Title Analysis
From:
Brief Overview
During the production process of our trailer, we felt it was necessary to analyse and
gather inspirations from a variety of different headings within film and music, from
Artofthetitle.com. These all incorporate similar features to the Neo-Noir genre. Our
influences mainly come from Blade Runner, within a Sci-fi nature, therefore
attempting to create a piece within an identical theme. I feel the biggest
component of this, is its lighting, especially concerning neon (florescent.) As our
main filming location (Chinatown) is well established within this subject area, as it
was a prime target to incorporate a comparable idea and running theme
throughout. The analysis of the upcoming titles will present an insight into our
main conception inside the process of establishing an effective and creative title
within the genre.
Enter the Void
One of the first, and most influential
titles, is “Enter the Void”, due to
its unique range of colours. This
mainly fulfils the purpose of
engaging our target audience
because of the brightness and
solidity of each piece. They come
in a form of multiple formats,
which helps us decide which is
the most effective concerning the
trailer; especially regarding our
poster ideas. The contents of our
poster, will have the heading
“Flare” which itself is aimed to
have a certain quality/attraction,
identical to those shown,
therefore having a large impact
on our final design.
Sin City
Of a darker nature, is the title
presented within “Sin City”. This
portrays a more comic book feel
to it, useful in displaying a specific
quality of effect. Its bold red tint,
connotes a sinister nature, which
feels almost threatening, but
similarly constructive in hinting
towards its narrative. As our titles
themselves are planned to have
more florescence to them (a neon
glow or solid bright colour.) This
title is not fully influential, however
still a major component in
establishing a clear practicality
and sense of a strong
continuation of theme throughout.
Crave
This title has a distinguishable older feel to it, presenting more like a stylistic classic Noir film. The tinted colourless (washed) theme, presents an atmospheric, almost foreboding nature, identical to Taxi Driver. This has allowed us to delve deeper into an original motif, with less focus on a Sci-Fi quality, but further into the Thriller genre. Again, is the recurring essence of a vivid title, against a neutral background, emphasising the importance within a particular scene, reinforcing its relevance to the target audience. I feel this is more effective in demonstrating how a powerful font can interpret an entire intro; helpful in creating a set tone/mood.
Domino
“Domino” illustrates a similar theme to our intended original ideas, concerning brightness, ambiguity and incandescence, within a title. This illustrates a strong representation of a certain genre, emitting a concept, more alike to a crime film; including silhouettes and a touch of mystery. However, we feel this would demonstrate a Neo-Noir solely due to its darkness; a vague sense of narrative which can be developed throughout. The title itself is planned to have interchangeable features, appearing as a bold contrast to the images, juxtaposed alongside it, to create visual imagery of a set design.
Symphonies
The final analysis, is the title for “Symphonies.” This incorporates an identical set of features to Blade Runner, feeling more Sci-Fi and futuristic. It has a more unique concept, which compares to titles including Alien, Tron and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. These all develop within the science fiction genre, to portray an immediate recognition and therefore important when aiming towards an intended audience. With this factor, it will help assist us towards a clearer goal of maintaining one specific genre, to clarify and hint at the plot line; creating a small enigma code, to solve, regarding the characters and story-line.
In Conclusion...
All of the mentioned titles, will
help us in our production to
develop a clearer
understanding of the genre
we wish to create. This will
aid us with our intention of
setting the trailer around a
specific theme, clarified
through various posters and
distribution segments.
