Joseph Morong is 2015 Marshall McLuhan Awardee Broadcast journalist Joseph
Morong is the 2015 winner of the Marshall
McLuhan Fellowship Award for Investigative Journalism. A senior reporter of GMA Network Inc., Morong has over 15 years of journalism experience covering the justice and political beat for the TV network. He is an anchor of NewsTVLive and a regular reporter for State of the Nation with Jessica Soho, GMA News TV's flagship newscast that presents and dissects pressing issues in the Philippines.
The Marshall McLuhan Fellowship, named after the world-renowned Canadian communication scholar, is the Embassy of Canada in the Philippines’ flagship media advocacy initiative. Launched in 1997 to encourage responsible journalism in the Philippines, the Fellowship reflects Canada’s belief that a strong media is essential to a free and democratic society.
The program, with financial support from Sun Life of Canada, provides the winner with a study tour to Canada. This tour provides the winner the opportunity to interact with Canadian media counterparts and to discuss current issues with Canadian government officials and members of civil society. The winner will also have the chance to sit as a fellow at the McLuhan Institute in Toronto.
Eighteen investigative journalists have been awarded the fellowship since its inception :Armand Nocum (1997), Ellen Tordesillas (1998), Sheila Coronel (1999 and 2014), Vinia Datinguinoo-Mukherjee (2001), Miriam Grace Go (2002), Luz Rimban (2003), Tess Bacalla (2004), Yvonne Chua (2000 and 2005), Gerry Lirio (2006), Inday Espina-Varona (2009), Glenda Gloria (2008), Diosa Labiste (2009), Ed Lingao (2010), Carolyn Arguillas (2011), Lynda Jumilla (2012), Malou Mangahas (2013), and Cecilia Aldaba-Lim (Cheche) Lazaro (2014).
Morong delivered his presentation at the Coach House - the same building where Marshall McLuhan taught and worked at the University of Toronto on February 11th, 2016. The event was opened by Michael McLuhan, the youngest son of Marshall McLuhan. (Photo credit: Embassy of Canada in the Philippines)
He was also presented at a forum by the Philippine Press Club of Ontario in Toronto (PPCO) on February 10, 2016. Morong discussed "Communicating the message of the marginalized: Media's coverage of the Bangsamoro Peace Process in Southern Philippines." He discussed how the media had been covering the peace process in the restive Mindanao and related issues, and how it could improve
the narrative of peace and non-violence in this Philippine region. (Photo credits: Jojo Taduran).
Morong was chosen for the distinction for his excellent reportage of the issues surrounding the peace process in Mindanao, especially the discussions around the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law. He is currently covering the peace process between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. He has extensively covered the pork barrel scam and the impeachment of the former Chief Justice of the Philippines.
Morong finished BA in Journalism from the University of the Philippines, and is currently working on a second degree in Fine Arts, also from the University of the Philippines. (***Fe Taduran***)

Talisay Fiesta Celebration 2016
Photos by Nonie Manalili and Roberto Villaruel
Every year, people from different parts of Talisay, Batangas who have
taken the chance to migrate to Winnipeg come together for a night to celebrate the feast of the patron Saint of Talisay, San Guillermo (Saint William). This year in particular, was the 40th anniversary of the Talisay Association of Manitoba, the founder of the Talisay Fiesta. More than 500 people came including children. They came to share together not only their favorite dish but the gift of their personhood, their time, talents and resources. How exciting it was to see common friends and relatives around, connect and create memories of a lifetime.
It’s more than a blessing to open the celebration of the Fiesta with a Thanksgiving Mass celebrated and offered by the former Assistant Parish Priest of Talisay way back 2003-2007, Rev. Fr. Jose Pedro Fernando (Randy) Sudario. He voluntarily came to Winnipeg directly from the Philippines to celebrate with the Talisenio’s of Manitoba. The traditional “Prusisyon” was done after the Mass while reading the life of St. William to remind Talisenios of his life and for the younger generation to know the Patron Saint and how they could
mirror his life and become their inspiration.
This was followed by an open buffet. The program continued with the emcees, Noriel and Rowena announcing performers such as dance number from Talisay Kids and Talisay Girls, song number from Ms. Tessie Garcia and Dra. Femie Babao who showed off their talents and entertained the crowd. Mr. Glen Naquila and the Blenk Band serenaded the former Mr. & Ms. Talisay, Alyssa Terrible and Jerrod Alcantara as well as the current Mr. & Ms. Talisay, Cybil Keith Garcia and Jericho Anthony Vero. The night also included an open dancefloor and numerous raffles consisting very generous prizes donated by sponsors and donors. A special thanks goes out to those who helped out in the event, for sacrificing time out of their lives to make this occasion a success.
Also thanks to the Founders of the Talisay Association of Manitoba namely: Rudy Comia, Guillermo Alcantara, Tintoy Ortilla, Leon Licmo, Pascual Salazar, Cosme Luna, Arthur Nibay, Ading Panganiban as well as the past Presidents and current President of the Association, + Cosme Luna, + Ading Panganiban, + Rudy Comia, + Eber Marqueses, Amang Salazar,

Grace Poe and Nancy Binay not on speaking terms
Presidential aspirant Grace Poe and Nancy Binay, (daughter of VP Jejomar
Binay) have not spoken to each other since members of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) questioned the qualifications of Poe to run for presidency.
Senator Poe was asked if she was already talking to Binay and she replied “Hindi pa” (not yet).
Binay also said that she hasn’t spoken to Poe either because there was no opportunity to talk with her.
On an interview last Tuesday, Binay said: “Di ba sabi ko pahupain muna natin yung situation? Hurtful words were said…There will be a perfect timing for that na mag-uusap-usap.”
Binay also added that she has no problems working with Poe despite their personal issues.
“Parang kumbaga, lahat kami are heeding the call of my sister na tigilan muna yang mga ganyang mga issue kasi nga kumbaga mas dapat manaig yung
pinagsamahan kaysa politika,” she said.
“Para sa amin, ang eleksyon, isang araw lang yan. Pagkatapos nyan, tapos na kaya mas dapat mas pangalagaan yung friendship over politics,” she added.
Jerika Ejercito- Kris Aquino is a bullyJerika Ejercito, daughter of former president Joseph Estrada and former actress Laarni Enriquez, shared an article of Spot.ph on her facebook account, called Kris Aquino a bully who can’t handle the truth.
“Don’t dish it out if you can’t handle it. Sheesh…every night she bullies her guests on a&a (Aquino and Abunda Tonight) and every morning does it all over again on her show cleverly named (KrisTV) her poor guests publicly humiliated…she feels entitled to be BRUTALLY HONEST day in, day out…but obviously cannot handle the truth herself,” Ejercito posted.
Spot.ph posted this quote from Kris Aquino:
"I spoke to my brother... I love my brother. I support my brother. I trust my brother. I believe in my brother. And by tomorrow you can start looking for a new issue to bully me about."

Manny Pacquiao criticized over anti-gay statement, loses deal with Nike
In a video posted by TV5, Rep. Manny Pacquiao released a statement that generated
anger all over the Philippines and worldwide. “He said in his speech that same sex relationships are worse than animals”.
Manny said “It’s common sense, do you see animals mating with the same sex? Animals are better because they can distinguish male from female. If men mate with men and women mate with women they are worse than animals.”
Singer-songwriter Aiza Seguerra, who recently got married to her longtime girlfriend, asked on voters to boycott Manny, who is running for senator in the coming elections.
Gay comedian, Vice Ganda posted #PrayForMannyPacquiao to his 6.7 million followers on twitter. The comedian also said “Some people think they can judge people like God just because they’ve attended a prayer meeting and read the Bible. The senate needs experts on politics and law, not blind prophets.”
Manny posted a response through instagram saying “I rather obey the Lord’s command than obeying the desire of the flesh. I’m not condemning anyone, but I’m just telling the truth of what the Bible says.”
He also added an apology - “I’m sorry for hurting people by comparing homosexuals to animals. Please forgive me for those I’ve hurt. I still stand on my belief that I’m against same sex marriage because of what the Bible says, but I’m not condemning LGBT. I love you all with the love of the Lord. God bless you all and I’m praying for you.”
As a result of Manny’s remarks, Nike terminated their contract with Manny and issued this statement: "We find Manny Pacquiao's comments abhorrent.”
“Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community" said the sportswear company.
"We no longer have a relationship with Manny Pacquiao" they added.

Vice Ganda accepts Pacquiao’s apology
In an interview, Manny Pacquiao was quoted as saying same-sex couples were
worse than animals. However the ensuing firestorm compelled the Sarangani congressman to issue a public apology to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. In a video statement on his Instagram account,
Pacquiao admitted that he was wrong for comparing men to animals, but stood firm that he’s against same-sex marriage.
Vice Ganda, one of the prominent personalities who expressed dismay over Pacquiao’s statement accepted the apology. But the TV host-comedian said he will still not vote for Pacquiao.
The boxing icon is running for a Senate seat in May.

People moved around looking for tables, long line of people heading to
the buffet counter, many went to the second floor for more chairs and table, others ate on the counter overlooking the crowded dance floor as the live band rendered a line dancing music, QPAM's officers and members went around selling tickets for the silent auction and 50/50. As
if there was so much love on the air, valentine wall paper adorned the entrance, and most people had cut-out valentine decals on their clothes, these were the sights and sounds of the most successful fundraising by QPAM "HAPLOS SA PUSO" held recently at Essence, Canad Inns.
"I am very thankful to our sponsors, donors, volunteers and to all people who attended our
event to raise more funds for our scholarship," said Maan Chan Urbano, president of QPAM, "Our officers, members and advisers had worked hard to invite their friends for this special event."
According to Maan Chan Urbano, QPAM needs more students in Quezon province for possible recipients of the scholarship.
QPAM's current scholar Rocelle Ann Gando will be graduating this year with a
degree in psychology at the Southern Luzon (Tagalog) State University.

Happy #LouisRielDay! The sun was shining, the weather was perfect and a quiet street in sunny St. Vital was the perfect trifecta for some great road hockey with Mayor Brian Bowman, Councillors Mayes, Gillingham, Dobson & Sharma along with members of our families! A huge thank you to Councillor Brian Mayes for organizing this years' road hockey rumble in St. Vital, and for his generous hospitality. Very impressive stick handling skillz by Councillor Scott Gillingham, and look out for the too fast for your eyes Bowman backhand shot!
