FUNDING YOUR FOOD STARTUP

FIELDGUIDEPRESENTED BY

Preface

Entrepreneurship is our greatest hope for radically improving our

world and tackling problems in the areas of health, transportation,

and community. Often we encounter founders with big ideas but

no idea how to raise capital and get their venture funded. From

our experiences and interviews with 75 successful founders, we

created a playbook to help more founders embark on their

entrepreneurial journey. Robyn Metcalfe and the Food+City

project is the perfect partner for us in shepherding innovation in

the basic arena of how and what we eat.

We are very excited about this year's Food+City Challenge

Prize. All the startups that entered, our finalists, and our

impressive team of judges, mentors, and sponsors represent

the best of food entrepreneurship. Evan Baehr and his book,

Get Backed, is an example of the extraordinary individuals

and their ideas that make this competition both worthwhile

and valuable to our community of food entrepreneurs. After

reading Evan's book, entrepreneurs cannot help but be

successful raising funds for their venture.

About Food + City

Food+City grew out of The Food Lab at The University of Texas at Austin and is directed by Dr. Robyn Metcalf. Based in Austin,

Texas, Food+City is a multimedia platform for both exploration of the global food system; it provokes fresh perspectives on the

realities of how we feed cities, inspiring and fostering action. Food + City stories, told in many forms, raise awareness of the

opportunities for improvement in our food systems and uncover the insights that will shape how we make our world sustainable.

Our mission is also manifested through the Food+City magazine (print and digital), events such as our Brown Bag Lunch Talks,

and the annual Food+City Challenge Prize, a startup competition focused on logistical challenges and opportunities. For more

information on Food+City including magazine subscriptions, please visit www.foodandcity.org. Follow and like us on Facebook
