Filling Out the FAFSAThe most important step in filling out the FAFSA correctly is to slow

down and read each question carefully.

To begin, visit studentaid.gov ordownload the myStudentAid app

Move your mouse over the “Apply For Aid” tab

Click Complete the FAFSA Form.

If you have never filled out a FAFSA before and have never created a FSA ID or password, select “Start Here” under the New To The FAFSA Process? Section.

* If you have already created a FSA ID and Password, skip to slide 9

Creating a FSA ID• If you are the student filling out the

FAFSA, click, I am the student

• Next, click “Create one” to create a FSA ID and Password. This will open a new tab.

FSA ID Tips

• Never use the same username or email address for the parent and dependent student.

• Make sure to save your ID and Password somewhere safe, so that you can use it for the future. You will need the ID and Password each year to fill out the FAFSA, and any time you need to update your FAFSA.

Creating a FSA ID• If you or your parent have already

created a FSA ID, you will receive a message similar to the one on the right.

• You can only create one FSA ID for your Social Security Number.

• If you receive notification a FSA ID has already been created for your SSN, see slide 10

If you have already started the FAFSA, or completed one for previous years, click “Log In” under the Returning User section.

If you are the student filling out the FAFSA, click, I am the student and enter your FSA ID Username and Password

and click Next, in the blue box

After reading the disclaimer, click ACCEPT, in the blue box.

If you are filling out the FAFSA for classes beginning in June, click Start 2019-2020 FAFSA, in the blue box. If you are filling out the FAFSA for

classes beginning in July or August, click Start 2020-2021 FAFSA, in the blue box.

Create a Save Key. We suggest using something you will easily remember, such as the last 4 digits of your phone number, your home zip code, etc. This will be used if you need to save the FAFSA and come back to it later.

Enter Personal Info

• Enter your social security number, name and birthday.

• Note that when the FAFSA is asking questions about you, the student, it says “Student Information” in the blue box on the top left of the screen. Click Next, in the blue box.

Enter your email address and phone number and click Next, in the blue box

Email Address Tips:• The email address you enter here

is the email address the Financial Aid Office will use to communicate with you.

• If you only have a high school email address, it will be beneficial for you to create a new one that you will have access to once you graduate high school.

Enter your permanent mailing address and click Next, in the blue box.

Mailing Address Tips:• The address you enter here will be

the address the financial aid office uses to mail you any correspondences.

• If your address changes, please inform the Financial Aid office as soon as possible at faquestions@coffeyville.edu

Answer the Residency questions and click Next, in the blue box.

Residency Question Tips:• If you are not sure if you are a U.S.

citizen or eligible noncitizen, click on the question mark in the blue circle to the right of the question. Only U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizens are eligible to receive financial aid, including Pell Grants, Student Loans and Work Study positions.

Answer the Student Education questions and click Next, in the blue box.CCC is a Two-Year Institution • For college degree, be sure to only select one of these options:

• Associate degree (occupational or technical program)

• Associate degree (general education/transfer program)

• Certificate/diploma (occupational/technical/education program of less than 2 yr.)

• Certificate/diploma (occupational/technical/education program of at least 2 yr.)

• Other/undecided

• For what will your college grade level be when you begin the school year, be sure to only select one of these options:

• Never attended college/1st yr.

• Attended college before/1st yr.

• 2nd yr./sophomore

• If you will have a bachelor’s degree before beginning at CCC, you will not be eligible for Pell Grants.

Answer if you are Male or Female, and click Next, in the blue box.

Student Selective Service Tips:• Most male citizens and male

immigrants must register with the Selective Service System (the draft) to receive federal student aid. This requirement applies to any person assigned the sex of male at birth.

• If the FAFSA gives you the option, you can request they submit your information to the SSS. Otherwise, if you have not already registered, you can do so online at www.sss.gov

If you have a Driver’s License, enter your information and click Next, in the blue box.

If you do not have a Driver’s License, you may just hit next.

Answer the Student Foster Care and Parent Education Completion questions and click Next

• If you are unsure if you are a foster youth, click the question mark in the blue circle.

• If you are unsure the highest school completed by your parent, you may select other/unknown.

Answer yes or no and click Next.

If you select yes, you will be asked a second question to determine your financial aid eligibility.

Enter your high school info and click Search. If you do not find your school, click Next.

Enter the colleges you wish to send your FAFSA to.

CCC’s Federal School Code is 001910.

• Select yes, then enter the code and click Search.

Click the box next to School Name and click Next.

Select your Housing Plans and Click Next

Enter your (student) marital status

Marital Status Tips• It is asking about your marital status as

of the moment you are completing the FAFSA.

• I am single means that you have never been married.

• You are not able to change your marital status, so be sure to enter the correct information. If you find that you have made a mistake, please contact the financial aid office.

• If you are unsure which status to select, click the question mark in the blue circle.

Answer the Student’s Dependents Questions and Click Next

Dependents Questions Tips• As the student, do you have children

who will receive more than half of their financial support from you between 7/1/2020 and 6/30/2021? If you are unsure, click the question mark in the blue circle.

• If you have a child, but someone other than you provides more than half of their financial support, DO NOT select yes.

• Dependents other than your children and spouse could be parents, grandparents, etc. For more info, click the question mark in the blue circle.

*Note: The financial aid office may require you to provide additional information if you answer yes to any of the questions on this page.

Answer the Additional Dependency Questions and Click Next.

• If you are unsure if any of these questions

apply to you, click the question mark in

the blue box, or contact the financial aid

office.• The 3rd question is asking if any of these happened after

you turned 13.

• Only check yes for the 5th question if you can provide a copy of a court's decision that, as of today you are in legal guardianship. Do not check the box and contact the financial aid office if custody was awarded by the courts and the court papers say custody (not guardianship).

*Note: The financial aid office may require you to provide additional information if you answer yes to any of the questions on this page.

Answer the Homelessness Filter Question and click Next.

Homeless means lacking fixed, regular, and adequate housing.• You might be homeless if you're living in

shelters, parks, motels, hotels, public spaces, camping grounds, cars, abandoned buildings, or you’re temporarily living with other people because you have nowhere else to go. Also, if you’re living in any of these situations and fleeing an abusive parent, you might be considered homeless even if your parent would otherwise provide a place to live.

• Select “Yes” if any time after July 1, 2019, you were homeless or were self-supporting and at risk of being homeless.

• Select “No” if you’re not homeless or at risk of being homeless.

If you answered Yes to the previous question, you will be asked additional questions.

• If you select None of the above, you will be directed to contact the financial aid office.

• If you complete the application without providing parent information, your FAFSA will be rejected and the Department of Ed• will not transfer any parent information

from your last year's application into this year's FAFSA® form;

• will not calculate your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), which colleges use to determine your financial aid package;

• you may be limited in the types of federal student aid that you are eligible to receive; and

If you are a Dependent Student, you will now be asked to enter your parent’s information.If you are an independent student, skip to slide 57 Parent’s Marital Status Tips• Select Never Married, if the parent that provides the

majority of your financial support has never been married.

• Select Unmarried and both legal parents living together if both of your legal parents have never been married to each other but live together.

• Select Married or Remarried if your legal parents are married to each other or the parent who provides the majority of your financial support is remarried.

• Select Divorced or Separated if the parent who provides the majority of your financial support is divorced or separated and not remarried to anyone.

• Select Widowed if the spouse of the parent who provides the majority of your financial support is deceased.

* If you are unsure which option is correct, click the question mark in the blue circle or contact the financial aid office. You cannot change the answer to this question once your FAFSA has been submitted.

Never Married Marital Status

If you select Never Married for your parent’s marital status, you will be asked which parent’s information will be provided. Select the parent who provides the majority of your support and click Next.

Unmarried and Both Legal Parents Living Together Marital Status

If you select Unmarried and both legal parents living together, you must provide both parents’ tax information.

• Since they are not married, they should have filed separate tax returns, you will need to add their tax information together.

*If you need help with this, please contact the financial aid office.

Married or Remarried Marital Status

• If you select Married or Remarried for your parents’ martial status, you will need to enter the date that they were married or remarried

• If your biological/legal parents are divorced, but the parent that provides the majority of your financial support is remarried, enter the date they married your step-parent here.

• If your parent is married/remarried, you must enter both people’s income on your FAFSA, even if they were married after 2018 (or 2017, if filling out the 19-20 FAFSA). If they were married after 2018, you must add their income together. Contact the financial aid office if you need help with this.

• Do not select married or remarried if your legal parent is living with someone but is not legally married to that person.

Divorced or Separated Marital Status

• If you select divorced or separated, you must enter the date your parent was divorced or separated.

• If the parent who provides the majority of your financial support has been divorced or separated more than once, enter the date they were most recently divorced or separated.

• If your parent is divorced or separated, only enter the financial information for the parent providing the majority of your support. If they were divorced or separated after 2018 (or 2017 if filling the 19-20 FAFSA), you must separate their income, even if they filed jointly. Contact the financial aid office if you need help with this.

Widowed

• If you selected Widowed, enter the date your parent’s spouse passed away.

• If your parent is widowed, only enter the financial information for the parent providing the majority of your support. If they were widowed after 2018 (or 2017 if filling the 19-20 FAFSA), you must separate their income, even if they filed jointly. Contact the financial aid office if you need help with this.

Enter Parent’s Info and Click Next

Parent Info Tips

• You are asked your parent’s last name and first initial, not their middle initial.

• If you selected married/remarried or unmarried but both legal parents living together, you will be asked to enter both parent’s information.

• If your legal parent is married to someone other than your second legal parent, enter their spouse’s info, not your second parent’s info.

• If you selected never married, divorced/separated or widowed, you will only be asked to provide info for one parent. Choose whoever provides the majority of your support.

• If your parents are not US citizens or do not have a SSN, enter all zeros. Never enter what’s called an individual tax payer id number.

Household SizeHousehold Size Tips

• The FAFSA will automatically count you and your parent(s) (or you and your spouse if you are independent and married)

• List the number of your parents’ other children (or yours, if you are independent) IF:

• You or your parents provide more than half of their financial support between 7/1/2020-6/30/2021, even if they do not live with you or your parent(s).

• You can include any unborn children if they will be born during 7/1/2020-6/30/2021.

• List the number of other people IF:• They now live with your parent (or you, if you’re

independent)• You (if independent) or your parents provide more than

half of their financial support now and will continue between 7/1/2020-6/30/2021

• If you are unsure who should be counted in your household, click the question mark in the blue circle, or contact the financial aid office.

Number in Collegewill be on the same page as the household size

Number in College Tips

• If you are a dependent student, you cannot count your parents in the number in college.

• Include:• yourself, even if you’ll attend college less

than half-time in 2020–21, and• other people in your parents’ household

only if they’ll attend college at least half-time in 2020–21 in a program that leads to a college degree or certificate.

• If you have a sibling who is still in high school, but will be taking 6 or more college credits, contact the financial aid office before including them in your number in college.

Do you want to provide parent’s info?

• If you select “I am unable to provide information about my parent(s)” your FAFSA will be rejected, and you must contact the financial aid office. Only select this option in if you have a special circumstance.• For dependent students, a special

circumstance is a situation that exists between the student applicant and his or her parent(s) which prevents the student from providing parental information.

Have your parents completed their 2018 tax return? (If filing the 19-20 FAFSA, have they completed the 2017 tax return?)

Parent’s Tax Filing Tips

• If your parents indicate they “Will file” a 2018 tax return, use estimated tax information. Select the “Income Estimator” button for assistance estimating your parents’ adjusted gross income, and answer the remaining questions about their income to the best of your ability.• Once your parents file, they must correct

the FAFSA form by changing their status from “Will file” to “Already completed;” and estimated answers to the final amounts on their 2018 tax return.

What type of tax return did your parent(s) file?

If your parents have filed a tax return, or will file a tax return, select the type of tax return filed.

• If filing the 19-20 FAFSA, you will also have the option to choose a 1040A or 1040EZ.

• It is very helpful to have the tax return available when filling out the FAFSA. If you select the incorrect tax return type, your parents will be unable to link to the IRS using the Data Retrieval Tool.

Parent’s Tax Filing Tips

• The “Filing Status” field is located at the top of page one on the IRS Form 1040.

• Head of Household is generally for single adults with dependents. If your parent was married in 2018 (or 2017 if filing the 19-20 FAFSA) but filed Head of Household, please see page 25 of the IRS’ Publication 17, to see if they were able to do so. You can access Publication 17 here: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/p17--2018.pdf

• If your parent’s martial status has changed since filing 2018 (or 2017) taxes, visit: https://studentaid.gov/2021/help/parent-marital-status-change

• If you select the incorrect tax filing status, your parents will be unable to link to the IRS using the Data Retrieval Tool.

IRS Data Retrieval ToolIf you are not given this option, skip to slide 53

Some students will be given the option for their parent(s) to transfer their tax return information into this FAFSA with the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.

• To link to the IRS, your parent(s) will need their FSA ID Username and Password.

Have your parent enter their FSA ID Username and Password.

• If your parent is married, you must select which parent will enter their username and password. • If your parent has not yet created a

username or password, they can click “create an FSA ID.” See slides 7 & 8 for tips

• You cannot select parent 1, and then enter the username and password for parent 2.

• If you cannot remember which parent is parent 1 or 2, you can click back to Parent Demographics.

• If your parent forgot their username and/or password, they can reset it by clicking forgot username or forgot password.

If your parent is successfully able to log in with their username and password,

click “PROCEED TO IRS SITE”

When you click “ok” you will be taken to the IRS website.

Tips to Entering Parent’s Info on IRS DRT Site

• You must select the correct filing status, or you will not be able to transfer your parent’s info to the FAFSA

• You must enter the street address exactly as it appears on your parent’s 2018 tax return (or 2017 if filing the 19-20 FAFSA), or you will not be able to transfer your parent’s info to the FAFSA

• See next slide if you’re having problems entering the correct information.

To prevent ID theft, the IRS requires the information to match exactly what their records

show. It is not unusual for students and parents to be unable to link to the IRS. If that happens, click

“return to FAFSA” and manually enter the tax information from the tax return.

If your parent(s) are able to correctly enter their info, make sure to click in the box next to “transfer now” and

then click “transfer now.” You will then be redirected back to the FAFSA website.

If your parent is able to successfully transfer their information from the IRS, you will see a message similar to the one below. DO NOT change any of the financial information if you see the message “transferred from the IRS” below it.

Manually entering parents’ tax info

• If your parent(s) were unable to link to the IRS, you must manually enter their tax info.

• The FAFSA will tell you what lines of their tax return to look at to answer each question.

Enter Parent(s)’ Wages

• If your parent(s) did not file taxes, but they did earn income, list it here.

• If they did not earn any income, type 0.

• Your screen will not tell you which lines of the tax return to look at if your parents did not file.

Answer the Parent Addition Financial Questions

• If you are unsure what any question on this page is asking, click the question mark in the blue circle.

Based on your previous answers, you may be asked if you’d like to skip questions about your

parent’s assets. • If you decide to skip these

questions, doing so won’t affect your eligibility for federal student aid.

The FAFSA will now begin to ask financial questions about you, the student.

• If you are not going to file a 2018 tax return, select not going to file and skip to slide 68

(2017 if filing a 19-20 FASFA)

If you filed a tax return, select the type

If you have filed a tax return, or will file a tax return, select the type of tax return filed.

• If filing the 19-20 FAFSA, you will also have the option to choose a 1040A or 1040EZ.

Based on your previous answers, you may be asked if you’d like to skip questions about your assets.

• If you decide to skip these questions, doing so won’t affect your eligibility for federal student aid.

Are you a preparer?

• If you or your parent(s) are completing the FAFSA, select no.

Review your answersand click Next on the bottom of the page.

Provide Signatures

Agreement of Terms

• Read through the terms, and select agree to agree to the terms.

Apply Student Signature

• Click Sign This FAFSA to sign the FAFSA.

Apply Parent Signature

• Your parent must enter their FSA ID Username and Password here to sign the FAFSA.

• If your parent cannot sign the FAFSA with his or her username and password, click other options to sign and submit.

Parent Signature

• If your parent is unable to sign the FAFSA with his or her username and password, select Print a Signature Page. • Your parent must sign this form and

follow the instructions on the form to mail the form to the Department of Education.

• If your parent selects Submit Without Signatures, the Department of Education will hold your FAFSA for 14 business days waiting on a signature. If you do not apply a parent signature, your FAFSA will be sent to our school as rejected.
