ThemesThemesHope is one of the main themes in this book. Philip

has to keep his hopes up. If he doesn’t he will stop trying to stay alive. He wouldn’t eat or drink and he would just give up and die. Timothy tries to keep Philips hopes up by telling him that help is on the way and someone will find them sooner or later. Timothy has hope when he sees the island, because he says “From dis’ islan we will get help, be true I swear….”

In the middle of the book hope is a theme. When Philip was climbing the tree to get the coconuts he had hope. If he wouldn’t of had hope he would have just climbed back down the tree and give up. Luckily Timothy got his hopes up after Philip started losing hope. Timothy told Philip that if he fell he wouldn’t get hurt, he would just land in sand and it worked, Philip got the coconuts.

Hope is a theme in the end when the hurricane was coming. They had to make sure everything was protected and they had hope. They had hope because they would never let go of the tree. They would keep hanging on even when their arms were in pain or when all of their strength was gone. They new that if they let go they would never see their family or friends again.

Main CharacterMain CharacterThe main character in this book is Philip. In the

beginning Philip was glad that there was a war, he thought it would be fun. He wouldn’t listen to his mom when she said to stay close to home, instead he would run off far away with his friend. He also starts to think that his mom is right about black people.

In the middle Philip changed his thoughts about the war, he noticed that the war is not as fun as he though it would be. It makes his parents fight and kills people and families. When Philip is blind he also believes that his mom was wrong about black people, beneath the skin is all the same.

At the end Philip was all alone because Timothy died. Philip was independent and made everything organized. He caught food and did everything Timothy had to do. This showed that Philip has matured. He never stopped working and he never complained like a child would.

The Cay As I walked along the shore line of our cay I remembered all of our adventures. I had a flash back. I saw a big friendly man telling me about our cay, it was Timothy. He said that he made stepping stones for me around the cay, but they weren’t there. They must have washed away in another hurricane, same with the hut. It didn’t look how I thought it would look like, but when I close my eyes I new that this is our cay. I love our cay I want to build a house on it just for me, Timothy, and my stew cat. I missed Timothy he really did change me. I bet if I never met Timothy I would never have been who I am today. I would have never been a mature man. And if Timothy never taught me how to survive on my own I would never have my job as a survivalist teacher.
