Testing The XP DEUS Large Searchcoil By Marc I have been hunting with the XP DEUS wireless metal detec- tor for about a year now. I have only one reaction to it— Wow I I would urge every DEUS Hirschmann user to take a closer look at the large coil. Testing TheXP DEUS Large

I have been hunting with theXP DEUS wireless metal detec-tor for about a year now.Initially, I hunted with the stock9" searchcoil for about sixmonths before deciding to put theoptional large coil (11" x 13")through extensive testing. to be slowed, whichmeans that you still getall the benefits of thestock coil, but in a larg-er, ground-eating mon-ster coil. The large coilallows you to improveyour odds of swingingover a good target, which is always a goodthing. In fact, I am ableto cover almost twicethe ground that I wasable to cover with thestock coil, which in andof itself justifies thepurchase of this acces-sory.

The added weightof the large coil is alsominimal. I am able toswing it all day withbarely noticeablefatigue, compared tousing the stock coil. Ifyou remove the controlbox from the S-rod, youwould barely notice thedifference in weight. The balance of the large coil isalso very good, effectivelyputting less strain on your bodywhile hunting, which is one ofthe reasons why so many peoplehave decided to purchase theDEUS in the first place. Thelarge coil does not add enoughweight to impact one of the mainreasons why so many peoplehave flocked to the DEUS tobegin with: the lack of weight.

If you put in long days ofdetecting, or go on weekendhunts, having the large coil isalso a good idea, given that thecoils tend to have half the batterylife of the control box and head-phones. Having both coils avail-able allows you to continue hunt-ing without the need for recharg-ing, which means more time outin the field, which in turn meansmore targets recovered. I havefound that the large coil hasabout equal runtime per charge

as the stock coil, which is some-where in the 15-hour range, depending on how you set up thedetector.

Although the large coil issold as an "optional accessory"for the XP DEUS, in my opinionthis is a must-have item for everyDEUS owner/user. Given thecompetition in this hobby, everyserious detectorist needs to makethe most out of his time out hunt-ing. The 11" x 13" coil allowsDEUS users a greater chance toswing his coil over a good target, thereby increasing find rates. The 9" coil is highly effectiveand will hit on just about every-thing that the large coil will, butby increasing the footprint of thecoil, you greatly increase yourchances of detecting a targetrather than barely missing it withthe 9" coil.

My local dealer brought up a

point once that got methinking. He said,"Aside from all thegreat finds you havemade in your careermetal detecting, canyou imagine all thegreat targets that youalmost found?" Hewas referring to tar-gets which I may havebarely missed in myswing, or which werejust barely too deepfor my detector. Thelarge coil narrows thegap between lost andfound, plain and sim-ple. As with theadventage in coveragecited earlier, this rea-son alone justifies thepurchase of the largecoil, and I have aplethora of great findsto prove it.

After my firstunit equipped few hundred hours on

the DEUS, I thought itcouldn't really get any better.Between the weight, wirelessfunctionality, and lightning-fastprocessor speed, I didn't knowwhat else I could possibly askfor. After testing the large coil, however, I can honestly say thatmy find rate has improved, which shows that the stockDEUS package can indeed bemade even better. XP's idea tomarket a modular product con-tinues to prove a sound decisionbecause it allows users toalter/update/upgrade accordingto their needs. With free soft-ware updates for life and animpressive array of optionalaccessories that are easily inte-grated into the product, XP havegone where no other manufac-ture has dared to do... and it'sworking!

On the topic of working, Ihave to say that in my now near-ly 1,000 hours on the DEUS, I

have not had a single problemwith my detector. I have not hadto have anything repaired orreplaced, nor have I had anyproblems whatsoever with theproduct. XP has spent a lot oftime and money to bring thisquality product to market, and itshows. Less down time on yourmachine also means increasedtarget recovery, so having a sta-ble working detector is veryimportant. I have owned almostevery top-of-the-line detectorthat has come out in the pasteight years, and it is very rare tofind a detector that runs this well, all the time, with no problemsright out of the box. This is trulya turn-on-and-go detector. It iseasy to use and understand, andjust requires that the user put inthe time to learn it— and, ofcourse, swing the coil over tar-gets. After all, no matter howgood this detector is, it still won't

find good targets in the ground ifthey're not there.

The DEUS in conjunctionwith the large coil is one seriouspackage. Whether you are hunt-ing parks, yards, beaches, farmfields, or curb strips, the XPDEUS with a large coil is, in myopinion, the ultimate detector forachieving your goals. Don't justtake my word for it, though.Good finds speak for themselves,so go online and see what othersare finding with this combination.

The XP DEUS large search-coil is available through autho-rized XP Metal Detector dealersnationwide. Backed by a two-year warranty that covers partsand labor, the searchcoil has a listprice of $616, and an introducto-ry selling price of $560.
