Jon Reyes wins St. Norbert in landslide victory

Photos by Ron Cantiveros | Filipino Journal

In convincing fashion, Jon Reyes, PC candidate for St. Norbert steam rolled over

NDP incumbent Dave Gaudreau in the polls during the 41st Manitoba general election on Tuesdaynight. With 51.6% of the popular vote, Reyes won with 4,666 votes compared to 3,047 for Gaudreau. The huge margin of victory was the extreme opposite of the election results back in 2011. Gaudreau (NDP) won the St. Norbert riding in 2011 by a mere 31 votes over the PC candidate.

Jon Reyes becomes the first Canadian-born Filipino member of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly. Surrounded by family, friends and supporters at his campaign headquarters Pembina Hwy, Jon addressed the jubilant crowd after local media reports announced he won riding. In his victory speech and with his family at his side, he commended the hard work of everyone on this campaign team for their support, dedication and efforts to during the nomination and election campaigns. After

several congratulatory photos and lots of post-election winning selfies, Reyes joined the rest of the PC Party at their election headquarters at Canad Inns Polo Park.

A historic win after 16 years on the sidelines...Brian Pallister leads the surging tide of change for a much better ManitobaBrian Pallister becomes the 22nd Premiere of Manitoba, making a historic win which is considered the biggest upset in the political history ever recorded in the changing political landscape of Manitoba.

Progressive Conservatives easily won the whopping 41 seats while NDP under Greg Salinger ended the 16 years of NDP fatigue with a meager 13 seats and the Liberal got 3

"Manitoba is not a have-not province, it is a have province waiting to happen" Pallister said amid the jubilant crowd of supporters at the Canad Inn.

Pallister outlined all the promises made during the campaign, making the return of the 7% sales tax from 8% which was implemented by the NDP under the leadership of Premiere Greg Salinger.

"Manitobans have the right to vote on any major tax increases," Pallister said.

=Others platforms include: to reduce the cabinet by 1/3; to abolish subsidy to political parties; to initiate several studies and reviews to lessen health care waits and to address the emergency room waiting times; and look for waste within the government; the improve the performance of the students in their educational pursuit; and to find ways to re-energize the provincial nominee program.

Several NDP ministers were defeated and the Tories easily captured the seats from some of the former NDP strong hold in Central, Eastern and Western Manitoba, including Brandon.

"Unbelievable this things happened," a PC supporter said while looking at the numbers of NDP cabinet ministers who lost their jobs by the Tory swept into power with a mega-majority.

Jon Reyes, the first Filipino born in Winnipeg and the first president of the Manitoba Filipino Council of Manitoba, won handily at St. Norbert, knocking out NDP Dave Gaudreau; while Flor Marcelino and Ted Marcelino, both NDP , were re-elected. Aida Champagne, a Liberal candidate in Tyndall, needs a second try.

"We are happy that Jon Reyes won and we are looking forward for his major role in this government,"said one of Jon Reyes' volunteer. Jon Reyes is well-known for his inclusiveness, his passionate in helping others

and his firm commitment to ideals of good governance.

Premiere Greg Salinger announced his resignation Tuesday night while Liberal leader Rana Bokhari did not make any announcement of resignation.

Helping you achieve your dream of becoming a great physician!

All Saints University was founded by a group of dedicated medical and business professionals in 2006. Since its’ inception, it has produced hundreds of Doctor of Medicine graduates in various stages of practice or training around the world, and now fully operates two campuses in the Caribbean islands of Dominica and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. With a current student population of almost 1,200, its’ students have the option to complete their Clinical Rotations in the United States, Canada or in the Caribbean.

The University’s curriculum is structured to ensure that students are well grounded in the Basic Medical Sciences and equips them with the knowledge and skills which can be deployed in their future practices or in scientific and clinical research. It ensures that students understand Medicine within the framework of different social, cultural and economic settings and inculcates problem solving, critical thinking and clinical skills.

The medical school’s mission is to produce compassionate, competent and caring physicians for the global community. This was what attracted their current Filipino Dean of Clinical Affairs, Dr. Ronaldo Santiago, to join the University. An Ophthalmologist by background with previous work experiences in the Pacific and Indian Oceans and an alumnus of the University of Toronto where he did his fellowship in Ocular Oncology, Dr. Santiago is well aware of the potential Filipinos can bring in the medical field and is now fully intent on increasing the presence of Filipino students in the University. All Saints University strives to carry out its’ primary mission of producing graduates with strong moral and ethical foundation in the practice of Medicine, characteristics which Filipinos excel at. By doing this, the University aims to contribute towards global health by providing a better approach to educating the next generation of physicians at affordable fees. With graduates currently practicing or in various stages of their postgraduate or residency training in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Nigeria, India, the West Indies and here in Botswana, the University

has been able to establish itself as a medical school to reckon with.

For any questions or to register for the May 14th presentation contact Allen Vilar, All Saints University Recruiter for Manitoba, email at [email protected] or call at 204-619-1783.

The Republic of Adoboby Rod E. Cantiveros

PC blue tsunami covers Manitoba, engulfs the NDP orange, and tickles the Liberal red...

Oh what a memorable Tuesday night, to see how the Manitoba Progressive

Conservatives covered most of the seats with blue, making the NDP orange on the sideline, and the Liberal red, a minority. Unbelievably, the Tories won a whopping 41 seats, NDP, a meager 13, and surprisingly, the Liberals had 3 seats, with 2 newly elected candidates from 1, Jon Gerald of River Heights. The Green Party of Manitoba was shut out of Tuesday's election.

That Tuesday night, the surge of Tory Blue tossed out many NDP cabinets and saw the changing color of the political landscape in Central Manitoba, with Tories claiming the whole electoral area: Eastern Manitoba with the total of 7, Western Manitoba with 7, and Brandon East and West. As the news media reported, "The scale of the victory of 61-year old Tory

leader Brian Pallister led his party to, is unheard of in Manitoba politics. Not only is it the largest seat count ever but possibly the highest share of popular vote ever," wrote Larry Kusch of the Winnipeg Free Press. And Joyanne Pursaga of the Winnipeg Sun wrote "The Progressive Conservative scored a landslide victory Tuesday night and were on track to possibly tie or even break the record for the most seats claimed by a single party.". Other broadcast media had validated the historic win of the Tories.

Thus, it ended the 16 years of NDP fatigue. And it ended its "cut! cut! cut! black propaganda”,

and the tagline: The NDP builds; Conservative cuts!

And the Liberals, under current Liberal Leader Rana Bokhari, ended with a bang for another 2 newly-elected Liberals, namely, Cindy Lamoureux

who defeated Melanie Wight in Burrows, and Judy Klassen of Kewatinook, an upnorth riding. Former party leader Jon Gerrard, who was the party's lone MLA before the election was called, was re-elected in his constituency of River Heights in Winnipeg on Tuesday.

And the Tuesday night celebration became a memorable event when Jon Reyes, the first Canadian- born of Filipino parents, won the St. Norbert Riding, outdistancing NDP Dave Gaudreau who was openly critical of PC leader Premier Greg Salinger.

"I'm I dreaming, please pinch me to wake me up!", Jon Reyes said before he addressed his Jon Reyes team, led by hard working Canadians and volunteers, at his headquarters where TV large screen had started painting Manitoba’s political landscape in blue and where you would find out the volunteers coming from the various ethnic communities.

"This is a part of my journey, from our simple family beginning when my parents immigrated in the late 60's, to the challenges and an opportunities given to us through hard work, and to our passion to serve others, and to be visible always in the various events and activities, my winning is only the beginning of my commitments to serve our community and our province. I will be your voice in the government," Jon Reyes said as the Jon Reyes Team and the volunteers were jubilant for his

win and the surging tide of blue! And everyone is hoping that

Jon Reyes will be more visible to the various communities and be engaged regularly with his constituents. "My constituents voted for a big change, for a better Manitoba, and for a much better benefits for my St. Norbert constituents," he added with a grin. And he personally thanked his supporters and volunteers who helped him to win the hearts of the voters in St. Norbert riding.

Aida Champagne, another passionate leader in the community and who, with the help of other dedicated Filipino volunteers, founded the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival, and a dedicated former president of the Filipino Seniors group, did not make it at her first attempt as a Liberal candidate for Tyndal Park Riding. In her Facebook, she wrote: "For the past few months, as I embarked on a new challenge in life, I got to know a lot of people who supported me and stood by me through good times and bad times. These people even set aside their personal lives to give unconditional love and support. Words are not enough to show my appreciation and gratitude to all of you. Maraming salamat sa inyong lahat."

Hoping for a much better Manitoba as envisioned by the Premiere-designate Brian Pallister when he said to the jubilant crowd of supporters at Canad Inns: "Welcome back former Manitobans to our province."

Incumbent senators lead

senatorial race

The results of the April 5-10 Pulse Asia survey showed either incumbent or

former senators have a statistical chance of winning in the May 9 elections.

Leading the race are Senate President Franklin Drilon (51.6 percent), Sen. Vicente “Tito” Sotto III (49.8 percent) and former Senators Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan (46.8 percent), Panfilo Lacson (40.8 percent) and Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri (38.9 percent). The rest of the candidates who made it to the top 13 are boxing superstar and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao (36.3 percent), former Technical Education and Skills Development Authority Director General Joel Villanueva (35.6 percent), Senators Ralph Recto (35.6 percent) and Sergio Osmeña III (34.2 percent), former Sen. Richard “Dick” Gordon (33.8 percent), former Akbayan Rep. Risa Hontiveros (33.7 percent), former Justice Secretary Leila de Lima (32.3 percent) and Valenzuela City Rep. Win Gatchalian (31.5 percent). The ABS-CBN-commissioned survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews. It had a margin of error of plus-or-minus 1.5 percent.

V-League Winnipeg: Winnipeg’s Emerging Hot Sports among Pinoys

The volleyball games during Life of Peg Sportsfest last year spurred the growth

and rise to the new volleyball league, aptly called V-League by Life of Peg organizers and sponsors. While the play of hoops showcased male bravados, it was the grace and art at volleyball games that filled the gym bleachers at R.B. Russel High School.

“Perhaps, it is because when a working mom or a wacky aunt, engaged in competitive sports such volleyball, the entire family or clan showed up to cheer,” explained Nestor de Quiroz, one of the convenors of the Life of Peg event, in an exclusive interview for Filipino Journal.

The success of last year’s sports festival pushed the triumvirate of Nestor and Jackie de Quiroz and Vangie Mance to replicate or even expand the sporting event this year.

Nine teams registered in the women’s division while seven teams enlisted in the men’s division. The best team in each

division will be bring home the De Quiroz Mance Cup at the conclusion of the league on June 15, 2016. One team in each division will own the perpetual bragging rights of being the first champion of V-League Winnipeg.

League games are Friday and Saturday nights at Sturgeon Community Center and the R.B. Russell High School. On any given night, fancy team names such as Let’s Eat Pancit, Forever Flames or Saladmaster duke it out in the name of volleyball glory.

V-League is sponsored and run by Nestor and Jackie De Quiroz, mortgage specialist and realtor tandem, and Vangie & Mar Mance of Mance Financial. Along with their V-League committee, work tirelessly to ensure the first year league is a success for its player, and their families who pack the gym every week.

“Some people think the registration fee will be sufficient to cover all expenses. That’s the farthest from the truth. Just imagine paying two line judges, two referees and 3 table officials

every game. And other incurring expenses such rent for venues and marketing. We subsidize this activity because we believe in them,” Jackie De Quiroz on start-up and supporting V-League initiatives.

It is the belief that a sporting event like this one redefines and strengthens our solidarity as one vibrant community.

Nestor de Quiroz is a not a stranger to organizing. In fact, prior to migrating to Winnipeg, he was a sports coordinator for the prestigious DLSU in Cavite. It is no surprise that it comes as second nature for him.

Catch the excitement. Visit www.v-leaguewinnipeg.com for schedule games, news features on players and other announcements.

New Albums to Check Out This Year (part 2)

In the previous issue, you've seen previews of the new albums released this year by

the legendary English artist David Bowie, the iconic Metal band Megadeth, and the pioneering Britpop group Suede. However, these are just the tip of the so-called sonic iceberg. If you're a music buff who does not discriminate on music--meaning, you are the type of a music enthusiast who appreciates any genre of music--then you should know that every year is a good year in music. Whatever kind of music you dig, there should be something for you in any given year. All you need are a pair of open ears, initiative, and the guide of music journalists who are always on top of whatever's new in the music world. So now, let me recommend to you another batch of new albums released this year that are worth checking out.Dream Theater - Astonishing

Inarguably, Dream Theater is one of the most revered bands in the Progressive Metal arena. Every album that the American band releases is worth the wait--well-conceived, well-arranged, and well-produced. That should be unsurprising, considering the musical background and instrument proficiency of each of the band's members. Formed in 1985, Dream Theater released its 13th studio album in January. Entitled Astonishing, this latest oeuvre is a concept album divided into two acts comprised by 34 songs and instrumentals,

musically expressed in varying sonic styles.James - Girl at the End of the World

For fans of Indie Pop music, the English band James is no longer unheard of; after all, James has been in the Alternative music circuit since 1982, now armed with 14 studio albums' worth of discography, not counting various non-album releases. James's list of classic hits include "What For," Ya Ho," "Stripmining," "Come Home," "Born of Frustration," and the commercial favorite "Say Something." Last March, the prolific band released its 14th work, entitled Girl at the End of the World. True to the band's trademark sonic style, the sound of the album is unmistakable--jangly and chiming guitars, rolling basslines, upbeat tempo, trumpet flourishes, and of course vocalist Tim Booth's distinct yelpy voice. Recommended songs are the guitar stomper "To My Surprise," the piano-led, Gospel-flavored "Nothing but Love," the eerie-sounding, carnivalesque "Dear

John," the driving and engaging "Surfer's Song," and the album's ballad title track.Rihanna - Anti

By now, the one-word moniker Rihanna is already a household name. Well, why not? After all, the U.S.-based Barbadian singer has become one of the popular singers in the recent years who has achieved celebrity status. Thanks to her international Pop hits that include "Umbrella," "Disturbia," and "Birthday Cake," all of which have become regular radio staples. If you're regularly tuned in on the radio, then the R'n'B-flavored Hip-hop song "Work" must by now have become a worm to you ears. That song is actually a single off Rihanna's eighth studio album, entitled Anti. Released in January, Rihanna's latest offering is a powerhouse of dancey, upbeat, groovy, and sexy songs that will certainly adorn any dancefloor or dimly lit entertainment basement. Aside from "Work," other catchy songs from the album include the sinister-sounding "Kiss It Better," the midtempo bass-heavy "Same Ol' Mistakes," the big-hall ballad "Love on the Brain," and the lyrically provocative "Sex with Me."Final Note

In the next issue, join me again in this exciting sound trip. Expect the new releases by the English Synthpop duo Pet Shop Boys, the pioneering Britpop band Kula Shaker, and the Greek New Age–music composer Yanni.

Fabulous Las Vegas 2

The Bellagio & Dancing Fountains.

Famous for glitz and glamour, Las Vegas dazzles day and night and magnetizes

people - millions of tourists and wealthy gamblers leaving huge fortunes in the Sin City.

On The Strip of 4.2 miles (6.8 kms.) stretch of South Las Vegas Boulevard are the mega casino-hotels and their associated entertainment that make Las Vegas a city like no other. Most people consider The Strip, originally the two-lane main road leading into the city from Los Angeles, California, actually from Mandalay Bay to Stratosphere or vice versa.

Nothing can compare a stroll at night on The Strip, as it's cooler, to admire Las Vegas cityscape with its dramatic architecture on a sea of lights. Visible from The Strip are popular free attractions that won't eat up your budget. You don't have to break the bank to enjoy your trip to Vegas because there are totally free attractions to discover and explore right on The Strip such as the man-made volcano, also a peaceful waterfall when it's not erupting, belching

fire every hour after dusk at 7pm at The Mirage with the smoke spouting more than 100 feet above the water which is actually perfumed with a pleasant pina colada scent to cover up the odour of the natural gas; the full scale Carribean pirate ship that engages in combat with a British frigate at The Treasure Island; the thousands of dancing fountains synchronised to a rainbow of coloured lights and accompanying music at The Bellagio; or the strongest beam of light in the world coming from Luxor's black glass pyramid.

Live circus shows for kids and adults of all ages are also free at one of the best kid-friendly casino-hotels in the city, Circus Circus (the largest permanent big top on earth) where world-class acrobats, jugglers, trapeze artists, and unicyclists perform death-defying stunts for about ten minutes every half-hour between eleven am to midnight.

Inside The Bellagio are the "Fiori Di Como", a huge hand-blown glass sculpture that covers the ceiling of the casino-hotel's

lobby, created and completed in 1998 by renown sculptor Dale Chihuly and the Conservatory & Botanical Garden which undergoes five seasonal themes using tens of thousands of real flowers, trees and plants to showcase the beautiful sights and hues of spring, summer, fall, winter, and Chinese New Year.

Visit Caesars Palace Forum Shops to see the Fall of Atlantis and Festival Fountain Shows. The Fall of Atlantis Show using water, fire, smoke, and animatronic nine-foot-tall talking Roman statues around the aquarium tells the story of a feud between the bratty kids of King Atlas as to who will rule the throne of the Atlantis Kingdom. Then God interferes and the kingdom falls. To the west side of the Forum Shops is the Festival Fountain amazing laser, water and light show featuring the moving statues of Greek gods Bacchus, Venus, Apollo, and Plutus.

Catch a glimpse of The Flamingo's outdoor wildlife habitat of pink-coloured birds - a flock (called a "flambouyance") of Chilean flamingos peacefully co-existing with an array of black swans, exotic ducks, Japanese koi fish and yellow catfish, pheasants, and turtles among the foliage and waterfalls, streams and lagoons.

The Excalibur with its exterior medieval castle appearance that is sure to fascinate the kids features a large arcade, the Fun Dungeon Arcade.

For a culture buff here's something to do in Vegas that may be completely different - taking a spin around the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas public spaces with exclusive art collections at the open art P3 Studio on the 3rd floor of the resort where you can

see an artist-in-residence working on his piece of art..

As more and more resorts are offering attractions geared toward the young people Las Vegas has become a great tourist destination for families.
