A NOTI: l=ROM OUR DIRl:CTOR
Today is a day of mixed emotion. For many of us, we remember that almost two years ago, we witnessed the Pulse nightclub shooting. This event shook our community across the country. In Seattle, I remember going to a bar and for the first time in my life, having to go through a pat down and a metal detector to grab a drink. In Tucson, the Spectrum concert went on as scheduled. Instead of one Tucson police officer at the concert, the city provided five officers free of charge to monitor the event. A gift of kindness that a hurting community needed.
That idea of community is what brings us hope today. In a world where a new dilemma seems to happen daily, I find strength and comfort in knowing that I'm not alone. Desert Voices' mission is "Fostering Community Through Song". Today, we showcase the community we are creating. Not only are we singing with Reveille Men's Chorus, but with Phoenix Women's Chorus, Voices of the Desert (Phoenix) and the Palm Spring Gay Men's Chorus. Normally, GALA choruses don't get the chance to perform with each other outside of our GALA festival that occurs every four years. In fact, most GALA choruses don't even get to sing with choruses from other cities. Happily, Desert Voices has created an event where we get to have nearly 200 singers all collaborate for a once in a lifetime performance.
Like many of you, I feel overwhelmed daily with events of the world. Will love and justice win out and correct many of the wrongs in the world? Will there be a future for our children to learn and grow? Will there be a groundswell of love that makes the future better for everyone? I don't know. But I do know that the only way we can make change happen is by growing our community. Fostering the values we have and creating a strong group of advocates that can nurture one another as we continue this fight for love and justice.
Thanks for coming today and making our community stronger. I know you are going to enjoy the show and I am so thankful that we are all able to share this amazing music with you today.
- Brayton
.. CMER Artistic Director/Conductor
After spending the last six years in the Pacific Northwest as the Artistic Director of Diverse Harmony, the nation's first queer straight alliance youth chorus, and Diverse Harmony's small a cappella ensemble Spectrum, Brayton was selected as the Artistic Director for Desert Voices Chorus and Reveille Men's Chorus. Prior to his time in Seattle, Brayton received a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from The Ohio State University in 2006 and a Bachelor of Arts in Sexualities Studies in 2007, completing a thesis on How Gay Male Bias Influences the Gender Performance of Drag Queens in and out of Drag. After spending six amazing years in Columbus, OH, Brayton completed his Masters in Social Work at the University of Washington. While directing Diverse Harmony, Brayton completed his LICSW credentials in 2014. Brayton is so excited to be changing lives and fostering community through song and music in Tucson and cannot wait to continue to amazing progress that these organizations have made throughout their existences.
