The first step…

The zoetrope, this was one of the very first steps in the chain of events that lead to the modern film.

All information on this page comes

from the book called, A concise history

of the origins of cinema by Chris J

Mitchell.

The motion image zoetrope was invented in AD180 by

the Chinese inventor Ting Huan.

It wasn’t until the 17th century that light

projected imagery became popular in

Europe and North America.

The Magic lantern…

The Magic Lantern is a device that

uses the power of light to create

shadows that project images onto a

wall.

This was invented in the 1650’s by

the man called Christaan

Huygens…

But it is believed that the magic

lantern was made at least three

hundred years prior to Huygens by

the priests in medieval times.

and William Dickson.

He created the early motion camera

in 1891.

The camera was called the

This device was used until Edison

found a smaller alternative so that

families could buy them.
