In today's gospel a lawyer stood up and asked Jesus: "Teacher, what must I do to inherit everlasting life?" Je-

sus responded by reminding him of what it says in the Old Testament: "You shall love the Lord your God, with all

your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength, you should love your neighbor as yourself. His response was

quite simple, quite direct and not hard to understand.

Yet, for some reason, the lawyer doesn’t get it. He pushes Jesus further by asking: "Who is my neighbor?"

So, in order to help this lawyer understand who his neighbor is, he tells the parable of the good Samaritan.

But, all this lawyer wanted was for Jesus to answer this question: “who is my neighbor?" In other words: Who do I

have to be nice to? Who do I have to Love.

We perhaps ask the same question. Like this lawyer, we perhaps find it difficult to understand who our

neighbor is. We find it difficult to understand who Jesus wants us to love. Does he expect us to love everyone? Is he

saying to us that “our neighbor” includes all people? Yes, Jesus is saying that all people are our neighbors. We

should treat all people with compassion. I think this message needs to be heard by us today as much as it needed to be

heard in the time of Jesus.

We live in a country where there is a lot of racial tension - blacks against whites, whites against Hispanics,

cops against robbers. The list can go on and our paper is filled with stories that point out how far we are from loving

our neighbor. Look at all the arguing that is going on in regards to immigration reform. I hate when politicians call

the undocumented or refugees “illegal aliens”. Like really, are they from another planet? Look at the amount of wars

that are being fought because of an inability to understand the “other”.

The challenge of Jesus in today's gospel is to go beyond all our prejudices, beyond all the racism that exists

within our hearts, beyond all that keeps us from loving our neighbor. The challenge of Jesus is to show compassion to

all, even toward those who hate us!

Let us continue to reach out to all people and fight against the prejudice and racism that exists in our society.

En el evangelio de hoy, un abogado se puso de pie y le preguntó a Jesús: "Maestro, ¿qué debo hacer para

conseguir la vida eterna?" Jesús respondió recordándole lo que dice en el Antiguo Testamento: "Amarás al Señor

tu Dios, con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma, con todas tus fuerzas y con todo tu ser, y a tu prójimo como a ti

mismo". Su respuesta fue bastante simple, bastante directo y no difícil de entender.

Sin embargo, por alguna razón, el abogado no lo entiende. Él empuja a Jesús más al preguntar: "¿Quién es

mi prójimo?"

Entonces, para ayudar a este abogado a entender quién es su vecino, cuenta la parábola del buen samarita-

no. Pero, todo lo que quería este abogado era que Jesús respondiera a esta pregunta: “¿quién es mi prójimo? " En

otras palabras: ¿Con quién tengo que ser amable? ¿A quién debo amar? ".

Tal vez nos hacemos la misma pregunta. Como este abogado, tal vez nos resulte difícil entender quién es

nuestro vecino. Nos resulta difícil entender a quién Jesús quiere que amemos. ¿Espera que amemos a todos?

¿Nos está diciendo que “nuestro prójimo” incluye a todas las personas? Sí, Jesús está diciendo que todas las per-

sonas son nuestros vecinos. Debemos tratar a todas las personas con compasión. Creo que este mensaje debe ser

escuchado por nosotros hoy tanto como lo fue necesario para ser escuchado en el tiempo de Jesús.

Vivimos en un país donde hay mucha tensión racial: negros contra blancos, blancos contra hispanos, polic-

ías contra ladrones. La lista puede continuar y nuestros periódicos están lleno de historias que señalan lo lejos que

estamos de amar a nuestro prójimo. Mire todos los argumentos que se están produciendo con respecto a la reforma

migratoria. Odio cuando los políticos llaman a los indocumentados o refugiados "illegal aliens". ¿Es que acaso,

son de otro planeta? Mire la cantidad de guerras que se están librando debido a una incapacidad para entender al

"otro".

El desafío de Jesús en el evangelio de hoy es ir más allá de todos nuestros prejuicios, más allá del racismo

que existe en nuestros corazones, más allá de todo lo que nos impide amar a nuestro prójimo. El desafío de Jesús

es mostrar compasión a todos, ¡incluso a los que nos odian!

Continuemos acercándonos a todas las personas y luchando contra el prejuicio y el racismo que existe en

nuestra sociedad.
