guest dips an olive branch into a glass of old

    wine and then moves to the #replace. !he #replace is lit with pine and laurelbranches. !he olive branch is moved to trace the sign of the holy Cross.Ioing this the guests say a few words about the olive tress/ virtues. 7t theend of the rite, all the members gather for the meal and wet the lips of theguests with the same glass of wine.Children are involved in all festivities. !hey march in the many Christmas
