What will the course involve?

Thecourseinvestigatesthewaysinwhichdifferentmediasuchasnewspapers,documentaries,advertising,filmandinternetinfluencethewayweseeandthinkabouttheworldwelivein.

Youarebombardedbydifferentmediatextsonadailybasisand,withoutknowing,youarehighlyskilledininterpretinganddecodingthemessagestheyinclude.Itcouldbesaidthatsocietyandthewaywelivehas,toacertainextent,beendeterminedbythemediawhichoperatesinourworld.Inresponsetothisyouwillstudythenumerousdebatesandissuessurroundingmediaproductioninoursocietytoday:

TheASandA2assessmentinvolves50%courseworkand50%examination.TheA2courseworkmodulewillbetakeninJanuary.AllothermoduleswillbeexaminedintheJuneseries.

Tom’s PerspectiveThethingIenjoymostaboutCarmelisthefriendlinessofallthestudentsandstaffhere.BeingoneofthefewpeopletocomefrommyhighschoolIthoughtitwouldbehardtosettleinandmakefriends,butthatwasn’tthecase.IenjoyFilmStudiesbecauseitisaninterestingsubject,andthefacilitiesarethebestavailable.ThetwothingsthathaveimpressedmeinCarmelisthequalityofthetutorsandthevarietyofthecoursesandenrichmentopportunitiesavailable.AfterIleaveCarmelIintendtogotouniversitytofurthermyeducationineitherFilmStudiesorMaths.I’dencourageanyonewhohastheopportunitytoattendCarmeltotakeit.

Itiswiderangingincontent,anddrawsonmanydifferentcontextsrelatingtofilmsthemselves,theindustry,andthosewhoconsumefilm-relatedproducts.

Thecourseisdemanding,butenjoyable.ProspectiveFilmStudiesstudentsshouldbekeenconsumersoffilm,andbepreparedtousethefamiliargroundofHollywoodasafoundationtoexploreotheraspectsoffilmproductionandconsumption.TheA2coursediversifiesfurther,whenstudentswill,forexample,study‘InternationalFilmStyles’asanassessedpartofthecourse.

What will the course involve?

Youwillbeinvolvedincritical,analyticalandcreativeworkbasedonfilmhistory,theoryanddevelopmentsinfilmcriticism.Filmstudentsshouldbeadequatelyequippedwithgoodessaywritingskills(as up to 80% of your AS marks are based on written responses),andanabilitytothinkandwriteanalytically.TheAScoursedevelopsandassessesstudents’abilitiestoevaluateandanalysearangeofdifferenttypesoffilm-relatedmaterial.Courseworkalsointegratesanopportunitytoworkcreatively.

Thecoursewillincreaseyourawarenessofawiderangeofcinemaandindependent/alternativecinemawillformanintegralpartofthecourse.Anappreciationofthehistoryofcinema,itsimpactculturally,sociallyandeconomicallywillbeamainaimofthiscourse.

ThedepartmentarrangesanumberofvisitstolocalcinemasaswellasIndependentcinemassuchasFACTandCornerhouse.Courses,workshopsandlecturesattheNationalMuseumofPhotography,FilmandTelevisioninBradfordwillalsobeofferedthroughoutthecourse.LastyearsomestudentswenttoNewYorktostudyfilmandmediaatvariouslocationsacrossthecity.

AspartoftheEnrichmentProgramme,studentscanjointheMediaSkillsGrouptodeveloptheirpracticalskillsusingmediasoftware.ThedepartmentalsorunsaShortFilmCompetitionthatstudentscanenterbymakingtheirownfilmswhicharejudgedandawardedprizesattheendoftheyear.
