The companies composing this organization were recruIted as follows: Companie':l A, May 1-19, 1847; F, April 29, 1847; H, May 15, 1847; and I, April 30, 1847. at Cincinnati, Ohio; B, May 8, 1847, and E, May 10 1847, at Columbus, Ohio j C, May 4, 1847, at Lower Sandusky. Ohio; D, April 26, to May 29, 1847, at Ganges, Ohio; G, May 6, 1847, at Millersburg, Ohio; and K, May 4, 1847, at Dayton, Ohio.
During the month of June, 1847, the companies arrived at Cincinnati, Ohio, and were mustered into the service of the United States, and the regimental organization formed by the election of Charles H. Brough as Colonel.
The regiment left Clllcinnati July 1,1847, for New Orleans, via steamer, and crossed the Gulf of Mexico on steamer "Telegraph," landing near the mouth of the Rio Grande river. marched to Matamoras and garrisoned that town until September 4, 1847, when it proceeded to Vera Cruz, arriving there eleven days later.
When Gen. Lane marched to attack the city of Huamantla, October 9, 1847, the regiment was ordered to remain and guard the packed wagon train.
On October 12, 1847. the regiment entered Pueblo by the main road, to the rescue of Col. Childs, who held that city for 28 days; the siege was passed and the enemy left for Atlexco. The regiment marched from Perote, October 19, 1847, and participated in the battle of Atlexco, of that date.
The force under Gen. Lane halted at Santa Isabella, a short distance from the town. When the enemy was sighted the 4th was ordered to occupy a large deep ravine to the left of the road and flank the same. This movement confused the enemy; when the cavalry charged and followed them np for about one and one-half miles, skirmishing with them. After a running fight of about four miles the troops arrived before the city. The town was shelled after night with much destruction, a beautiful moonlight allowing the gunners to direct the shots to the mOl't thickly populated parts of the town. This regiment cautiously entered the town one hour later, when the enemy retreated before it and the city was captured-the loss to the Mexicans being 219 killed and 300 wounded, while the American loss was oue killed and one wounded. Atlexco was the headquarters for the guerrillas in this section of the country and the seat of government for the state. News having been received that two

pieces of artillery had been finished by the enemy at Guexocingo, a portion of the regiment proceeded there, searched the town; the guns had been removed but the carriages were found and destroyed. The regiment then returned to Pueblo, where regimental headquarters were established and garrison duty performed for about eight months.
The regimental loss during its brief term of service was 76 men·-four killed in battle, one died of wounds received ill battle, and seventy-one of disease. The regiment was mustered out of service- from July 15 to 24, 1848, at Ciuciullati, Ohio.
The battle in which this regiment bore an honorable part was:

The companies compnslllg this organization were enrolled as follows: Company A July 31,1847, and I, August 7, 1847, at Cincinnati, Ohio; B, July 15 to September 16, 1847, at Newark, Ohio; C, August 10, 1847, at Batavia, Ohio; D, July 10.1847 to August 31,1847. at Columbus, Ohio; E, August 27, 1847, at Somerset, Ohio j F, July 31, 1847, at Lancaster, Ohio; G, August 3, 1847 at Mt. Vernon, Ohio; H, July 24, 1847, at Circleville, Ohio, and K July 16 to August 28, 1847, at Chillicothe, Ohio.
After the return of the Second Regiment from Mexico, the War Department authorized Lt. Colonel Irwin to effect a new organization. It was, however, S0011 ascertainerl that only a small portion of the companies would again go into service. In a few weeks the ten companies were recruited, accepted and ordered to report at Camp Wool, Cincinnati, Ohio, at which place William Irwin was elected Colonel. The regiment was mustered into service about September 1, 1847, and 011 September 10 embarked on three steamboats for New Orleans.
(It was intended that this regiment should be known as the "Fifth Ohio Volunteer Infantry," but the records of the War Department show that the regiment was mustered in and mustered out as the Second 2d O. V. I.)
Two weeks later the regiment arrived at New Orleans, and there embarked on three sailing vessels bound for Vera Cruz, Mexico, at which place it arrived about October 4, 1847, and went into camp about two miles west of the city, where the regiment was disciplined and drilled for active service. October 20,1847, General Caleb Cushing ordered the regiment to march to the interior with three other regiments, a company of cavalry and six pieces of artillery, to guard 1,000 wagons and 2,000 pack mules, loaded with ammunition, provisions and clothing bound for the city of Mexico. Upon reaching the city of Mexico it was found to be occupied by the American army and negotiations for peace were in progress. This regiment continued its march until Pueblo was reached November 1, 1847, having brought the immense train safely through to this point. Here the regiment was divided, companies A, B, C and D were detailed for duty in Pueblo, and the other six companie«> with a new company L, that had been attached to it were ordered to Rio Frio, midway through the mountains and about 25 miles east of the city of Mexko.

480 ROSTER OF OHIO TROOPS
At this place several soldiers were killed in skirmishes with guerrillas who infested the mountainous districts-the regiment being kept in active serdce ill this way until the war closed.
Peace was declared in June, 1848, and the army began its return to the United States. The 5th O. Y. 1. reached New Orleans on July 4, 1848, from thence to Cinciuuati, where the several compallies were mustered out of the service of the United States from the 24th to the 26th of July, 1848.
The regimental loss during its brief service was very large. Seventyfour men lost their lh'es in skirmishes with the guerrilla bands and from diseases iccident to the Mex.ican climate.
