The pretensioner does not requireany maintenance or lubrication.Anything that modifies its originalconditions invalidates its efficiency. If, due to unusual natural events(floods, sea storms, etc.), the devicehas been affected by water and mud,it must be replaced.

To obtain the highest degree ofprotection from the action of thepretensioner, wear the seat belttight across the chest and pelvis.

PRETENSIONERSTo make the protective action of theseat belts even more effective, theFiat Strada is fitted withpretensioners. These devices feel, through a sensor, the occurrence ofa severe impact, retracting the beltsby a few centimetres. Thisguarantees that the belt adheresperfectly to the body of theoccupants, before the restrainingaction begins. The reel locks toindicate that the pretensioner hasintervened; the seat belt cannot bedrawn back up even when guided.

A small amount of smoke may beemitted. This smoke is not harmfuland does not indicate a fire.

    The pretensionersrequire neither internal

lubrication nor maintenanceinterventions. Thepretensioners must not betampered with under anycircumstances. This couldcompromise the operation ofthe safety devices. Shouldintervention be necessary, contact a Fiat Dealership.

    LOAD LIMITERS(for versions/markets, where provided)

To increase passenger safety in anaccident, the front and rear (forversions/markets where provided)seat belt reels contain a load limiterwhich controls the force acting onthe chest and shoulders during therestraining action of the belts in theevent of a head-on collision.

The pretensioner maybe used only once.

In thesecircumstances, wait a few minutesto let the engine cool, then openthe reservoir cap slowly andcautiously.Top up with coolant, making surethat the level of fluid is betweenthe MIN and MAX references onthe reservoir. Also check visuallyfor leaks. If, when restarting, thewarning light should come onagain, contact a Fiat Dealership.

If the vehicle is used under

demanding conditions (e.g. towingtrailers uphill or fully loaded): slowdown and, if the light stays on,stop the vehicle.Wait for 2 or 3 minutes with theengine running and slightlyaccelerated to further favour thecoolant circulation. Then stop theengine. Check correct fluid level inthe reservoir as described above.

IMPORTANT Over demandingroutes, it is advisable to keep theengine on and slightly accelerated fora few minutes before switching it off.On some versions, the display showsa dedicated message.

  • FRONT AIRBAGS

The front (driver and passenger)airbags protect the front seatoccupants in the event of head-oncrashes of medium-high severity, byplacing the cushion between theoccupant and the steering wheel orinstrument panel.

Therefore, non-activation in othertypes of collisions (side collisions, rear shunts, rollovers, etc.) does notindicate a system malfunction.

An electronic control unit causes thebag to inflate, if necessary, in theevent of a head-on crash.

The bag will inflate instantaneously, placing itself between the frontoccupants bodies and the structureswhich could cause injury. It willdeflate immediately afterwards.

Front (driver and passenger) airbagsare not a replacement of butcomplementary to the use of seatbelts, which should always be worn,as specified by law in Europe andmost non-European countries.

In the event of an impact, someonenot wearing a seat belt could moveforward and come into contact witha bag which is still in the openingphase. The protection offered by thecushion is reduced in such a case.

Front air bags may not activate inthe following situations:

    frontal impacts against highlydeformable objects not involvingthe front surface of the vehicle(e.g. wing collision against guardrail, etc.);

    vehicle wedging under othervehicles or protective barriers(e.g. trucks or guard rails);

AIRBAGSThe vehicle is fitted with front airbagfor the driver and, forversions/markets where provided, front airbag for the passenger.

Do not apply stickers orother objects to the

steering wheel or the passengerside airbag cover. Never putobjects (e.g. mobile phones) onthe passenger side of thedashboard since they couldinterfere with correct inflationof the passenger air bag andalso cause serious injury to thepassengers.

    WARNING

  • GENERAL WARNINGS

The front airbags may be deployed ifthe vehicle is subject to heavyknocks or accidents involving theunderbody area, such as for exampleviolent impacts against steps, kerbsor low obstacles, vehicle falling intobig pot holes or depressions in theroad. A small amount of dust will bereleased when the airbags aredeployed. This dust is not harmfuland does not indicate the beginningof a fire. Furthermore, the surface ofthe deployed bag and the interior ofthe vehicle may be covered with adusty residue: this may irritate yourskin and eyes. Wash with mild soapand water in the event of exposure.Should an accident occur in whichany of the safety devices areactivated, contact a Fiat Dealershipto have the activated devicesreplaced and to have the wholesystem checked.

    85

Every control, repair andreplacement operation concerningthe airbags must only be carried outat a Fiat Dealership. If you are havingthe vehicle scrapped, have the airbagsystem deactivated at a FiatDealership first. If the vehiclechanges ownership, the new ownermust be informed of the method ofusing air bags and the abovewarnings and also be given thisOwner Handbook. Pretensionersand/or front airbags are deployeddifferently on the basis of the type ofcollision. Non-deployment of one ormore of the devices does nottherefore indicate a systemmalfunction.

If the warning lightstays on when driving

(together with a message onthe display on some versions),there could be a failure in therestraint systems. If this is thecase, the airbags orpretensioners may not triggerin the event of an accident or,in a lesser number of cases, they may be activatedincorrectly. REFUELLING

Never introduce even aminimal quantity ofpetrol to the tank, even

in an emergency; the catalyticconverter would be damaged, irreparably compromising itsoperation.

An inefficient catalyticconverter leads toharmful exhaust

    emissions, thus contributing toenvironmental pollution.

The vehicle must berefuelled exclusivelywith diesel for motor

vehicles in compliance withEuropean specification EN590.The use of other products ormixtures may damage theengine beyond repair andconsequently invalidate thewarranty, due to the damagecaused. If you accidentallyrefuel with another type of fuel,do not start the engine, anddrain the tank. If the engine hasrun, even for a very short time, with other fuels, the whole fuelcircuit must be drained inaddition to the tank.

    92

  • If the outside temperature is verylow, diesel thickens due to theformation of paraffin clots withconsequent defective operation ofthe fuel supply system.

In order to avoid these problems, different types of diesel aredistributed according to the season:summer type, winter type and arctictype (cold/mountain areas). Ifrefuelling with diesel fuel whosespecifications are not suitable for thecurrent temperature, it is advisableto mix TUTELA DIESEL ARTadditive in the proportions shownon the container with the fuel. Pourthe additive into the tank before thediesel fuel.

When using or parking the vehiclefor a long time in the mountains orcold areas, it is advisable to refuelusing locally available diesel fuel.

In this case, it is also advisable tokeep the tank over 50% full.

    REFUELLING CAPACITY

To fill the tank completely, top uptwice after the first click of the fueldelivery gun. Further top-ups couldcause faults in the fuel supply system.

    FUEL TANK CAP

The sealing may cause a slightpressure increase in the tank.

A suction noise when you releasethe cap is therefore entirely normal. The cap features a strap A-fig. 104which secures it to the flap so that itcannot be mislaid.

  • PROTECTING THEENVIRONMENTEnvironmental protection hasgoverned every stage in the designand production of the Fiat Strada.

This has resulted in the use ofmaterials and the calibration ofdevices which reduce or drasticallylimit negative environmental impact. The following devices are used forreducing diesel engine emissions:

    oxidising catalytic converter;

    exhaust gas recirculation system(E.G.R.).

    particulate filter (DPF).

Since this filter physically trapsparticulate, it should be regenerated(cleaned) at regular intervals byburning carbon particles. Theregeneration procedure is managedautomatically by the enginemanagement control unit accordingto the filter conditions and vehicleuse conditions.

During regeneration, the followingmay occur: a limited increase in theengine speed, activation of the fan, alimited increase in fumes and hightemperatures at the exhaust. Theseare not faults; they do not impairvehicle performance or damage theenvironment. If the dedicatedmessage is displayed, refer to Warning lights and messages in thissection.

    DIESEL PARTICULATEFILTER (DPF)

The Diesel Particulate Filter is amechanical filter, integral with theexhaust system, that physically trapsparticulates present in the exhaustgases of diesel engines.

The diesel particulate filter has beenadopted to eliminate almost allparticulates in compliance withcurrent/future legal regulations.During normal use of the vehicle, the engine management control unitrecords a set of data (travel time, type of route, temperatures, etc.)and it will then calculate how muchparticulate has been trapped by thefilter.

    CORRECT USE OF THE VEHICLE

STARTING THE ENGINE The vehicle is fitted with anelectronic engine lock device: if theengine fails to start, see the The Fiat CODE system paragraphin the Know your vehicle section.

It is advisable not todemand maximumperformance from your

vehicle (e.g. excessiveacceleration, long distances athigh speeds, excessively intensebraking, etc.) during the initialperiod of use.

When the engine is off,do not leave the keyturned to MAR to

prevent unnecessary electricalconsumption from draining thebattery.

It is dangerous to runthe engine in enclosed

areas. The engine consumesoxygen and engine exhaustcontains carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and othertoxic gasses.

    WARNING

The brake servo andpower steering are not

operational until the enginehas been started, so you needto apply much more force thanusual to the brake pedal andsteering wheel.

    2) Put the gear lever in neutral.

    3) Turn the ignition key to MAR.The m and U warning lightsswitch on in the instrument panel

    4) Wait for the warning lights toswitch off. The hotter the engineis, the quicker this will happen.

    5) Fully depress the clutch pedal.

    6) Turn the ignition key to AVV,within the first few momentsafter the warning lights switch off.Waiting too long will waste theheating work carried out by theplugs. Release the key as soon asthe engine starts.

IMPORTANT With the engine cold, the accelerator pedal must becompletely released while you turnthe ignition key to AVV.

If the engine does not start at thefirst attempt, return the ignition keyto STOP before repeating thestarting procedure.

If you still cannot start the engine, contact a Fiat Dealership.

HOW TO WARM THEENGINE WHICH HAS JUSTSTARTED

Drive off slowly, letting the engineturn at medium revs. Do notaccelerate abruptly.

Do not demand maximumperformance for the first fewkilometres. Wait until the enginecoolant temperature gauge startsmoving.

    EMERGENCY STARTING

Never bump start theengine by pushing, towing or driving

downhill. This could cause fuelto flow into the catalyticconverter and damage it beyondrepair.

Remember that thebrake servo and power

steering are not operationaluntil the engine has beenstarted, so you need to applymuch more force than usual tothe brake pedal and steeringwheel.

    WARNING

    TO STOP THE ENGINE

Turn the ignition key to STOP whilethe engine is idling.

A quick burst on theaccelerator beforeturning off the engine

serves absolutely no practicalpurpose; it wastes fuel and isespecially damaging toturbocharged engines.

IMPORTANT After a taxing drive, you should allow the engine tocatch its breath before turning itoff by letting it idle to allow thetemperature in the enginecompartment to fall.

SNOW TYRESFiat Dealerships will be happy toprovide advice concerning the mostsuitable type of tyres for theCustomers requirements.

For the type of snow tyre to beused, inflation pressures and thespecifications of the tyres, carefullyfollow the instructions given in theWheels paragraph in theTechnical Specifications section.

The winter features of these tyresare reduced considerably when thetread depth is less than 4 mm. Theyshould be replaced in this case.

Due to snow tyre characteristics, under normal conditions of use oron long motorway journeys, theperformance of these tyres is lowerthan that of standard tyres. Theirusage should therefore be restrictedin accordance with their typeapproval.

IMPORTANT When using snowtyres with a maximum speed ratinglower than that of the vehicle(increased by 5%), place a clearlyvisible warning sign in the passengercompartment warning other driversof the maximum speed rating of thesnow tyres used (as required by ECdirective). All four tyres should bethe same (brand and track) toensure greater safety when driving, during braking and betterdriveability.

Remember that it is inadvisable tochange the rotation direction oftyres.

USING THE GEARBOXTo engage gears, fully depress theclutch pedal and put the gear leverinto one of the positions in thediagram fig. 106 (the diagram is alsoshown on the knob).

IMPORTANT Reverse may beengaged only when the vehicle isstationary. With the engine running, wait for at least 2 seconds with theclutch pedal fully pressed beforeengaging reverse, to prevent damageto the gears and grating.

You must not exceed160 km/h on snow tyres

with a Q mark; in any case, make sure you comply with theregulations of the highwaycode.

exerted, even if slight, couldlead over time to prematurewear of the internal gearboxcomponents. The clutch pedal must be usedonly for gear changes. Do notdrive with your foot resting onthe clutch pedal, howeverlightly.
