J . L . Turner Center
November 2014
Letter from the
Director
Dear Turner Center Members,
As a reminder, all individuals attending FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center events including trips, classes and programs must be a Bellevue Family YMCA member.
The Bellevue Family YMCA/FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center is and has always been a member-based facility. Any member of the Bellevue Family YMCA, over the age of 50, is also a member of the FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center and is entitled to participate in a multitude of events and activities planned for active older adults as well as in YMCA activities.
Please have your membership card ready when you enter the building so that you can be scanned in by a YMCA staff person.
Thank you for your cooperation! ~ Megan
lies in helping improve the quality of life of
senior citizens. I know the importance of
keeping your mind active as you age. I
encourage people outside of my
FiftyForward circle of influence by inviting
them into my home to learn bridge and
teaching bridge lessons at other social clubs.
Q: How would you encourage others to be
involved? One of the problems I see as
far as a lot of senior citizens and a problem
that I had some years ago, we don’t see the
value of exercise. I started out only wanting
to play bridge, but I had bone spurs. A
friend invited me to an exercise class. The
problem is communicating the information
to people who will make use of it.
Thank you, Ed, for sharing your insight and
for encouraging others to get involved!
Ed Neal, volunteer facilitator for the
Bridge group that meets each
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at
the Turner Center, recently sat down
with the staff to discuss why he gives
so much of his time, talent and
treasure to others.
Q: How did you first get involved
with the Turner Center? Bridge
lessons were given here at the center
when it first opened. When the
lessons ended, there was a group that
wanted to continue to play. I
volunteered or was “drafted” as the
second coordinator in 2008 and
became an instructor in 2011.
Q: What motivates you to be
involved with FiftyForward and
the Turner Center? My interest
How One Member Gives Back to the Center

Viva la Diva, November 15, 2014
FiftyForward is proud to present the 4th Annual Viva la Diva Run on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at Nissan North America campus in Cool Springs. This cross-generational event celebrates and supports health, wellness and safety programs for girls and women of all ages. We encourage men and boys to run in support of the women in their lives!
Monies raised from this event go to support the operations of our seven lifelong learning centers throughout Davidson and Williamson Counties. FiftyForward also provides services to homebound and frail seniors, offers a wide variety of community volunteer opportunities, operates FiftyForward Travel and hosts a performing arts program and Senior Center for the Arts.

What is a Community Event?
A Community Event is an event that takes place at the Turner Center that is open to the public. Moving forward, each monthly newsletter will designate certain events as Community Events. You will recognize these events when you see the CE in front of them. Anyone from the community is welcome to attend even if they are not a member of the Bellevue Family YMCA and the FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center. Since we are reminding everyone of our membership policy this month, you should also know that you may bring a guest to any event utilizing the YMCA’s guest policy. Please check in any guests with the YMCA front desk staff.
Turner at Twilight is geared towards “baby boomers”, but all members
age 50+ are welcome!
Please look at the insert in this newsletter and see what fun evening/weekend
activities we have planned for this month.
