What is one-tenth?: Use the ice cream cone game enclosed (for kids 8 and up) or to simplify just use actual objects/money and help them figure out what 1/10th is. If your kids are old enough teach them how to move the decimal place over to help them figure out what they owe. Emphasize: That since everything we have comes from our Heavenly Father in the first place, then paying our tithing is really just giving a small part back to him. Tithing belongs to our Heavenly Father in the first place and we should not keep it from him. Practice Paying Tithing (Activity): Show a tithing slip and envelope (copy included). Explain where the slips and envelopes can be found in your meetinghouse. Practice: Pass out a tithing slip and envelope (or copy) to each child and have them practice filling in the slip, putting it in the envelope and handing it to the “bishop” (dad). What happens with our tithing after we pay it? Read “Emma’s New Roller Blades” with accompanying visual aids. Show them the “tithing wheel” to further reinforce what our tithing is used for. Sing, “I Want to Give the Lord My Tenth,” Children’s Songbook, page 150b Have the children repeat the first verse of the song. Point out that when we pay our tithing, we show Heavenly Father that we love him. Emphasize how happy Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ are when we pay our tithing, especially when we pay it willingly. Read Malachi 3:10, which is about the blessings from paying tithing. Discuss that it truly is a wonderful blessing to be able to pay our tithing and what it means to have the “windows of heaven open to us”. Bear Testimony of the blessings that come from paying tithing. Be sure to relate any personal blessings/experiences you have received from paying your tithing.

Closing song: “I’m Glad to Pay a Tithing,” Children’s Songbook, page 150a “Keep the Commandments,” Hymns, page 303

Closing Prayer:

Refreshments: See below for a yummy recipe Enrichment: Based on the ages and attention spans of your children, choose one or more of the following enrichment activities to enhance the message of the lesson. Enrichment activities do not necessarily need to be completed on the same night as the lesson. We often use them as reinforcement/reminders during the week.

Enrichment ideas: Tithing Jar: Help the children prepare a special place where they can keep their tithing money separate from the rest of their money. It could be a box, small jar, or can. Tell them that each time they earn money, they should first take the amount needed to pay tithing and place it in their special container first thing.

Tithing Around the World: I’ve posted this as a separate document on my blog (see bottom of page for link). It’s a fun way to see how people around the world pay their tithing. Scripture Memorization: Together as a family, work on memorizing Malachi 3:10 and talk more about the blessings of paying your tithing. Tithing Maze (included):

What is one-tenth? Affix sticky back Velcro to the back of the ice cream and where indicated above the cone. NOTE: this game includes being able to count money and some rounding, so be prepared to simplify it significantly for kids under about age 8. (Excuse the poor coloring quality. This is the way I received them and I did not have white copies to reproduce them. )

Print off enough so that each person can have their own slip and envelope. If desired, glue the envelope front onto a real envelope, to give them the feel of putting their money and slip into an envelope.

Emma’s New Roller Blades

(display picture #1) “Mom, mom, guess what!” Emma said excitedly as she burst through the front door. “Mrs. Stephens paid me 5 dollars for raking her leaves. That’s the exact amount I need to buy my new roller blades.” (display picture #2) “Don’t forget your tithing honey,” Mom said. The smile faded from Emma’s face as she left the room. “Tithing,” she thought to herself, “my 50 cents won’t make a difference.” Later that evening Emma walked into the kitchen where her Mom was doing the dishes. “Mom?” Emma asked, “what would happen if you didn’t pay your tithing?” “What do you mean?” her mother asked. “I will have enough money to buy my roller blades unless I pay tithing. It is only 50 cents. How can it make a difference?” Well, sweetheart. “You know that we pay 10% of what we make to the Lord,” her mother began. “Do you know why we do that?” (display picture #3) “Because Heavenly Father and Jesus have asked us to?” Emma replied. “That’s one reason. We also pay our tithing so that we can be worthy to go to the temple. (display picture #4) Besides those two reasons, the money we pay in tithing is used for many things. Can you think of anything that tithing is used for?” Emma thought really hard. She knew she heard something about it in Primary. Suddenly, she remembered. “Sister Baird told us in Primary that tithing money us used to help build new church buildings.” (display picture #5) “You’re right!” her mother smiled. “Also, you know that your aunt, Kristina, is on her mission right now. Well, mommy and daddy help her by adding money to the savings she had for her mission. But some missionaries, who are not as well off as we are, need help from the church. So some of our tithing is used to help them teach the gospel.” (display picture #6) Emma looked up at her mother and smiled. “Now I understand, mommy. Besides I can always rake more leaves to get the rest of the money for my roller blades.” Her mother gave her a hug and Emma went upstairs to her room. There she carefully filled out her tithing slip and placed the 50 cents in the envelope. She felt so much better knowing that she was doing the right thing.” (display picture #7) That Sunday, she could hardly wait to run up to the Bishop and give him her tithing envelope. The Bishop smiled, shook her hand and thanked her for the Lord for paying her tithing. It made Emma feel so good inside, and now she truly knew why it was so important to pay her tithing, no matter how little it seemed.

Tithing wheel—Cut out the following THREE wheels. Glue the white and purple ones together back-to-back, taking care to match up the picture to the correct words on the back. Cut out the window of the yellow wheel. Laminate if desired. Using a metal brad, poke a hole through the center of the yellow wheel and then through the center of the white wheel with the pictures facing the top. (see photo) Start with the picture that says tithing in the open window and spin the wheel as you discuss how our tithing is used.

When you glue this wheel back-to-back with the purple wheel, make sure you line up the words to match with the picture. For example, directly behind the picture of the temple, should be #7 (the words about the temple)
