How Grades are Calculated
“In computing the term grade 4/5’s of the grade reflects course work while the final examination will be worth no more than 1/5.” (Groves Student Planner page 35).
Translated: 80% of your grade is class work, 20% finals.
7
How Grades are Calculated
Example Two: If Sara has a 85% for the term and earns a
75% on her final what will her grade be?
.85 x .80 = .68 course work+ .75 x .20 = .15 + exam_____= .83
Term Grade of 83% = B
8
How Grades are Calculated
Example Three: If Sara has a 89% for the term and earns a
95% on her final what will her grade be?
.89 x .80 = .71 course work+ .95 x .20 = .19 + exam_____
= .90Term Grade of 90% = A-
9
How Grades are Calculated
Example Four: If Sara has a 88% for the term and earns a
68% on her final what will her grade be?
.88 x .80 = .704 course work+ .68 x .20 = .136 + exam_____= .84
Term Grade of 84% = B
10
Calculating Grades:Final Thought
Term grades that are “borderline” are more likely to be impacted by finals than those that are in the middle of a grade.
Generally speaking, finals will increase or decrease your term grade slightly unless you have major increases or decreases in your final.
Over 95% of Groves graduates attend college. In college often classes receive two grades, a mid-term and final exam. It will be important to learn how to study for finals now.

The secret to doing well on a test is to not try to cram in the information allat once…
But to keep steadily learning it bit by bit over time.
