PASTORAL LETTER
Dear Friends,
As I prepare this letter, everything seems to be changing.
The weather has changed – it is now much colder. The time
is about to change – an extra hour in bed. Some time ago
the shops changed! We seemed to go from ‘Back to school’
to ‘Begin your Christmas preparations’ with alarming speed.
Sometimes change can be a good thing. If we find a
better way of doing something, then we should change and
not feel that we must do what we have always done. A
different approach to things can make life more varied and
much more interesting.
Preparation is essential if we are going to do any
task properly. Giving plenty of time for preparation is an excellent idea. This of course
depends on what we are preparing for.
Yes, we should prepare for Christmas but not as the world of commerce would
recommend. We must think about the Holy Child coming into the world to become the
Saviour of the world. How does one prepare for that?
Turn to God and allow Him to guide you.
Ask God to help you understand the true significance of his Son’s birth.
Have a quiet time when you can remove yourself from the pressures often associated with
Christmas and concentrate on the REAL meaning of this holy season.
As the weeks hastily pass let us remember why we are preparing for Christmas, then we will
find true, lasting joy!

ANNUAL PARISH VISITATION
During late November and early December we shall undertake our annual parish visitation, inviting all who live in our parish to attend our services (including our special services around Christmas) and/or our organizations. We do this by delivering an invitation in the form of a Christmas Card to each home. A number of our present members began to attend as a result of our invitation in previous years.
For the visitation our parish is divided into 72 districts, the smallest having only 20 homes and taking only a few minutes to complete with the largest having 112 homes and taking about 50 minutes to complete. The cards to be delivered to each district are placed in a large envelope containing the relevant addresses and a description of the district, e.g. the following details are provided for District 62.

This allows you to choose which district(s) you feel able to cover – some are entirely at ground level and have no stairs at all. Please remember that the more people who participate, the easier the task will be for everyone. If you really are unable to cover any districts, then you can still support the parish visitation by praying for its success.

The main quarterly celebration of the sacrament of communion will take place during our service on Sunday, 1 December. We also celebrate Christmas (29 December) and Epiphany (12 January) in short communions during our morning services.
While all are welcome to attend any of our services, a special invitation is extended to anyone wishing to attend our communion services.
It is estimated that by 2020 up to 80% of the world’s population will be using a smartphone. That means as many as six billion people could be in constant communication with each other. Working with United Bible Societies and other global organisations, SBS is launching a ground-breaking project to build a smartphone app which will deliver inspirational daily Bible verses, in the user’s chosen language wherever they are in the world. People are then encouraged to read those verses aloud, in the belief that when we speak God’s Word aloud lives will be changed, and communities transformed. What a wonderful use of technology in our ever-changing world.

WOMAN’S GUILD
At the woman’s guild opening social on October 7th, singer Phil McFarlane treated us to an evening of song and laughter, and we were his backing group all the way! As always, the guild extends a warm invitation to join us any Monday Evening.This year’s Christmas fayre will take place on Saturday 23rd November, opening at 11am. Tickets cost £2.50 (including tea/coffee and home baking) and we hope that many of you will come along to support the fayre making it a success again. Donations for the stalls will be very welcome. A box will be in the vestibule for these donations.

SCRABBLE
We are still meeting on Wednesday afternoons at 2pm and shall be glad to have some more folks join us. We enjoy a few games of Scrabble, in a light-hearted way, along with a cuppa and biscuits. We look forward to filling our spare seats.

This year is the 150th Anniversary of CrossReach, the Church of Scotland charity offering social care in many areas throughout Scotland. It began in 1869 as the Church of Scotland Committee on Christian Life and Work. The organisation has developed over the years and now helps thousands of people across Scotland annually. Among the many receiving assistance are those living with dementia, people with mental, physical or learning difficulties, children living in poverty, those with drug or alcohol dependencies and older people needing care.
We will be remembering the work of this organisation in our service on CrossReach Sunday on 17th November and the proceeds from the November Coffee Morning will be donated to support the work of CrossReach.
BURNSIDE AUTUMN CLUB
The Burnside Autumn Club, now in its 30th year, was started by Burnside Community Council and is open to all retired men and women from the surrounding area. It meets every Wednesday afternoon between October and March in the hall of Burnside Blairbeth Church, Church Avenue, Burnside.
Meetings start with a short talk by an invited speaker and there is an interesting programme covering a variety of topics. Following the talk, members enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and a chat with their fellow members. Once a month, in place of a speaker, there is a musical afternoon.
New members are always welcome, and the Club’s Chairman will be delighted to welcome them any Wednesday. So please come along.
THOUGHTFUL THURSDAYS
The church is open to the public from noon till 2pm each Thursday for a quiet visit or meditation. We also serve tea, coffee and biscuits, but bring your own packed lunch! This has become a very pleasant interlude for chat and company and any member of the congregation will be most welcome.

LEPROSY MISSION
As a congregation, we collect used stamps for the Leprosy Mission. Please use the envelope in the vestibule to donate your used stamps.New leprosy collecting boxes are now available in the vestibule along with the summer issue of their magazine. Please take one if you are interested.

This year Christian Aid Week raised over £7m. This is a tremendous amount will help some of the world’s poorest people, for example those affected by Cyclone Idai in Zimbabwe. They have been provided with food, clean water and hygiene kits. They are being helped to rebuild their homes and have access to psychosocial support they need. None of this would have been possible without your help. For praying, for little boxes for loose change, for collecting round doors and for donating…THANK YOU.
Locally we have our Annual Coffee Morning to raise funds. The amount raised will be announced at a later date, but we anticipate a good support from our congregation, and other local churches.

WORLD MISSION NEWS
Naomi Simpson, Outreach Officer with World Mission Council reminds us the World Aids Day is held on 1st December. This is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for folks living with HIV and Aids, raise awareness, and remember those who have died.
Many children have been left with no immediate family, and some of them are being cared for by people like our own Anne Davidson in Makululu. Please remember them in your prayers.

MONTHLY COFFEE MORNING
Thanks to your support, we were happy to be able to give £1,000 towards the Session House refurbishment.
We have regulars and we have occasional visitors, and they all, hopefully enjoy their visit. We are open for business on the second Saturday of each month, 10am till Noon throughout the year and would be delighted to welcome YOU. If you would care to help on an occasional basis, please get in touch with any of the team.

Session House Refurbishment
The session house refurbishment is now well under way. Thanks to all in the congregation who have scraped, painted and cleaned our way to a new bright usable space to be enjoyed by all.
We hope the finishing touches will be complete and the session house will be back in operation for the November Session and board meetings.
